Book Good News from Latin America

Download or read book Good News from Latin America written by Nelson R. Morales Fredes and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stott was a renowned expositor and servant of the global church. His life’s ministry to develop and resource Christian leaders around the world has left an important legacy, especially for the church in Latin America. Many of these Christian leaders would receive direct support from Stott’s ministry, now known as Langham Partnership, to obtain their PhDs, joining numerous others around the world as a community of Langham scholars. On the 100th anniversary of John Stott’s birth, Langham scholars honor this legacy and Stott’s holistic understanding of the gospel, as they bear witness to the good news of the kingdom of God and its justice in Latin America. Structured around the historical development and impact of the Reformation throughout the continent, this collection of essays reflects on how the gospel has been understood, and addresses fundamental questions that stem from the rich biblical, historical, and theological traditions of the diverse faith communities in Latin America. Providing a proactive model for the global church that encourages dialogue, these contextualized expositions reflect their authors’ deep commitment to the Latin American church and the implications of the gospel.

Download or read book Feminismo written by Marifran Carlson and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the Argentine Woman's movement and describes the individuals in its vanguard: women as different in personality and political orientation as the socialist activist Dr. Alicia Moreau de Justo, the international literary figure Victoria Ocampo and the legendary Eva PerÓn.The story begins with a background sketch of Argentine history, spanning four centuries from the conquistadores to the PerÓns. It describes the participation of upper class women in the country's philanthropic establishment thought the Beneficent Society, founded in the early nineteenth century; the development of the public education system- considered the best in Latin America- through the strong contribution of North American female teachers; and the influence of nineteenth century free thought and socialism upon woman's movement. Despite the broadening of education and the positive effect of European immigration upon Argentine institutions, it was not until the middle of the twentieth century that woman suffrage was finally achieved—by a bizarre twist of fate through the efforts of the PerÓn regime, and to the outrage and consternation of most Argentine feminists.

Download or read book The Anarchist Inquisition written by Mark Bray and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anarchist Inquisition explores the groundbreaking transnational human rights campaigns that emerged in response to a brutal wave of repression unleashed by the Spanish state to quash anarchist activities at the turn of the twentieth century. Mark Bray guides readers through this tumultuous era—from backroom meetings in Paris and torture chambers in Barcelona, to international antiterrorist conferences in Rome and human rights demonstrations in Buenos Aires. Anarchist bombings in theaters and cafes in the 1890s provoked mass arrests, the passage of harsh anti-anarchist laws, and executions in France and Spain. Yet, far from a marginal phenomenon, this first international terrorist threat had profound ramifications for the broader development of human rights, as well as modern global policing, and international legislation on extradition and migration. A transnational network of journalists, lawyers, union activists, anarchists, and other dissidents related peninsular torture to Spain's brutal suppression of colonial revolts in Cuba and the Philippines to craft a nascent human rights movement against the "revival of the Inquisition." Ultimately their efforts compelled the monarchy to accede in the face of unprecedented global criticism. Bray draws a vivid picture of the assassins, activists, torturers, and martyrs whose struggles set the stage for a previously unexamined era of human rights mobilization. Rather than assuming that human rights struggles and "terrorism" are inherently contradictory forces, The Anarchist Inquisition analyzes how these two modern political phenomena worked in tandem to constitute dynamic campaigns against Spanish atrocities.

Book Ethics without Principles

Download or read book Ethics without Principles written by Roy H. May Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics in the West too often equates morality with universal moral principles, thus imposing lifestyles and moral criteria that do not respect differences and local histories. Even Christianity proposes ethics that is based on eternal, absolute and universal truths or principles, independent of sociocultural and historical contexts. The problem is that these universal moral laws become a means of social control to exclude those who are different: non-Christian religions, nonwhite races, non-Western cultures, and poor and marginalized social classes everywhere. To these can be added minorities marginalized because of sexual orientation, physical handicaps, and women of all sectors and cultures. Another kind of ethics is urgent. For these reasons, Christians in Latin America and other parts are seeking innovative ways of envisioning ethics from their marginalized and discriminated social locations in order to find another possible ethics, an ethics that is not universal and not based on eternal truths or principles, but rather is contextual and historical and that takes into account real-life realities. Only an ethics that does this will be liberative. Important steps toward this other possible ethics have been taken by the theology of liberation by developing a contextual and intercultural morality.

Book The Poetics and Politics of Diaspora

Download or read book The Poetics and Politics of Diaspora written by Jerome C. Branche and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the creative discourse of the modern African diaspora by analyzing poems, novels, essays, hip-hop and dub poetry in the Caribbean, England, Spain, and Colombia, and capturing diasporan movement through mutually intersecting axes of dislocation and relocation, and efforts at political group affirmation and settlement, or “location.” Branche’s study connects London’s multimillion-dollar riots of 2011, and its antecedents associated with the West Indian settler community, to the discontent and harrowing conditions facing black immigrants to contemporary Spain as gateway to Fortress Europe. It links the brutal massacres that target Colombia’s dispossessed and displaced poor - and mainly black - “throwaway” citizens, victims of the drug trade and neoliberal expansionism, to older Caribbean stories that tell of the original spurts of capitalist greed, and the colonial cauldron it created, at the center of which lay the slave trade. In revisiting the question of what really has awaited Afro-descendants at the end of the Middle Passage, this volume brings transatlantic slavery, the making of weak postcolonial states that bleed people, and the needle’s eye of racial identification together through a close reading of rappers, black radicals, dub poetry, and novelists from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Branche at once demonstrates the existence of an archive of Afro-modern diasporan, discursive production, and just as importantly, points toward a historically-rooted theoretical framework that would contain its liberatory trajectory.

Con ejemplos claros de métodos específicos, Piper muestra a los predicadores cómo y qué comunicar desde el púlpito de una manera que toma en serio la tarea de manejar la Palabra de Dios semana tras semana en el contexto de, y como, la adoración cristiana. Christian preaching is a God-appointed means of transforming its hearers in both head and heart. With clear examples of specific methods, Piper shows preachers how and what to communicate from the pulpit in a way that takes seriously the task of handling the word of God week in and week out in the context of, and as, Christian worship.
