Los estudiosos discuten sobre los enigmas de sintaxis o sentido y, en no pocos casos, sobre la historicidad de lo narrado, puesto que contrasta con datos que conocemos por otras fuentes o está en abierta contradicción con lo que afirman los evangelios sinópticos. ¿Intervinieron los romanos en el prendimiento de Jesús? ¿Qué papel tuvo Anás en el proceso? ¿Existía una amnistía romana para un preso con ocasión de la Pascua? ¿Sentó Pilato a jesús en su propio tribunal? El mayor enigma, por lo que respecta a la cronología de la Pasión, es el del día de su muerte: ¿Fue el 14 o el 15 de Nisán? Éstas y otras extrañezas han llevado a muchos estudiosos a dudar de la verdad histórica de ciertos datos que aparecen en el relato de Juan sobre la pasión. Se achaca al evangelista privilegiar su visión teológica por encima de la historia misma de los acontecimientos. El estudio de estas escenas, a partir de las dificultades lingüísticas, muestra todo lo contrario: Juan es fiel a la historia y tiene de ella un conocimiento más preciso de lo que se supone a menudo. Resueltas las dificultades, el texto es de una extraordinaria claridad y permite, como si fuéramos llevados de la mano por un testigo ocular de los hechos, adentrarnos en la historia de la Pasión con la emoción de quien participa del testimonio fidedigno de alguien que siguió muy de carca a Jesús desde el Cenáculo a Getsemaní, y desde allí al palacio de Pilato y al de los sumos sacerdotes; de alguien que fue testigo del juicio ante el Procurador y vio cómo Jesús fue atravesado por una lanza después de morir.
