Download or read book Queers in History written by Ian McKellen and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody loves secrets. We're all fascinated by celebrities, the rich, the powerful, and the famous. When scandals break out we want to read all about it. And the surest way to get anyone's attention is to start talking about sex. Now there's a book that has all this and much more, with over 900 amazing stories about prominent people from ancient Egypt to today who, in their personal lives, all had one thing in common. They were all gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Movie stars, musicians, kings, queens, soldiers, athletes, scientists, and even religious leaders from all over the world. The book is called Queers in History. It's a funny title and definitely a fun read. But there's also tons of serious useful information revealing a secret side of these famous personalities. Queers in History reveals the compelling stories about some of your favorite folks that are usually left out of their official biographies. Did you know that, for instance: * Joan Crawford and Marilyn Monroe had a one-night-stand? * Leonardo da Vinci was imprisoned twice for same-sex affairs? * Leonard Bernstein had an affair with an Israeli soldier? * The lesbian wife of a gay actor accused Howard Hughes of having an affair with her husband shortly before his mysterious murder? * The founder of Shinto Buddhism also founded a tradition of male-male love in Japan? * Angelina Jolie wanted to marry her "Firefox" co-star Jenny Shimizu? * The wife of one US president moved her girlfriend into the White House, and another US President shared his White House bed with the male chief of his security detail? * An heroic soldier in the US Revolution was actually a woman in disguise, who "married" another woman after her service in the Continental Army? * And in 1886, when US officials asked an Indian tribe to send "their best woman" to visit Washington, DC, the tribe chose instead to send a man in a dress? These are just a few of the historical facts you'll learn from Queers in History. It took 17 years to gather the information that fills over 500 pages in this trade paperback. One of the most amazing facts is that Queers in History is only $13.67 if you pre-order on Amazon.com . That's a lot less than a penny per fact, all from reliable sources. But Queers in History is much more than a collection of facts. Each person's life is presented as an entertaining short story, showing how their sexuality affected their lives and their work. And though it's about gay people, it's something everybody will be interested in, especially straight people who may not know as much as they think they do about some of their favorite celebrities. The previous edition got rave reviews in USA Today, Wired magazine, The Village Voice, and many others.Put this book on your coffee table before your next party and a few minutes later it will be the main topic of conversation. Just don't put it in the bathroom because the first person in there may lock the door and not come out until they've finished reading it. My name's Keith Stern, I wrote Queers in History, and I've produced some of the most popular biographical websites on the Internet. Sir Ian McKellen, better known as Gandalf and Magneto in the movies, has contributed an inspirational foreword to the book. Visit www.queersinhistory.com for more information.

Barrier covers not only the life of Barks but his particular thematic preoccupations (the "rescue theme") in what parent/child roles are reversed is documented with considerable wisdom, for instance). The photos of Barks, his house, and other people he worked with are precious glimpses on an important period in comic book history, and the many drawings by Barks and others constitute a real treasure trove for both fans and scholars..." --Catherine Yronwode. The Buyer's Guide For Comic Fandom This beautifully illustrated book captures the essence of Carl Barks, the man who brought Donald Duck into the hearts of a generation of Americans. Only Michael Barrier, who is uniquely familiar with both Bark's life and works, could assemble this definitive introduction to Barks' creations. Barrier traces Barks' life as a young cartoonist who eventually joined the Walt Disney Studios during the depression. Upon joining the Western Publishing Company in 1942, Barks produced vivid tales which captured comic book readers' imaginations for the following two decades. Barks brought to life such unforgettable characters as Uncle Scrooge, the Beagle Boys, and the other zany inhabitants of Duckburg. Although Barks' art was readily accessible to children, his stories contained satire aimed at the foibles of a nation immersed in the Cold War and new-found material success. In addition to chronicling Barks' life, this book provides a definitive bibliography of Barks' works. The bibliography is enhanced by quotations from Barks on specific works as well as comments from Kim Weston. Cost $90.00 plus shipping and handling.

