Download or read book Syntaxe th orique et formelle Volume 1 Mod lisation unit s structures written by Sylvain Kahane and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Conceived as a general introduction to syntax, this book presents the basic concepts necessary for a study of the combination of lexical and grammatical units within an utterance. The book does not impose a preconceived framework, but rather examines the various possibilities for the representation of syntactic structures, according to the general principles and specific criteria that have been adopted. The aim of this book is to provide a basis for teaching syntax at university, and to show that it is possible to identify the properties of languages in a methodical way and to put order in the jungle of each language. The book is divided into three parts: How to develop the model of a language? How to determine the basic units of a language according to their meaning, form, and combinatorial nature? How to define and represent the different ways in which the units are organized? This last part presents an abundance of syntactic diagrams of a wide range of types. The book is divided into small sections, alternating the main content with insights, historical notes, formal elaborations, linguistic examples in diverse languages, proposals for further reading, and exercises with answer keys. Kim Gerdes and Sylvain Kahane have been collaborating for 20 years and have published together more than 40 articles. They have been interested in different aspects of the syntax of languages. After working on formal modeling of word order in German and French, they started in 2008 to develop annotated corpora in dependency syntax for spoken French, focusing both on theoretical problems of dependency analysis and on questions more specifically raised by oral productions, notably concerning the limits of syntax.

Download or read book Language and Colonial Power written by Johannes Fabian and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-08-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "..a work of very high scholarship and of a particularly valuable cultural critique...Fabian shows that European scholars, missionaries, soldiers, travellers, and administrators in Central Africa during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century used Swahili as a mode of extending their domination over African territories and people. The language was first studied and characterized, then streamlined for use among laboring people, then regulated as such fields as education and finance were also regulated. Any student of what has been called Africanist discourse, or of imperialism will find Language and Colonial Power an invaluable and path-breaking work (from Foreword).

Download or read book Donum Grammaticum written by Hannah Rosén and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume treat issues in Hannah Rosen's many fields of scholarly interest. Most of the articles deal with subjects in Latin linguistics and philology; others treat Celtic linguistics and philology, while some combine the two. A number of the papers take Hannah Rosen's own work as their point of departure: especially, research on nominalization and periphrasis; on tense use and narrative structure; on translation technique. The authors adopt a variety of perspectives and approaches. This volume includes many contributions that are descriptive, comparative, or historical in nature, as well as some reflecting a literary orientation. A few authors use the text and its structure as their framework. A wide range of approaches to syntactical analysis on various levels of expression is prominently represented in the work of many of the contributors.

Download or read book Ideologies of Language written by John E. Joseph and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the study of language ideologically neutral? If so, is this study objective and autonomous? One of the most cherished assumptions of modern academic linguistics is that the study of language is, or should be, ideologically neutral. This professed ideological neutrality goes hand-in-hand with claims of scientific objectivity and explanatory autonomy. Ideologies of Language counters these claims and assumptions by demonstrating not only their descriptive inaccuracy but also their conceptual incoherence.
