Book excerpt: La littérature algérienne de langue française de l'entre-deux-guerres est méconnue aussi bien du grand public que des spécialistes des littératures francophones du Maghreb. La présente thèse propose une présentation des premiers romans écrits par des algériens musulmans dans la langue du colonisateur. Le corpus est constitué par 6 romans publiés entre 1920 et 1945. Après une esquisse rapide des conditions socio-historiques et culturelles de l'émergence de cette production littéraire, nous avons tenté de comprendre ses mécanismes de fonctionnement. Ces romans souscrivent dès les premières lignes à un discours idéologique déterminé, celui de l'assimilation, mais sans exception, la fiction romanesque contredit ce qui est avancé au niveau idéologique. Pour comprendre les raisons de cette ambiguïté profonde qui sous-tend l'ensemble des oeuvres en question, nous avons étudié le discours de l'assimilation tel qu'il est développé dans l'Algérie de l'entre-deux-guerres, puis nous avons vu comment la mise en récit de ce discours idéologique était vouée à l'échec dans tous les cas. L'étude du corpus selon les critères établis par la critique littéraire moderne justifiait notre pressentiment du début selon laquelle il ne s'agit pas de romans à thèse. Au fur et à mesure que la narration se développe, une quête identitaire de plus en plus affirmée vient supplanter en importance le discours idéologique et ouvre cette écriture romanesque vers un dialogisme dont nous présentons les caractéristiques essentielles dans les dernières pages de la thèse.

Book excerpt: Writing French Algeria is a groundbreaking study of the European literary discourse on French Algeria between the conquest of 1830 and the outbreak of the Algerian War in 1954. For the first time in English, this intertextual reading reveals the debate conducted within Algeria - and between colony and metropole - that aimed to forge an independent cultural identity for the European settlers. Through astute discussions of various texts, Peter Dunwoodie maps the representation of Algeria both in the dominant nineteenth-century discourse of Orientalism, via the littérature d'escale of writers such as Gautier or Fromentein, and in the colonial writing of Louis Bertrand, Robert Randau, and the `Algerianists' who played a critical role in the construction of the new `Algerian'. Dunwoodie shows how this ultimate construction relied on an extremely selective process which marginalized the indigenous people of the Maghreb in order to rediscover the country's `Latin' roots. The book also focuses on the dialogism operative in the works of École d'Alger writers like Gabriel Audisio, Albert Camus, and Emmanuel Roblès, interrogating the way in which their voices countered the closure of those earlier strategies and yet still articulated the unresolvable dilemma of an inherently unstable and impermanent minority whose identity remained grounded in otherness.
