Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Problem of the Earth s Shape from Newton to Clairaut

Download or read book The Problem of the Earth s Shape from Newton to Clairaut written by John L. Greenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-07-28 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates, through the problem of the earth's shape, part of the development of post-Newtonian mechanics by the Parisian scientific community during the first half of the eighteenth century. In the Principia Newton first raised the question of the earth's shape. John Greenberg shows how continental scholars outside France influenced efforts in Paris to solve the problem, and he also demonstrates that Parisian scholars, including Bouguer and Fontaine, did work that Alexis-Claude Clairaut used in developing his mature theory of the earth's shape. The evolution of Parisian mechanics proved not to be the replacement of a Cartesian paradigm by a Newtonian one, a replacement that might be expected from Thomas Kuhn's formulations about scientific revolutions, but a complex process instead involving many areas of research and contributions of different kinds from the entire scientific world. Greenberg both explores the myriad of technical problems that underlie the historical development of part of post-Newtonian mechanics, which have only been rarely analyzed by Western scholars, and embeds his technical discussion in a framework that involves social and institutional history politics, and biography. Instead of focusing exclusively on the historiographical problem, Greenberg shows as well that international scientific communication was as much a vital part of the scientific progress of individual nations during the first half of the eighteenth century as it is today.

Book An Introduction to Relativistic Gravitation

Download or read book An Introduction to Relativistic Gravitation written by Remi Hakim and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an introductory textbook on applications of general relativity to astrophysics and cosmology. The aim is to provide graduate students with a toolkit for understanding astronomical phenomena that involve velocities close to that of light or intense gravitational fields. The approach taken is first to give the reader a thorough grounding in special relativity, with space-time the central concept, following which general relativity presents few conceptual difficulties. Examples of relativistic gravitation in action are drawn from the astrophysical domain. The book can be read on two levels: first as an introductory fast-track course, and then as a detailed course reinforced by problems which illuminate technical examples. The book has extensive links to the literature of relativistic astrophysics and cosmology.

Book La loi de la gravitation universelle Newton Euler et Laplace

Download or read book La loi de la gravitation universelle Newton Euler et Laplace written by Prosper Schroeder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Peyresq Lectures On Nonlinear Phenomena Volume 3

Download or read book Peyresq Lectures On Nonlinear Phenomena Volume 3 written by Freddy Bouchet and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume of lecture notes from summer schools held in the small village of Peyresq (France). These lectures cover nonlinear physics in a broad sense. They were given over the period 2004 to 2008. The summer schools were organized by the Institut Non Linéaire de Nice (Nice, France), the Laboratoire de Physique Statistique (ENS Paris, France) and the Institut de Recherche de Physique Hors Equilibre (Marseilles, France). The goal of the book is to provide a high-quality overview on the state of the art in nonlinear sciences, and to promote the transfer of knowledge between the various domains in physics dealing with nonlinear phenomena.

Book La science et le monde moderne d Alfred North Whitehead

Download or read book La science et le monde moderne d Alfred North Whitehead written by François Beets and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second international Chromatiques whiteheadiennes conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form "companion" volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program - that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.

Book excerpt: The presentation of the book leans heavily on mathematics, and good understanding of some parts of the book require skills in ground level university mathematics. You manage rather well also with high school mathematics and positive attitude (or maybe also with pure positive attitude). Both classical gravitation theory and general relativity theory are treated using easier mathematics than in standard presentations. The basic structure of the theories is presented clearly in the book. Some new results with relation to planet orbits are presented in the book.
