Trois axes de recherche se déclinent autour de cette question. Dans le premier, il est question de la place de la migration dans 1es parcours d'insertion professionnelle des jeunes. Après un travail s'intéressant plus particulièrement aux jeunes d'origine rurale, la réflexion s'étend à l' ensemble, des jeunes français; La migration, élément du capital humain, se combine avec la formation, l'expérience professionnelle et il s'agit d'étudier les modes de combinaison et leurs conséquences dans les parcours d'insertion. On aborde ensuite la place de de la migration dans les stratégies de recherche d'emploi. On montre que si la situation professionnelle influence la migration, l'impact de la mobilité sur la situation professionnelle est moins bien établi. En revanche, des mécanismes d'autosélection se dessinent. La compréhension des différences de fonctionnement entre marchés urbains et marchés ruraux du travail constitue un préalable important pour comprendre les choix de départ et de destination. Cette question est abordée dans le deuxième axe de recherche. Deux pistes sont alors explorées. La demande de travail des firmes se distingue-t-elle sur un gradient urbain-rural? La rencontre entre l'offre et la demande de travail s'effectue-t-elle dans des conditions différentes sur ce même gradient? Nous répondons oui aux deux questions. Les firmes rurales utilisent plus de main d' oeuvre peu qualifiée: la division spatiale du travail perdure. La moindre qualité des matches et les relations paternalistes se combinent et conduisent à des salaires et un turnover plus faibles dans le rural. Dans un troisième axe, on s'intéresse à l'articulation entre dimensions professionnelle et résidentielle des décisions de mobilité et de localisation et à son évolution au cours du cycle de vie de l'individu. On montre que la première domine au début de la vie active et oriente les jeunes vers les centres urbains. Elle laisse le pas progressivement aux motivations résidentielles lorsque la famille évolue expliquant tout d'abord la périurbanisation puis les migrations vers le rural quand la retraite approche. Le projet présenté ensuite, s'inscrivant dans la continuité des travaux précédents, insistera sur la différenciation spatiale de la relation entre mobilité géographique et mobilité professionnelle. Dans le prolongement des travaux sur la mobilité au cours du cycle de vie, les choix de localisation seront étudiés en cherchant à mieux prendre en compte l'arbitrage entre accessibilité aux emplois et consommation d'aménités dans le cadre de l'économie urbaine. Le coeur du projet a pour objectif d'étendre le travail sur la relation entre mobilité géographique et mobilité professionnelle à l'ensemble de la population active, en tenant compte des différenciations spatiales des marchés du travail. Partant de l'hypothèse que la division spatiale du travail se décline avec le niveau d'urbanisation, on cherchera à montrer comment une division verticale devrait favoriser la construction des carrières alors qu'une division horizontale devrait être moins propice à cette construction et conduire plus souvent à la mobilité géographique. Enfin, un troisième projet vient compléter ce chantier et s'intéresse au rôle de la formation continue sur le turnover et à sa différenciation spatiale sur un gradient urbain-rural.

Therefore, those engaged in research and policy making in the social field must acquire a better under standing of this form of migration if they are to deal effectively with a number of the problems confronting them. This is particularly true since the schemes for European integration which are going ahead so rapidly are sure to produce new patterns of migration. At a meeting of the F.A.O. Working Group on Rural Sociology held in Oslo in 1960, it was suggested that an inventory should be made of all available data and studies on the subject of migration in Europe. This suggestion was taken up by the European Society for Rural Sociology and the Netherlands Ministry of Social Work which, after deliberating together, decided to ask the Dutch expert, Dr. G. Beijer, to draw up such an inventory under their joint auspices. As secretary of the Research Group for European Migration Problems (R.E.M.P.), Dr. Beijer has been engaged for many years in an intensive study of the phenomenon of migration.
