Download or read book Ethnobotany written by Gary J. Martin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnoecology has blossomed in recent years into an important science because of the realization that the vast body of knowledge contained in both indigenous and folk cultures is being rapidly lost as natural ecosystems and cultures are being destroyed by the encroachment of development. Ethnobotany and ethnozoology both began largely with direct observations about the ways in which people used plants and animals and consisted mainly of the compilation of lists. Recently, these subjects have adopted a much more scientific and quantitative methodology and have studied the ways in which people manage their environment and, as a consequence, have used a much more ecological approach. This manual of ethnobotanical methodology will become an essential tool for all ethnobiologists and ethnoecologists. It fills a significant gap in the literature and I only wish it had been available some years previously so that I could have given it to many of my students. I shall certainly recommend it to any future students who are interested in ethnoecology. I particularly like the sympathetic approach to local peoples which pervades this book. It is one which encourages the ethnobotanical work by both the local people themselves and by academically trained researchers. A study of this book will avoid many of the arrogant approaches of the past and encourage a fair deal for any group which is being studied. This manual promotes both the involvement oflocal people and the return to them of knowledge which has been studied by outsiders.

Book Economic Botany Data Collection Standard

Download or read book Economic Botany Data Collection Standard written by Frances E. M. Cook and published by Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. This book was released on 1995 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of the Economic botany data collection standard is to provide a system whereby uses of plants in their cultural context can be described, using standardised descriptors and terms, and attached to taxonomic data sets. Studes on the uses of plants are becoming increasingly important and the standardisation of terms and a unified system to describe uses would be of enormous benefit to gatherers of information..."--Page 1.

Book Trees and Shrubs of British Columbia

Download or read book Trees and Shrubs of British Columbia written by and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The woody plant flora of British Columbia is rich and diverse. In the majestic rain forests of teh coast and the expansive grasslands of the interior, in river valleys and alpine meadows, trees or shrubs usually dominate the plant communities. Trees and Shrubs of British Columbia is the definitive guide to all native and naturalized species of woody plants in the province. It is comprehensive and technically complete, yet easy to use. T. Christopher Brayshaw describes almost 300 species of trees and shrubs, as well as many subspecies and varieties. Each description is accompanied by beautifully detailed illustrations of leaves, flowers, fruit, and woody parts. Effective keys and comparative diagrams aid in identification.

Book The Oligocene Haynes Creek Flora of Eastern Idaho

Download or read book The Oligocene Haynes Creek Flora of Eastern Idaho written by Daniel I. Axelrod and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This flora of 70 species is dominated by deciduous trees, many with descendants in China. Precipitation was 890 mm, mean annual temperature 12.5°C, the annual range 10°C, and freezing rare. Elevation was about 1000 meters. Comparison with the Horse Prairie flora, 30 miles east and across the present continental divide, indicates that the divide was then low and discontinuous, with warmer climate to the east.

Book The Miocene Purple Mountain Flora of Western Nevada

Download or read book The Miocene Purple Mountain Flora of Western Nevada written by Daniel I. Axelrod and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, nine florules from the Chloropagus Formation near Fernley, Nevada, are dated at 14.7-13.4 million years. The author finds that dominant mixed conifer forest and sclerophyll woodland species of the Sierra Nevada-Klamath region replaced exotic deciduous hardwoods in the two lowest sites. He concludes that this change reflects the loss of adequate summer rain as upwelling from a colder ocean resulted from spreading East Antarctic ice.

Book Phytochemical Induction by Herbivores

Download or read book Phytochemical Induction by Herbivores written by Douglas W. Tallamy and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1991-07-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research indicates that plants may be defended by mechanisms activated only after a plant has been challenged by a herbivore. Examines these inducible defenses and provides a framework for future advances in the field. Also serves as a summary and compilation of major studies to date on important areas of plant and insect ecology. While treating both vertebrates and invertebrates it covers mechanisms and models of long- and short-term induction. The impact of inducible phytochemicals on herbivores is extensively discussed as are pesticidal activity of inducible phytochemicals. Covers agricultural implications of inducible phytochemicals.

Book Catkin bearing Plants of British Columbia

Download or read book Catkin bearing Plants of British Columbia written by T. C. Brayshaw and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catkin-bearing trees and shrubs - willows, poplars, birches, alders and other woody plants - are an important group in British Columbia. They are found almost everywhere in the province, often dominating moister plant communities; but, despite their abundance, little is known about them. This newly revised edition is the most comprehensive and up-to-date work on catking-bearing plants in British Columbia. All 67 species are described and illustrated with detailed ink drawings by the author; and each has a distribution map. Diagnostic keys to the families, genera and species are also included. Catkin-Bearing Plants is an essential guide for biologists and naturalists studying forest ecology, and useful for anyone interested in trees and shrubs in British Columbia.
