Book excerpt: Cette thèse porte sur l'impact des facteurs non cognitifs et plus particulièrement des jugements d'efficacité personnelle, sur la lecture de textes en anglais langue étrangère auprès d'étudiants en sociologie. La première partie de la thèse établit le cadre théorique qui s'articule autour du rôle de l'efficacité personnelle et des facteurs non cognitifs dans les processus de décision et de motivation: ainsi, cette thèse s'inspire des concepts venant non seulement de la psychologie sociale et de la psychologie cognitive, mais également des recherches sur la lecture concernant les modèles interactifs, la metacognition, l'expertise, et la littérature. En conséquence, la construction du sens est présentée comme un phénomène tant cognitif que social. Dans la deuxième partie de la thèse sont présentées trois études utilisant des protocoles verbaux, des entretiens, des questionnaires et des tests de langue et de lecture, ces diverses méthodes permettant d'évaluer les compétences réelles des étudiants et d'estimer ce qu'ils en perçoivent ; les résultats montrent l'incapacité des étudiants de l'échantillon à s'é́valuer de façon fiable et à se fixer des objectifs réalistes. Une approche socio-cognitive établit l'influence d'une telle discordance sur leurs performances et donc sur les apprentissages éventuels. L'enseignement articulé autour de la lecture de textes en anglais langue étrangère peut dès lors être facilité par : une analyse réfléchie des besoins, des évaluations diagnostiques, et une focalisation des objectifs d'apprentissage et de maîtrise, et non de performance.

Book excerpt: The label CLIL stands for classrooms where a foreign language (English) is used as a medium of instruction in content subjects. This book provides a first in-depth analysis of the kind of communicative abilities which are embodied in such CLIL classrooms. It examines teacher and student talk at secondary school level from different discourse-analytic angles, taking into account the interpersonal pragmatics of classroom discourse and how school subjects are talked into being during lessons. The analysis shows how CLIL classroom interaction is strongly shaped by its institutional context, which in turn conditions the ways in which students experience, use and learn the target language. The research presented here suggests that CLIL programmes require more explicit language learning goals in order to fully exploit their potential for furthering the learners’ appropriation of a foreign language as a medium of learning.
