Book The Missing Dimensions of Poverty Data

Download or read book The Missing Dimensions of Poverty Data written by Sabina Alkire and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to draw attention to 'missing dimensions' of poverty data - dimensions that are of value to poor people, but for which we have scant or no data. Amartya Sen frames development as the process of expanding the freedoms that people value and have reason to value. Although the most widely-known measure of human development includes income, longevity, and education, many have argued that people's values, and consequently multidimensional poverty, extends beyond these domains. In order to advance these multiple areas, it is at times necessary to conduct empirical studies using individual or household-level data on multiple dimensions of poverty. A critical barrier for international analyses of multidimensional poverty is that few or no high-quality indicators are available across countries and respondents in key domains that are deeply important to poor people and of potentially critical instrumental importance.

Book The Lead Books of Granada

Download or read book The Lead Books of Granada written by E. Drayson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as early Christian texts as important as the Dead Sea Scrolls, yet condemned by the Vatican as Islamic heresies, the Lead books of Granada, written on discs of lead and unearthed on a Granadan hillside, weave a mysterious tale of duplicity and daring set in the religious crucible of sixteenth-century Spain. This book evaluates the cultural status and importance of these polyvalent, ambiguous artefacts which embody many of the dualities and paradoxes inherent in the racial and religious dilemmas of Early Modern Spain. Using the words of key individuals, and set against the background of conflict between Spanish Christians and Moriscos in the late fifteen-hundreds, The Lead Books of Granada tells a story of resilient resistance and creative ingenuity in the face of impossibly powerful negative forces, a resistance embodied by a small group of courageous, idealistic men who lived a double life in Granada just before the expulsion of the Moriscos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry in Spanish, English and Spanglish. Latino/a Studies. First published in 1984 by Arte Publico, "Shaking off the Dark" has become one of the classics of Chicano literature. This new, corrected edition features poems not included in the first edition, as well as introduction and bibliography. These poems are thoughtful, angry, perceptive, and address such topics as art, time, love, oppression, history, and language itself. "Distraught, /mad-eyed from told formulas/bound to rule my easy ways, /I look, I see, /but fail once more to know." In this "failure" to know, however, Villanueva provides us a gorgeous window onto the worlds he sees so sharply. "So arise, Chicano, " he extorts, "arise from the shadow of Nothingness; /arise from that neverending Nada of servitude./The problem is we live by other people's words" (from "Speak Up, Chicano, Speak Up"). Villanueva does speak up, creating poems to counter "other people's words." A recipient of the American Book Award, Villanueva lives in Boston and teaches at Boston University.
