Download or read book La protection de l environnement en temps de conflit arm written by Karine Mollard-Bannelier and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: An environmental journalist reveals how some California military bases are leading the charge in the fight against climate change. In California, the US military has begun to redefine how our national security operations relate to the destabilizing effects of climate change. Several bases have taken on a largely unrecognized yet crucial role in renewable-energy innovation and in preserving cultural and natural treasures. These facilities are going beyond environmental stewardship to align national defense with energy security and the protection of endangered species. In Unlikely Ally, environmental journalist Marilyn Berlin Snell takes readers through these bases to examine what twenty-first-century sustainable-energy infrastructure looks like; whether combat readiness and species protection can successfully coexist; how cutting-edge technology and water-conservation practices could transform life in a resource-constrained world; and how the Department of Defense's scientific research into the metabolic secrets of the endangered desert tortoise could speed human travel to Mars.

Download or read book La protection de l environnement en p riode de conflit arm written by Cyprien Dagnicourt and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Les missions militaires au service de la biodiversit written by Sarah Brunel and published by EDP Sciences. This book was released on 2023-10-23T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Recent experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans have highlighted the importance of environmental considerations. These range from protecting soldier health and disposing of hazardous waste to building water supply systems and other activities that help achieve national goals in the post-conflict phase of contingency operations. The Army has become increasingly involved with environmental issues in every contingency operation and must be better prepared to deal with them. This study assesses whether existing policy, doctrine, and guidance adequately address environmental activities in post-conflict military operations and reconstruction. Findings are based on reviews of top-level policy and doctrine, analysis of operational experience, extensive interviews with diverse Army personnel, and a review of operational documentation and literature. From these sources, a database of 111 case studies was created. The research showed that environmental concerns can have far-reaching and significant impacts on the Army, both direct and indirect, especially in terms of cost, current operations, soldier health, diplomatic relations, reconstruction activities, and the ultimate success of the operation or the broader mission. Some evidence suggests that environmental problems may have even contributed to insurgency in Iraq. Recommendations include updating current policy and doctrine to fully address environmental considerations in contingency operations; ensuring that contractors are carefully selected and managed; and transmitting proactive field environmental practices and lessons throughout the Army.

Book Two Shades of Green Environmental Protection and Combat Training

Download or read book Two Shades of Green Environmental Protection and Combat Training written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a RAND/Arroyo Center briefing on the implications of environmental restrictions for military combat training. It draws heavily on a case study of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where the conflict between effective training and sound resource conservation practices has reached near-crisis levels. The Bragg case is unique because of both the difficulty and transparency of the issues. It serves as a valuable "bell ringer" case study to help the Army meet similar challenges at other installations that must conduct significant military missions while conserving sensitive ecosystems. The recent transformation of Fort Bragg, guided by sustained high-level command involvement, confirms the ability of bases to meet these challenges when adequate will and resources are applied. The strategic and detailed lessons learned through wide-ranging retrospective analysis can assist the Army in determining the root causes of its difficulties and in developing a strategy to meet both its training and environmental responsibilities in a balanced and proactive way.

Download or read book Protection de l environnement en p riode de conflit arm written by Sylla Youssouf and published by Omniscriptum. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Greening of the U S Military

Download or read book The Greening of the U S Military written by Robert F. Durant and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the Cold War's end, U.S. military bases harbored nearly 20,000 toxic waste sites. All told, cleaning the approximately 27 million acres is projected to cost hundreds of billions of dollars. And yet while progress has been made, efforts to integrate environmental and national security concerns into the military's operations have proven a daunting and intrigue-filled task that has fallen short of professed goals in the post-Cold War era. In The Greening of the U.S. Military, Robert F. Durant delves into this too-little understood world of defense environmental policy to uncover the epic and on.

Download or read book Mobilizing nature written by Chris Pearson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobilizing nature traces the environmental history of war and militarisation in France, from the creation of Châlons Camp in 1857 to military environmentalist policies in the twentieth century. It offers a fresh perspective on the well-known histories of the Franco-Prussian War, Western Front (1914-18), Second World War, Cold War and the anti-base campaign at Larzac, whilst uncovering the largely 'hidden' history of the numerous military bases and other installations that pepper the French countryside. Mobilising nature argues that the history of war and militarisation can only be fully understood if human and environmental histories are considered in tandem. Preparing for and conducting wars were only made possible through the active manipulation and mobilisation of topographies, climatic conditions, vegetation and animals. But the military has not monopolised the mobilisation of nature. Protesters against militarisation have consistently drawn on images of peaceful and productive civilian environments as the preferable alternative to destructive tanks and bombs. Written in an accessible style, Mobilizing nature will appeal to readers interested in modern France, environmental history, military geographies and histories, anti-military protests, and environmentalism.

This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 1370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Qatar, the Asian-African Legal Consultative Committee (AALCC), in cooperation with the Secretariat of the United Nations and Frère Cholmeley (Paris) organised the Conference on International Legal Issues Arising under the United Nations Decade of International Law in Doha, Qatar on 22--25 March 1994. Around 60 speakers and 200 participants from more than 40 nations freely expressed their views on the progressive development of international law and its codification with a view to States' actions in the future adhering to the principles of international law as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. The subjects dealt with by the Conference had one thing in common: they were all topical issues or, in French, `des questions d'actualité', and will remain thus throughout the United Nations Decade of International Law. The various themes were Environmental Law, the Law of the Sea, the Settlement of Disputes, Humanitarian Law, and the Rio Conference, Post-Rio and the New International Economic Order. This book which contains the Conference proceedings will be of great interest to lawyers specializing in international law. The book is not only a photograph of some very important issues as they existed and were perceived in 1994, it will also serve as a reference book and a unique tool which will be indispensable to understanding some of the most crucial legal problems with which the world community is faced today.
