Book Research in University Pedagogy

Download or read book Research in University Pedagogy written by Stephanie Bridoux and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an overview of the research carried out in didactics on the teaching and learning of science at university from the perspective of university pedagogy. The first part sheds light on the links between university pedagogy and didactics, by studying the nature and place of disciplinary pedagogical knowledge at university and the training of academics through the prism of professionalization. The second part questions the teaching practices of academics from a disciplinary approach, from the point of view of the impact of the research discipline on the declared practices, or that of the links between the resources mobilized in research and teaching activities. The third part proposes a sociological look at these practices, in terms of the analysis of the discourses of institutional actors or of practices in situ. The book concludes with a synthesis that develops the main issues, challenges and difficulties that remain at the end of this book.

Book International Handbook of Leadership for Learning

Download or read book International Handbook of Leadership for Learning written by Tony Townsend and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-10 with total page 1311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Handbook of Leadership for Learning brings together chapters by distinguished authors from thirty-one countries in nine different regions of the world. The handbook contains nine sections that provide regional overviews; a consideration of theoretical and contextual aspects; system and policy approaches that promote leadership for learning with a focus on educating school leaders for learning and the role of the leader in supporting learning. It also considers the challenge of educating current leaders for this new perspective, and how leaders themselves can develop leadership for learning in others and in their organisations, especially in diverse contexts and situations. The final chapter considers what we now know about leadership for learning and looks at ways this might be further improved in the future. The book provides the reader with an understanding of the rich contextual nature of learning in schools and the role of school leaders and leadership development in promoting this. It concludes that the preposition ‘for’ between the two readily known and understood terms of ‘leadership’ and ‘learning’ changes everything as it foregrounds learning and complexifies, rather than simplifies, what that word may mean. Whereas common terms such as ‘instructional leadership’ reduce learning to ‘outcomes’, leadership for learning embraces a much wider, developmental view of learning.

Book Academic Identities in Higher Education

Download or read book Academic Identities in Higher Education written by Linda Evans and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic identity is continually being formed and reformed by the institutional, socio-cultural and political contexts within which academic practitioners operate. In Europe the impact of the 2008 economic crisis and its continuing aftermath accounts for many of these changes, but the diverse cultures and histories of different regions are also significant factors, influencing how institutions adapt and resist, and how identities are shaped. Academic Identities in Higher Education highlights the multiple influences acting upon academic practitioners and documents some of the ways in which they are positioning themselves in relation to these often competing pressures. At a time when higher education is undergoing huge structural and systemic change there is increasing uncertainty regarding the nature of academic identity. Traditional notions compete with new and emergent ones, which are still in the process of formation and articulation. Academic Identities in Higher Education explores this process of formation and articulation and addresses the question: what does it mean to be an academic in 21st century Europe?

Book Perspectives on Learning Assessment in the Arts in Higher Education

Download or read book Perspectives on Learning Assessment in the Arts in Higher Education written by Diane Leduc and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on theoretical and empirical insights from art teachers in Canada and Europe, this edited volume explores the question of how learning in the arts can be effectively and fairly assessed in the context of higher education. The chapters consider a rich variety of assessment practices across music, visual and plastic arts, performing arts, design, fashion, dance and music and illustrate how knowledge, competencies, skills and progress can be viably and fairly assessed. Contextual challenges to assessment are also considered in depth, and particular attention is paid to the challenges of reconciling teaching in the arts, aimed at an intuitive transformation of the student, and assessing learning that takes on its meaning in subjectivity and sensitivity. This text will benefit researchers, academics and educators in higher education with an interest in assessment in the artistic disciplines and in the topic of creativity more broadly. Those specifically interested in educational assessment policy and the visual arts will also benefit from this book.

Book Public Vices Private Virtues Assessing the Effects of Marketization in Higher Education

Download or read book Public Vices Private Virtues Assessing the Effects of Marketization in Higher Education written by Pedro N. Teixeira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen the strengthening of a discourse that emphasises the virtues of markets, competition and private initiative, vis-à-vis the vices of public intervention in higher education. This volume presents a timely reflection about the effects this increasing marketization has been producing in many higher education systems worldwide. The various chapters of this volume analyse the impact of markets at the system level, with significant attention being devoted to the changes in modes of regulation, the strengthening of aspects such as privatization and inter-institutional competition in higher education systems, and the closer interaction between higher education and its economic environment. Several of the contributors devote attention as well to the implications of market forces for institutional change, notably regarding issues such as mission, organizational structure and governance and the way marketization is affecting the internal distribution of power and the definition of priorities. Finally, the volume includes several chapters focusing on the different markets of higher education, such as the academic labour market, undergraduate and postgraduate education, and research markets. Altogether these chapters provide important insights concerning the many national and institutional contexts in which the marketization of higher education has been taking place around the world.

Book Cahier Du LLL N 1bis 2020

Download or read book Cahier Du LLL N 1bis 2020 written by and published by Presses universitaires de Louvain. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, the flipped classroom was described as "lectures at home and homework in class": technology was used to transfer the mainly theory-based part of a course out of the classroom to free up more time during the lesson to focus on applications, problems, case studies or projects. However, the concept was very quickly broadened by extending the range of non-classroom activities. Should we just expect students to passively watch videos suggested by the teacher? Or should be we asking them, individually or in groups, to prepare part of the course for the other students before class? Of course, we want a method that is coherent, particularly in terms of time and space; it requires an important adjustment of the knowledge and skills targeted, the resources allocated to out-of-class activities and the learning activities and interactions inside and outside the classroom. But how do you create the teaching aids and design the pre-class preparatory activities? How can you make the space/time encounter between students and with the teacher more active and meaningful? How can you use the flipped classroom concept to really add value in terms of quality of learning and sustainable skills? Lastly, how do you assess how the students are using these skills? This short guide aims to answer some of the questions you may have about the flipped classroom and help you embrace the truly ground-breaking opportunities of this teaching method of the future.

Book Building Teaching Capacities in Higher Education

Download or read book Building Teaching Capacities in Higher Education written by Alenoush Saroyan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of three years’ work by teams from eight institutions in five different European and North American countries. The teams included faculty developers, professors, and graduate students interested in developing and disseminating a more profound understanding of university-level pedagogy. The purpose of the project was, first, to conceptualize what an internationally-appropriate, formal academic program for faculty development in higher education might look like, taking into account differing national contexts, from national standards for faculty development (U.K. and Scandinavia), almost universal institutional support (North America) to virtually no activities (France). The intention was to create and nurture a community of practice, enriched and informed by a range of expertise and different higher education traditions, cultures, and languages. To do so, the book begins with a section of five case studies that describe current practice in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France and Switzerland. The second purpose was to define a common curriculum, or core course with common foundations, for faculty and graduate students, based on a distributed learning model. The final section of the book presents a concrete concept map used to define the curriculum, and to educational developers with useful tool for furthering their work, and explains the rationale for redefining faculty development as educational development. This book offers practitioners around the world a framework and model of educational development that can serve a number of purposes including professional development, monitoring and assessment of effectiveness, and research, as they seek to meet increasing demands for public accountability. For North American readers it offers insight into the vision and aims of the Bologna Process with which they may need to engage to maintain international competitiveness.
