The people (mushrooms) woke up one day to the horror of having some members of the community getting attacked and mauled by a leopard. Activities in the town came to a standstill; the town was known for its farming and fishing activities. Children would gather around a large bonfire to listen to stories told by older folks. Some would go to the town square and engage in all manner of sporting activities such as Chaskele (hitting an empty can with a stick in a bid to make it enter an old bucket or basket, or a person would hit the can and make it travel a long distance, then an opponent is made to chase after it). Others would tie a cloth around their waist and run around as the wind blows through to make it feel as though they are riding a parachute. The young women would gather in groups to chat about the days happenings while the young men would talk about some latest beauty they have laid eyes on. Others would teach a new trick they have learnt, play draft, or wrestle each other. A month after Maam Amas encounter with the supposed leopard, school children returning from school one afternoon were attacked, and one of them was carried away to an unknown destination by the leopard. The whole community was abashed and didnt know whether to believe it or not. Because the witnesses were children, they gave all forms of reportsthe description of the savage would either point to a hyena, a lion, or a leopard. Other children also disclosed they only saw their friend disappear into the forest, oblivious of whom or what took him. The only thing that made the story believable was the fact that a child was missing. The young men of the town formed into groups to search through the forest. They carried machetes and locally manufactured guns; they searched through the whole area but couldnt locate the boy. No sign indicated he had been carried away. They returned very disappointed.

But now the islands have been rebuilt, renovated and improved. They are once more open for business, and enjoying a newfound prosperity as visitor numbers increase year on year. This guide takes hikers on treks through the rainforest, and divers to The Bianca C, the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean. It shows cultural visitors the nation's diverse heritage and rich musical traditions and leads those in need of a little lie-down to unspoilt beaches and secluded coves.

HOME & DRY IN NORMANDY is the first of two books following the adventures of George and Donella East as they try to realise their dream of living the good life in rural France. After months of property-hunting, the couple arrive at The Mill of the Flea, a dilapidated and long-abandoned eighteenth-century water mill set in ten acres of fields, woods, streams and mud in the heart of the magical Cotentin peninsula of Normandy. There, the Easts set about renovating the farmhouse and tiny mill cottage on a shoestring budget. As they struggle to adapt to a very different life and culture, the Easts find themselves with an unofficial estate manager as René Ribet moves on to their land in his ancient caravan. René will, he says, help them learn the ways of the countryside while returning the mill to its former glory. To the innocents abroad he appears a godsend. To the locals in the nearby village of Néhou, however, René Ribet is known as The Fox of Cotentin, notorious for his wily money-making schemes. Financial success eludes the couple but they gradually find their place amongst the characterful locals and develop an unlikely and enduring friendship with René. As the seasons pass, the couple finally realise that the real treasure has been around them all the time...

Book A New Way to Cook

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sally Schneider
  • Publisher : Artisan Books
  • Release : 2003-10-15
  • ISBN : 9781579652494
  • Pages : 762 pages

Download or read book A New Way to Cook written by Sally Schneider and published by Artisan Books. This book was released on 2003-10-15 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally Schneider was tired of doing what we all do—separating foods into "good" and "bad," into those we crave but can't have and those we can eat freely but don't especially want—so she created A New Way To Cook. Her book is nothing short of revolutionary, a redefinition of healthy eating, where no food is taboo, where the pleasure principle is essential to well-being, where the concept of self-denial just doesn't exist. More than 600 lavishly illustrated recipes result in marvelous, vividly flavored foods. You'll find quintessential American favorites that taste every bit as good as the traditional "full-tilt" versions: macaroni and cheese, rosemary buttermilk biscuits, chocolate malted pudding. You'll find Italian polentas, risottos, focaccias, and pastas, all reinvented without the loss of a single drop of deliciousness. Asian flavors shine through in cold sesame noodles; mussels with lemongrass, ginger, and chiles; and curry-crusted shrimp. Even French food is no longer on the forbidden list, with country-style pâtés and cassoulet. Hundreds of techniques, radical in their ultimate simplicty, make all the difference in the world: using chestnut puree in place of cream, butter, and pork fat in a duck liver mousse; extending the richness of flavored oils by boiling them with a little broth to dress starchy beans and grains; casserole-roasting baby back ribs to render them of fat, then lacquering them with a pungent maple glaze. Scores of flavor catalysts—quickly made sauces, rubs, marinades, essences, and vinaigrettes—add instant hits of flavor with little effort. Leek broth dresses pasta; chive oil becomes an instant sauce for broiled salmon; a smoky tea essence imparts a sweet, grilled flavor to steak; balsamic vinegar turns into a luscious dessert sauce. Variations and improvisations offer infiinite flexibility. Once you learn a basic recipe, it's simple to devise your own version for any part of the meal. "Fried" artichockes with crispy garlic and sage can be an hors d-oeuvre topped with shaved cheeses, part of a composed salad, or as a main course when tossed iwth pasta. It's equally happy on top of pizza or stirred into risotto. And by building dishes from simple elements, turning out complex meals doesn't have to be a complex affair. A wealth of tips and practical information to make you a more accomplished and self-confident cook: how to rescue ordinary olive oil to give it more flavor, how to make soups creamy without cream, how to freshen less-than-perfect fish. So here it is, 756 glorious pages of all the deliciousness and joy that food is meant to convey.

Book The New Art of Cookery According to the Present Practice

Download or read book The New Art of Cookery According to the Present Practice written by Richard Briggs and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1792 in Philadelphia, The New Art of Cookery was the first cookbook published specifically for an American market that included New World ingredients, and it was unique until publication of Amelia Simmons’s groundbreaking American-authored cookbook, American Cookery. While author Richard Briggs was a British culinary writer, he adapted this extensive collection of recipes for American cuisine and ingredients, as evidenced in the numerous recipes for turkey and stuffing a turkey. Highlighting the wide array of delectable meals available in the colonies in the late 18th century, The New Art of Cookery included recipes such as green pea soup, stewing oysters, broiling leg of turkey, baking herring, frying artichokes, lobster pie, and potato puddings, as well as Directions for Seafaring Men, Directions for the Sick, and How to Keep Garden Vegetables. With its wealth of information and wide array of recipes, The New Art of Cookery was understandably essential to the 18th century cook, and it is of great historical significance today. This edition of The New Art of Cookery, According to the Present Practice was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.

Book excerpt: Departing from the usual emphasis on an urban and industrial context for the rise of socialism, Socialism in Provence 1871-1914 offers instead a reinterpretation of the early years of Marxist socialism in France among the peasantry. By focusing on a limited period and a particular region, Judt provides an account both of the character of political behavior in the countryside and of the history of left-wing politics in France.
