Book Historical Dictionary of Mauritania

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Mauritania written by Anthony G. Pazzanita and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-10-23 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mauritania is bordered by Senegal in the south, Mali in the east, Algeria in the far northeast, and the disputed territory of Western Sahara to the north. Comprised mostly of vast stretches of desert, this young country has escaped the ravages of the violent interstate and civil conflicts that have so bedeviled Africa. Mauritanian society possesses ancient antecedents and a universal religious faith that has been practiced over several centuries. These characteristics have given the country a sometimes fragile but relatively resilient sense of national identity, which has survived into the 21st century in the face of powerful political, regional, ethnic/racial, and tribal rivalries since its independence in 1960. An economy largely centered on the export of raw materials, a weak agricultural sector, and a harsh climate in most areas further add to the challenges confronting all Mauritanians. The third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Mauritania_through its chronology, introductory essay, maps, bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, events, institutions, and significant political, economic, social, and cultural aspects_provides an important reference on Mauritania.

Book Nomads of Mauritania

Download or read book Nomads of Mauritania written by Diane Himpan Sabatier and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Nomads of Mauritania' aims at understanding the cultural identity (religious beliefs, language, values, relationships with others) of the Mauritanian nomads through their geographical environment, an original history, their lifestyle, caste system, diet, housing and crafts and how it is revealed by their art, materially expressed on the everyday objects and the body and defined for the first time as geometrical-abstract and respectively as ephemeral usual art and ephemeral living art. Furthermore, what has become of the nomads of Mauritania with the climate warming and the economic and cultural globalization and to what extent are they still the pillars and heart of the Mauritanian society of today?

Book Mauritania s Colonels

Download or read book Mauritania s Colonels written by Boubacar N’Diaye and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the result of more than a decade of research, focuses on the socio-political dynamics and civil-military relations in a little studied country: Mauritania, located in the troubled North-western part of Africa. Boubacar N’Diaye brings into light the political evolution of this country which holds lessons for African politics, and could affect the future of the West African sub-region. Mauritania’s Colonels examines the personalities and policy of five military officers turned heads of state who ruled Mauritania for nearly forty years. After comparing and contrasting the personal traits, social origins, itineraries, and evolution as military officers, it critically evaluates the policies they enacted to address four key challenges their country faces. These are, namely, the difficult cohabitation between the country’s ethno-cultural communities, the illusive democratization and military withdrawal from politics, the judicious management of the country’s abundant natural resources to meet the socioeconomic needs of their people, and the prudent conduct of foreign policy given Mauritania’s location, straddling Arab North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. Showing the impact that each Colonel has had on the evolution of Mauritania, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of West Africa, African politics, civil-military relations and democratization processes.

Book Rapport Du Groupe de Travail de la FAO Sur L valuation Des Petits P lagiques Au Large de L Afrique Nord occidentale

Download or read book Rapport Du Groupe de Travail de la FAO Sur L valuation Des Petits P lagiques Au Large de L Afrique Nord occidentale written by FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa. Meeting and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa was held in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, from 26 April to 5 May 2005. The meeting continued to focus on data quality and on the analysis of trends in the basic data (landings, catch, effort, abundance, length and age distribution) and trends in the fishery independent survey data. The structure of the report is the same as that of the previous Working Group report (FAO, 2004), with the addition of two chapters, one on bonga (Ethmalosa fimbriata) and one on anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus). A separate section is devoted to each of the main groups of species (sardine, sardinella, horse mackerel, chub mackerel, bonga and anchovy). For each of these, standardised information is given on stock identity, fisheries, abundance indices, sampling, biological data, assessment, management recommendations and future research. In the absence of reliable length and/or age compositions, the Working Group used production models for all stocks. The results of the assessments indicate that the sardine stock in Zone C is not fully exploited and the Working Group hence noted that the total catch level may be temporarily increased but should be adjusted to natural changes in the stock. A constant monitoring of the stock abundance and structure, by scientific surveys, independent from catch data, should be ensured, to detect unanticipated changes that may require urgent management measures. As regards the central stock of sardine (Zones A+ B), it is recommended not to increase catches above the average level of the last five years (600 000 tonnes). The stock of round sardinella was found to be fully exploited and it was hence recommended not to increase catches of sardinella above the current level of 400 000 tonnes (2004). As a precautionary approach, the Working Group recommended not to increase catches above the average level of the last five years for the horse mackerels (80 000 tonnes for Trachurus trachurus and 170 000 tonnes for T. trecae) and not to increase catches above the 2004 level for chub mackerel (220 000 tonnes). For bonga the Working Group recommended as a precautionary measure that the catch level should not exceed the average over the last five years (42 000 tonnes) and for anchovy the catch level should not exceed the average over the last three years (160 000 tonnes). In formulating the results of the assessments, the Working Group noted that it lacked a set of uniform reference points and management objectives for all stocks in the area. The Group noted that the selection of appropriate reference points required more time than was available during the meeting. It was therefore decided that some members will look further into this problem, working by correspondence, and present a working paper at the 2006 meeting. At that meeting the Working Group will attempt to agree on a common policy concerning the way it presents its management advice for the various stocks.

Book Measuring African Development

Download or read book Measuring African Development written by Morten Jerven and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chief economist for the World Bank's Africa region, Shanta Devarajan, delivered a devastating assessment of the capacity of African states to measure development in his 2013 article "Africa's Statistical Tragedy". Is there a "statistical tragedy" unfolding in Africa now? If so then examining the roots of the problem of provision of statistics in poor economies is certainly of great importance. This book on measuring African development in the past and in the present draws on the historical experience of colonial French West Africa, Ghana, Sudan, Mauritania and Tanzania and the more contemporary experiences of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The authors each reflect on the changing ways statistics represent African economies and how they are used to govern them. This bookw as published as a special issue of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies.

Book Des milliards en jeu

Download or read book Des milliards en jeu written by NJ Ayuk and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Future of Africa Energy and Doing Deals.
