Book The Fair Imperia and the Fair Imperia Married Dodo Press

Download or read book The Fair Imperia and the Fair Imperia Married Dodo Press written by Honore De Balzac and published by . This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) was a nineteenth-century French novelist and playwright. His Magnum Opus was a sequence of almost 100 novels and plays collectively entitled La Comedie Humaine, which presents a panorama of French life in the years after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815. Due to his keen observation of detail and unfiltered representation of society, Balzac is regarded as one of the founders of realism in European literature. He is renowned for his multi-faceted characters; even his lesser characters are complex, morally ambiguous and fully human. Inanimate objects are imbued with character as well; the city of Paris, a backdrop for much of his writing, takes on many human qualities. His writing influenced many famous authors, including the novelists Marcel Proust, Emile Zola, Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Marie Corelli, Henry James and Jack Kerouac, as well as important philosophers such as Friedrich Engels. Many of Balzac's works have been made into films, and they continue to inspire other writers. His works also include: Jean-Louis (1822), Clotilde de Lusignan (1822) and Wann-Chlore (1826).

Book Picasso and the War Years 1937 1945

Download or read book Picasso and the War Years 1937 1945 written by Steven A. Nash and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2003-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing book draws upon new research and works that, in some cases were held out of public view in Picasso's own collection, to explore the critically important--but still under-studied--period of his life from the Spanish Civil War through World War II and the Nazi occupation of France. This span of years is marked by some of the most intensely personal and expressive work of his career. The subjects he painted changed dramatically in direct response first to the horrors of war and then the dangers and privations of life in occupied Paris, where, though branded a degenerate artist by the Nazis, he chose to remain until the Liberation.

Book Sextravaganza

    Book Details:
  • Author : Claude Prosper Jolyot De Crebillon Fils
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2002-12-01
  • ISBN : 9781410101099
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Sextravaganza written by Claude Prosper Jolyot De Crebillon Fils and published by . This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sextravaganza shows Claude Prosper Jolyot de Crebillon fils at his ablest. It begins where most novels end - in the bedroom (of a fashionable lady of 18th Century France) at night. And it ends there the following morning. Its dramatis personae are two - as in the Garden of Eden. A man and a woman. The difference is that French women need no snake to tempt them. And Frenchmen no apple. Men and women had traveled far since the days of Adam and Eve. Sextravaganza is as simple, and as risque, as all that. But around this simple setting what a masterpiece of the subtle and the sophisticated does Crebillon paint! It is a most extraordinary picture of the battle between the sexes. On one side the male strategy of attack: the aphrodisiac quality of erotic conversation, the incandescent power of casual caresses, and the psychological moments of action. On the other side the female tactics of defense: the evasive changes of subject, the reprimands of mock indignation, the agitations of approaching defeat. Finally, the tumultuous surrender. Thus, in the course of one night, a man and a woman, each of whom is in love with somebody else, gradually warm up to each other until they forget past pleasures in present passions. Satire, irony, word play and scandal abound.

Book Women Coauthors

  • Author : Holly A. Laird
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9780252025471
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Women Coauthors written by Holly A. Laird and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, collaborative authorship has barely been considered by scholars; when it has, the focus has been on discovering who contributed what and who dominated whom in the relationship and in the writing. In Women Coauthors, Holly Laird reads coauthored texts as the realization of new kinds of relationship. Through close scrutiny of literary collaborations in which women writers have played central roles, Women Coauthors shows how partnerships in writing - between two women or between a woman and a man - provide a paradigm of literary creativity that complicates traditional views of both author and text and makes us revise old habits of thinking about writing. Focusing on the social dynamics of literary production, including the conversations that precede and surround collaborative writing, Women Coauthors treats its coauthored texts as representations as well as acts of collaboration. Holly A. Laird discusses a wide array of partial and full coauthorships to reveal how these texts blur or remap often uncanny boundaries of self, status, race, reason, and culture. that of the Delany sisters and Amy Hill Hearth on Having Our Say; lesbian couples whose lives and writings were intertwined, including Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper (Michael Field) and Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas; and the Native American wife-and-husband authors Louise Erdrich and Michael Dorris. Framed in time by the feminist and abolitionist movements of the mid-nineteenth century and the ongoing social struggles surrounding gender, race, and sexuality in the late twentieth century, the partnerships and texts observed in Women Coauthors explore collaboration as a path toward equity, both socioliterary and erotic. For the authors here who collaborate most fully with each other, two are much better than one.

Book Greek Oared Ships 900 322 BC

Download or read book Greek Oared Ships 900 322 BC written by J. S. Morrison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written in the belief that a proper understanding of Greek civilization in antiquity requires some knowledge of its background of seafaring. A knowledge of nautical practice is required for an understanding of some passages of Greek poetry and prose writing, and for a correct interpretation of numerous historical events. This is an attempt at a thorough study of the evidence, both literary and archaeological. Modern reference books tend to repeat the misconceptions of nineteenth-century scholars. In contrast, Mr Morrison and Mr Williams have written a scholarly and scientific study of the subject. They collect in this volume evidence for Greek oared ships between 900 and 322 BC. The book is primarily a catalogue of decorated pottery and quotations from literature and from naval inventories. The pottery is illustrated by diagrams and plates; and the quotations are given in full.
