Download or read book The U S Mexican Border Today written by Paul Ganster and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive survey systematically explores the dynamic historic and contemporary interface between Mexico and the United States along the shared 1,954-mile international land boundary. Now fully updated and revised, the book provides an overview of the history of the region and traces the economic cycles and social movements from the 1880s through the second decade of the twenty-first century. The border region shares characteristics of both nations while maintaining an internal social and economic coherence that transcends its divisive international boundary. The authors conclude with an in-depth analysis of key contemporary issues. These include industrial development and manufacturing, bilateral trade, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, rapid urbanization, border culture, population and migration issues, environmental crisis and climate change, Native Americans, cooperation and conflict at the border, drug trafficking and violence, the border wall and security, populist national leaders and the border, and the Covid-19 pandemic at the border. They also place the border in its global context, examining it as a region caught between the developed and developing world and highlighting the continued importance of borders in a rapidly globalizing world. Richly illustrated with photographs, maps, charts, and up-to-date statistical tables, this book is an invaluable resource for all those interested in borderlands and U.S.-Mexican relations.

Download or read book Exports and Local Development written by Patricia A. Wilson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico's export assembly industry has been the object of an intensely polarized debate. While some observers laud the maquiladora industry as a source of much-needed employment and foreign exchange for Mexico, others berate it as a vehicle for exploitation and pollution. Exports and Local Development attempts to transcend the dichotomy by taking a practical look at how this export industry could be better utilized to promote local development. Using data gathered from a field survey of more than seventy maquiladora plants, Patricia A. Wilson compares the Mexican industry with its more successful Asian counterparts to determine how policy initiatives might help Mexico use local linkages to tap the potential of both local and foreign-owned assembly plants. The study grounds its analysis of the maquiladora industry in leading-edge issues including the rise of free trade, changing corporate sourcing strategies, the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing, the Japanese challenge, the spread of flexible technology and management methods, the impacts of export-led development strategies, the importance of business networking, and the role of small business. It will be of interest to a wide audience in international business, economic development planning, public policy, and economic geography.
Download or read book Global Inequalities at Work written by Jody Heymann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A map of the relationship between work and health that is truly global--both geographically and in its coverage of the impact of work on the health of individuals, families, and societies, has not previously been drawn. Global Inequalities at Work is the first book to fill in the map. Drawing from studies done around the world, it critically examines the many ways in which work is affecting health around the world. The first section covers the wide range of risks--physical, chemical, and social--tot he health of employees in agricultural, industrial, and post-industrial workplaces. Part II provides a detailed analysis of how working conditions can dramatically influence the health and welfare of family members--including children, elderly parents, and the disabled--in both the developing and industrial world. Part III examines the relationships between work and health at the societal level by focusing on two examples: the ways in which working conditions affect income inequalities and health, and the ways in which working conditions influence gender inequalities and health. Part IV investigates the new challenges to and opportunities for improving the relationship between work and health that are presented by a rapidly globalizing economy. Global Inequalities at Work addresses these issues at a time when globalization is both markedly changing the impact of work on the health of individuals, families, and societies, and radically revising what can be done about it. Leaders from universities, international organizations, and nongovernmental organizations bring to this edited volume expertise from six continents.

Download or read book Transnational Tortillas written by Carolina Bank Muñoz and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the flip side of globalization: How does a company from the Global South behave differently when it also produces in the Global North? A Mexican tortilla company, "Tortimundo," has two production facilities within a hundred miles of each other, but on different sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. The workers at the two factories produce the same product with the same technology, but have significantly different work realities. This "global factory" gives Carolina Bank Muñoz an ideal opportunity to reveal how management regimes and company policy on each side of the border apply different strategies to exploit their respective workforces' vulnerabilities. The author's in-depth ethnographic fieldwork shows that the U.S. factory is characterized by an "immigration regime" and the Mexican factory by a "gender regime." In the California factory, managers use state policy and laws related to immigration status to pit documented and undocumented workers against each other. Undocumented workers are subject to harsher punishment, night-shift work, and lower pay. In the Baja California factory, managers sexually harass women—who make up most of the workforce—and create divisions between light- and dark-skinned women, forcing them to compete for managerial attention, which they understand equates with job security. In describing and analyzing the differences in working conditions between the two plants, Bank Muñoz provides important new insights into how, in a globalized economy, managerial strategies for labor control are determined by the interaction of state policies and labor market conditions with race, gender, and class at the point of production.
Download or read book Cultural Identity and Social Liberation in Latin American Thought written by Ofelia Schutte and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1993-03-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book defines the relationship between liberation and cultural identity in the Latin American social reality--from a historically rooted, critical philosophy. Schutte explores the connections between the diverse political and intellectual movements for social liberation in Latin America since 1920. She analyzes the variety of attempts to give meaning to the complex and conflictive nature of Latin America's social reality, critiquing the work of Jose Carlos Mariategui, Samuel Ramos and Leopoldo Zea's early work, Gustavo Gutierrez, and Paulo Freire, among others. Schutte's approach is philosophical with a distinctly interdisciplinary context. Her discussion of feminism brings the question of women's equality to the forefront of discussions on Latin American social thought. Concluding with the contemporary ethical and political implications, Schutte argues that liberation-oriented theories are sustained yet heterogeneous attempts to deal with Latin America's difficult economic, social, and political problems.
