Aquinas’ notion of essence becomes clearer in the light of Frege’s distinction between objects and concepts and his account of concepts as functions. He shows how the Cappadocians developed a real Trinitarian Ontology through their reshaping of the Aristotelian category of relation, which they rescued from the accidental dimension and inserted into the immanence of the one divine and eternal substance. This perspective made possible a new conception of individuation. No longer exclusively linked to substantial difference, as in classical Greek philosophy, the concept was instead founded on the mutual relation of the divine Persons. The Cappadocians' metaphysical reshaping was also closely linked to a new epistemological conception based on apophaticism, which shattered the logical closure of their opponents, and anticipated results that modern research has subsequently highlighted, Bridging the late antique philosophy with Patristics, Maspero' s study allows us to find the relational traces within the Trinity in the world and in history.

Moreover, understanding this relationship and its origins offers valuable resources and insights to contemporary Catholic theology. Of course, there are some negative preconceptions to overcome. Historically, some Catholic readers have been suspicious of Kierkegaard, viewing him as an irrational Protestant irreconcilably at odds with Catholic thought. Nevertheless, the favorable mention of Kierkegaard in John Paul II's Fides et Ratio is an indication that Kierkegaard's writings are not so easily dismissed. Catholic Theology after Kierkegaard investigates the writings of emblematic Catholic thinkers in the twentieth century to assess their substantial engagement with Kierkegaard's writings. Joshua Furnal argues that Kierkegaard's writings have stimulated reform and renewal in twentieth-century Catholic theology, and should continue to do so today. To demonstrate Kierkegaard's relevance in pre-conciliar Catholic theology, Furnal examines the wider evidence of a Catholic reception of Kierkegaard in the early twentieth century--looking specifically at influential figures like Theodor Haecker, Romano Guardini, Erich Przywara, and other Roman Catholic thinkers that are typically associated with the ressourcement movement. In particular, Furnal focuses upon the writings of Henri de Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and the Italian Thomist, Cornelio Fabro as representative entry points.

Book excerpt: This work proposes a new proof of the existence of God, based on a development of elements found in Patristic and Scholastic philosophical tradition, in particular of St. Augustine, St. Anselm and St. Thomas Aquinas. Traditionally the existence of God has been seen in relation to the essence of Truth: its unchanging and eternal essence is used as a proof of the eternal existence of a personal God. The strategy of our demonstration is to investigate the concept of Truth from the perspective of a definition, which can be called “inclusive”: it proposes to formulate, complementary to formal, purely abstract definitions of Truth, also a definition that includes the real personal elements that are necessarily implied in the abstract definition. It shows the necessity of including in it, in the first place, the primary Real Being, God, which is also the primary Intellect; and, related to it, our finite, human intellect, not necessary in itself, but of course essential to our very nature. Claudio Pierantoni is Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the University of Chile (Universidad de Chile) and Professor of Latin Literature at the Universidad de los Andes, Chile.