Download or read book Beta maritima written by enrico biancardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along the undisturbed shores, especially of the Mediterranean Sea and the European North Atlantic Ocean, is a quite widespread plant called Beta maritima by botanists, or more commonly sea beet. Nothing, for the inexperienced observer's eye, distinguishes it from surrounding wild vegetation. Despite its inconspicuous and nearly invisible flowers, the plant has had and will have invaluable economic and scientific importance. Indeed, according to Linnè, it is considered "the progenitor of the beet crops possibly born from Beta maritima in some foreign country". Recent molecular research confirmed this lineage. Selection applied after domestication has created many cultivated types with different destinations. The wild plant always has been harvested and used both for food and as a medicinal herb. Sea beet crosses easily with the cultivated types. This facilitates the transmission of genetic traits lost during domestication, which selection processes aimed only at features immediately useful to farmers and consumers may have depleted. Indeed, as with several crop wild relatives, Beta maritima has been successfully used to improve cultivated beet’s genetic resistances against many diseases and pests. In fact, sugar beet cultivation currently would be impossible in many countries without the recovery of traits preserved in the wild germplasm. Dr. Enrico Biancardi graduated from Bologna University. From 1977 until 2009, he was involved in sugar beet breeding activity by the Istituto Sperimentale per le Colture Industriali (ISCI) formerly Stazione Sperimentale di Bieticoltura (Rovigo, Italy), where he released rhizomania and cercospora resistant germplasm and collected seeds of Mediterranean sea beet populations as a genetic resource for breeding and ex situ conservation. Retired since 2009, he still collaborates with several working breeders, in particular, at the USDA Agricultural Research Stations, at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS), and at the Athens University (AUA). He has edited books, books chapters and authored more than 150 papers. Dr. Lee Panella is a plant breeder and geneticist with the USDA-ARS at Fort Collins, Colorado. He earned his B.S. in Crop and Soil Science from Michigan State University, an M.S. in Plant Breeding from Texas A&M University, and a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California at Davis. His research focus is developing disease resistant germplasm using sugar beet wild relatives. He is chairman of the USDA-ARS Sugar Beet Crop Germplasm Committee and has collected and worked extensively with sea beet. Dr. Robert T. Lewellen was raised on a ranch in Eastern Oregon and obtained a B.S. in Crop Science from Oregon State University followed by a Ph.D. from Montana State University in Genetics. From 1966 to 2008 he was a research geneticist for the USDA-ARS at Salinas, California, where he studied the genetics of sugar beet and as a plant breeder, often used sea beet as a genetic source to produce many pest and disease resistant sugar beet germplasm and parental lines, while authoring more than 100 publications.

Book excerpt: 'Reading Veering generates the intense joy of veering. An exuberantly successful medium, Royle calls up swarms of passages from literature and elsewhere where the word or concept "e;veering"e; is salient. On this basis he creates new theories of literature and of creative writing's place in criticism. Royle's best book yet.'J. Hillis Miller, Distinguished Research Professor of Comparative Literature and English, University of California, Irvine'Nicholas Royle is one of the most interesting, inventive, and provocative thinkers of literary language currently writing in English, and he has done something truly extraordinary here. By allowing a theory of literature to emerge right from the traces of the veering movements of fiction and poetry, he has thoroughly renewed the possibility of thinking in the wake of our literary encounters. Veering issues a general license to read, once again, with all the wonder, generosity, and freedom it calls forth on every page.'Professor Peggy Kamuf, University of Southern California'Every genre, every great work has its way of veering. This fascinating, richly compendious, necessary book shows the way forward for literary studies. Nicholas Royle's twisty key opens and magically re-opens the wonders of the canon and beyond. The spiralling pleasure he takes in doing so lightens, refreshes, instructs and inspires. Royle is a wonderful communicator about literature and theory and a uniquely powerful, original critical voice. This is his most exciting and widely relevant work so far.'Sarah Wood, University of KentReflections on the figure of veering form the basis for a new theory of literatureExploring images of swerving, loss of control, digressing and deviating, Veering provides new critical perspectives on all major literary genres: the novel, poetry, drama, the short story and the essay, as well as creative writing Royle works with insights from Lewis Carroll, Freud, Adorno, Raymond Williams, Edward Said, Deleuze, Cixous and Derrida. With wit and irony he investigates veering in the writings of Jonson, Milton, Dryden, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Melville, Hardy, Proust, Lawrence, Bowen, J.H. Prynne and many others. Contrary to a widespread sense that literature has become increasingly irrelevant to our culture and everyday life, Royle brilliantly traces a strange but compelling literary turn

