Sa situation exceptionnelle à la charnière de trois continents, et en isthme entre la Méditerranée, la mer Rouge et le golfe Persique et, d’autre part, l’existence d’immenses ressources pétrolières, ont donné au Moyen-Orient arabe une très grande importance géopolitique. La région connaît aujourd’hui des transformations considérables. Toutefois, le Moyen-Orient est fortement marqué par l’aridité, en Arabie et plus encore en Égypte, dont la plus grande partie est hyperaride, tandis que, dans le Nord, le Croissant fertile bénéficie d’un climat méditerranéen à forte sécheresse estivale. Malgré la présence de grands fleuves exogènes, et d’importants aquifères fossiles, les ressources en eau sont réduites et très mal réparties. Les hommes ont donc dû, très tôt, élaborer des techniques ingénieuses de maîtrise de l’eau, mais l’augmentation rapide des besoins a nécessité la multiplication de barrages et pompages. L’augmentation rapide des besoins a amené les hommes à multiplier barrages et pompages et a beaucoup exiger des rivières et des aquifères si bien que épuisement et pénurie menacent aujourd’hui gravement la plupart des pays. L’histoire géologique, retracée, permet de mieux comprendre à la fois l’évolution et les potentialités de la région. De même, l’histoire des paléoenvironnements, en particulier depuis le dernier maximum glaciaire, est présentée et mise en relation avec l’évolution des sociétés humaines, notamment lors de la révolution néolithique. La longue occupation humaine, comme les techniques actuelles d’exploitation intensive, marquent profondément les paysages.

What was the impact of interactions between cultures in the Iranian Plateau and the surrounding regions (Mesopotamia, the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Indus Valley)? What was the overall context during the Bronze Age on the Iranian Plateau? What was the extent and means of the expansion of the Kuro-Araxe culture? How did the Elamite Kingdom become established? What new knowledge has been contributed by the recent excavations and studies undertaken in the east of Iran? What was the influence of the Indus Valley culture, known as an epicentre of urbanisation in South Asia? What are the unique characteristics of the ancient cultures in Iran? While the urbanisation of early Mesopotamia has been the subject of much debate for several decades, this topic has only recently been raised in respect to the Iranian Plateau. This volume is the product of an international community from Iranian, European, and American institutions, consisting of recognised specialists in the archaeology of the Iranian Bronze Age. It provides an overview of the latest research, including abundant results from current on-going excavations. The current state of archaeological research in Iran, comprising many dynamic questions and perspectives, is presented here in the form of original contributions on the first emergence of towns in the Near and Middle East.

Book excerpt: The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology has had a long-standing interest in the archaeology of Iran. In 1956, Robert H. Dyson, Jr., began excavations south of Lake Urmia at the large mounded site of Hasanlu. Although the results of these excavations await final publication, the Hasanlu Special Studies series—of which this monograph is the fourth volume—describes and analyzes specific aspects of technology, style, and iconography. This volume describes a group of ongoing research projects, most of which provide new information on Iron Age technology. A theme that runs through these studies is the degree to which ancient workers varied the composition of their products to create desirable colors and textures. The book begins with a description of the wooden furniture fragments along with fittings and decorative elements for furniture. It presents the first detailed description of the charred textiles, and places these textiles in their archaeological contexts, suggesting the roles that textiles may have played in daily life. Later chapters assess the significance of Hasanlu in the history of glassmaking, describe the archaeometallurgy of the Hasanlu IVB bronzes, and present a catalog of the bladed weapons. Also, the book presents the evidence for deliberate violence against individuals as indicated by their skeletal injuries and the results of a project undertaken to determine whether DNA could be used to obtain a better understanding of the population history at Hasanlu.
