Book Sesenta semanas en el tr pico

Download or read book Sesenta semanas en el tr pico written by Antonio Escohotado and published by La Emboscadura. This book was released on with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: "Gypsies are justly famed for their psychic powers and the ability to curse or bring good luck to those that cross their path." A sparkling compilation of secrets passed down from one generation to the next, Gypsy Magic offers readers simple techniques for harnessing "zee energy" to bring about good luck, health, wealth, happiness, and love. Author Patrinella Cooper draws upon her Romany heritage and tells readers "how the Gypsy tradition helped me to develop my own power, which in turn enables me to help other people, through magic and fortune-telling." Perfect for anyone interested in the interplay between nature and divination, this introduction to the gypsy traditions shows how to unlock the power of palmistry, tarot, dreams, tea leaves, and, of course, crystal balls. In addition to sharing time-tested natural remedies and healing herbs, Cooper shares her traveler's insight into reading nature's signs and omens, from stars and seasons to birds and plants. Gypsy Magic also reveals how to attract good luck with charms, protect against curses, harness the power of the planets, and weave simple spells.

Download or read book Minorities Migrants and Crime written by Ineke Haen Marshall and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997-07-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What relationship exists between minority status and crime? Is this relationship generalizable across different societies? Many western nations are becoming concerned with the problem of crime in general and, in particular, the role of minority groups, be they political refugees, guest workers, immigrants, or native ethnic and racial minorities. A unique cross-cultural exploration. Minorities, Migrants, and Crime highlights the empirical realities of crime and these under-studied populations. Each international expert from the United States or Europe surveys national statistical facts and research as well as political and theoretical debates critical to the issues. Revealing a number of surprising similarities and differences, original chapters examine law enforcement priorities, punishment philosophy and practices, and media coverage against the backdrop of contemporary thought and facts about race, ethnicity, migrants, crime, and criminal justice in the United States. Offering an in-depth examination of international perspectives, Minorities, Migrants, and Crime adds a viewpoint crucial to the law and policy making currently taking place in the United States. Minorities, Migrants, and Crime features state-of-the-art research in the international arena of criminal justice. A thought-provoking read, this book will prove to be an ideal resource for researchers, academics, and students in criminology, criminal justice, corrections, policing, sociology, ethnic studies, policy studies, international studies, immigration studies, and public administration.

Book Spirit Song

  • Author : Marc Gidal
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016-01-06
  • ISBN : 0190493801
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Spirit Song written by Marc Gidal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spirit Song: Afro-Brazilian Religious Music and Boundaries, Marc Gidal investigates how and why a multi-faith community in southern Brazil utilizes music to combine and segregate three Afro-Brazilian religions: Umbanda, Quimbanda, and Batuque. Combining ethnomusicology and symbolic boundary studies, Gidal advances a theory of musical boundary-work: the ways music reinforces, bridges, or blurs boundaries, whether for personal, social, spiritual, or political purposes. Gidal focuses on spirit-mediumship rituals and their musical accompaniment, exploring how the Afro-gaucho religious community employs music and rituals to variously promote innovation and egalitarianism in Umbanda and Quimbanda, while it reinforces musical preservation and hierarchies in Batuque. Religious and musical leaders carefully restrict the cosmologies, ceremonial sequences, and sung prayers of one religion from affecting the others so as to safeguard Batuque's African heritage. Members of disenfranchised populations view the religions as vehicles for empowerment, whether based on race-ethnicity, gender, or religious belief; and innovations in ritual music reflect this activism. These rituals come to life through illustrative video and audio examples on the book's companion website. The first book in English to focus on music in Afro-Brazilian religions, Spirit Song is a landmark study that will be of interest to ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, and religious studies scholars.
