Les questions, sur les premières migrations mondiales, l'origine du genre Homo ou encore la position de certaine espèce dans la généalogie humaine, restent ouvertes. La paléo-odontologie est essentielle à la reconstitution des relations de parenté entre les êtres vivants. Les qualités de conservation dans le temps des dents, la préservation de l'ADN fossile comme ses variations anatomiques, offrent pour les paléoanthropologues un grand avantage par rapport à l'os. Ce travail montre toute la complexité de la reconstitution de notre histoire commune. Les analyses ou découvertes du XXIème siècle, poussent les scientifiques à rester circonspects quant à la rédaction de la préhistoire.

Book excerpt: Cette monographie de la denture permanente (26 dents) d'un crâne Sao (Cameroun) du XIVe siècle est l'occasion de rappeler les bases fondamentales de l'anatomie dentaire dans ses implications paléontologiques et anthropologiques. L'avènement de l'odonto-anthropologie comparée donna lieu au siècle dernier, lors de multiples découvertes, témoins des évolutions adaptatives qui ont accompagné la longue aventure de l'hominisation, à une bibliographie considérable, dont les premiers écrits remontent à la fin du XIXe siècle. De la supercherie de Piltdown qui dura quarante ans jusqu'à la bataille scientifique pour rechercher en 2006 l'ancêtre commun, la dent reste, même décrite à l'aide d'une terminologie reconnue fausse (la primauté du protocône), le témoin indubitable de la répartition géographique, aussi aléatoire que surprenante, des ancêtres de l'Homme. L'étude morphologique et métrique de la denture du crâne Sao, traditionnelle, a été enrichie par les méthodes d'imagerie actuelle (radiographie rétro-alvéolaire et scanographie) et par une numérisation des macro-photographies. Celles-ci ont permis de relever avec précision des mesures coronaires et radiculaires en utilisant des moyens simples et précis. Les mesures comparatives, dont la méthodologie demande à être affinée, ont été rassemblées pour créer une véritable carte d'identité dentaire dont l'utilité, tant d'un point de vue médico-légal qu'anthropologique, est certaine. Les méthodes en usage en dentisterie ont contribué à limiter la manipulation du crâne Sao, fragile et unique par sa conservation exceptionnelle. Le moulage en 3 temps et sans pression de chacune des différentes faces des arcades, en particulier occlusales, à l'aide d'un élastomère silicone (3 viscosités différentes), a permis l'obtention de répliques en plâtre de grande qualité. Celles-ci, sectionnées et manipulées par un spécialiste en odontologie, praticien d'exercice, journellement confronté à la cinématique et à la dynamique mandibulaires, ont facilité une étude fonctionnelle, complément utile mais non exclusif de l'étude morphométrique. L'usure dentaire, phénomène ancien et général observé au cours de l'évolution, aujourd'hui moins intense et moins fréquemment rencontrée, accompagne habituellement la fonction manducatrice des anthropomorphes et de l'homme (GASPARD). L'observation à la loupe des dents du Sao et de leurs répliques, la comparaison des macrophotographies et la superposition de transparents a permis de minimiser la subjectivité du compte-rendu. Le choix opportun des échelles de HALL (usure occlusale) et de VAN REENEN et REINACH (usure intersticielle) a permis d'évaluer une usure moyenne de type hélicoïdale (ACKERMANN). Cependant, la dissociation relative entre les éléments de la forme et ceux de la fonction (SAKKA) rend l'étude des volumes dentaires, principalement coronaires et soumis dans le temps à une abrasion, indépendante de l'étude du régime alimentaire et des habitudes socio-culturelles. La denture presque complète du Sao a suggéré de comparer les 2 côtés des arcades, maxillaire et mandibulaire, dans un contexte fonctionnel particulier. Il apparaît que l'usure occlusale est plus marquée du côté gauche, au niveau des molaires et du côté droit au niveau des prémolaires. Dans le secteur incisif, l'avulsion rituelle et sans doute précoce des incisives mandibulaires, remplacées par un labret, n'a pas créé de déséquilibre occlusal, malgré la transformation d'un guidage dento-dentaire originellement antéro-latéral, en guidage latéral. La mastication bilatérale alternée dès le plus jeune âge a favorisé la croissance mandibulaire et maxillaire pour une mise en place harmonieuse des 2 arcades dentaires. Dans le secteur antérieur, le labret pourrait avoir joué le rôle d'un mainteneur d'espace. Dans les secteurs postérieurs, tout s'est passé comme si l'engrènement intra-arcades avaient remplacé progressivement l'engrènement inter-arcades. Enfin, l'âge du Sao au moment du décès (30 à 40 ans) a été approché par l'évaluation de l'usure des molaires mandibulaires. Cette denture de la Préhistoire africaine est un parfait exemple d'une mastication équilibrée, au sein d'une architecture crânio-faciale qui reste à étudier. Elle est exeempte de pathologie et évoque une bonne santé bucco-dentaire. Par une plus sûre conservation de ses structures dans des conditions délètères, la dent apporte de nombreux renseignements à l'anthropologie biologique. Dans le cas de restes éparpillés sur le terrain et appartenant à plusieurs individus, l'étude de l'occlusion complète l'étude morphologique et morphométrique. Elle doit aider à rassembler les pièces.