Book The Politics of Housing in Post Colonial Africa

Download or read book The Politics of Housing in Post Colonial Africa written by Kirsten Rüther and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housing matters, no matter when or where. This volume of collected essays on housing in colonial and postcolonial Africa seeks to elaborate the how and the why. Housing is much more than a living everyday practice. It unfolds in its disparate dimensions of time, space and agency. Context dependent, it acquires diverse, often ambivalent, meanings. Housing can be a promise, an unfulfilled dream, a tool of self- and class-assertion, a negotiation process, or a means to achieve other ends. Our focus lies in analyzing housing in its multifacetedness, be it a lens to offer insights into complex processes that shape societies; be it a tool of empire to exercise control over private relations of inhabitants; or be it a means to create good, obedient and productive citizens. Contributions to this volume range from the field of history, to architecture and urban planning, African Studies, linguistics, and literature. The individual case studies home in on specific aspects and dimensions of housing and seek to bring them into dialogue with each other. By doing so, the volume aims to add to the vibrant academic debate on studying urban practices and their significance for current social change.

Book Philosophy in a Time of Terror

Download or read book Philosophy in a Time of Terror written by Giovanna Borradori and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for Philosophy in a Time of Terror was born hours after the attacks on 9/11 and was realized just weeks later when Giovanna Borradori sat down with Jürgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida in New York City, in separate interviews, to evaluate the significance of the most destructive terrorist act ever perpetrated. This book marks an unprecedented encounter between two of the most influential thinkers of our age as here, for the first time, Habermas and Derrida overcome their mutual antagonism and agree to appear side by side. As the two philosophers disassemble and reassemble what we think we know about terrorism, they break from the familiar social and political rhetoric increasingly polarized between good and evil. In this process, we watch two of the greatest intellects of the century at work.

Book Multilingual Digital Storytelling

Download or read book Multilingual Digital Storytelling written by Jim Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classrooms are increasingly multicultural in their social composition, and students are increasingly connected, through digital media, to local and global networks. However, pedagogy has failed to take full advantage of the opportunities these resources represent. Multilingual Digital Storytelling draws attention to the interfaces between learner engagement, creativity and critical digital literacy, as well as addressing the multilingual within the multiliteracies framework. Addressing a significant gap in the field of multiliteracies by focusing on multilingualism, this book explores new digital spaces for language learning and methods of extending understandings of youth literacy in an increasingly interconnected world. Drawing on innovative and multi-site research projects based in mainstream and community schools in London and overseas, this book discusses how young people become engaged creatively and critically with literacy by demonstrating how digital storytelling can be used as a tool for language development. The book begins by considering linguistic, cultural, cognitive and social dimensions of language learning from a theoretical perspective, whilst the second part focuses on practical case studies that reflect and illustrate these theoretical principles. Offering a powerful new perspective on multiliteracies pedagogy, Multilingual Digital Storytelling will appeal to researchers and academics in the fields of education, applied linguistics, sociology and youth and community studies. It will also be an invaluable resource for teachers, teacher educators, curriculum planners and policymakers.

Book The Effectiveness of Environmental Law

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Environmental Law written by Sandrine Maljean-Dubois (juriste)) and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third volume in the European Environmental Law Forum (EELF) book series. The EELF is a non-profit initiative of environmental law scholars and practitioners from across Europe aiming to support intellectual exchange on the development and implementation of international, European and national environmental law in Europe. One of the activities of the EELF is an annual conference. This book is comprised of fifteen contributions presented at the Third EELF Conference in Aix-en-Provence, hosted by the Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium, at Aix-Marseille University, September 2015. The central topic of the book is the effectiveness of environmental law. The impressive development in environmental law has not always been matched by corresponding improvements in environmental quality. The threats to our environment and, by extension, to our health have never been so numerous or serious. But paradoxically, the effectiveness of environmental law has been a long-neglected issue. This book offers a fruitful and stimulating dialogue between practitioners and academics, from varied countries and varied fields, combining empirical and theoretical approaches. The contributions go from classical-but still necessary-tools (control, criminal, administrative, civil sanctions, liability rules, strengthening of the regulatory structure, and the role of judges), to more innovative ones (public participation, effectiveness of instrument mixes, collaborative governance, hybrid governance, and private environmental enforcement). (Series: European Environmental Law Forum, Vol. 3) Subject: Environmental Law, European Law]
