Entra dentro de la categoría de la tragedia familiar o doméstica, ponderada por Aristóteles, en la Poética, como la más cualificada para desempeñar la finalidad primordial del arte trágico, que no consiste sino en representar de una forma tolerable nuestras experiencias más perturbadoras. En otras ocasiones, el incesto, cuando es un asunto secundario o periférico, admite otros tipos de tratamiento. Ejemplo preclaro de ello lo constituye su presencia en el corpus dramático de los máximos representantes del teatro isabelino y jacobino, de la Comedia nueva y del clasicismo francés: William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Lope de Vega (1562-1635) y Jean Racine (1639-1699), cuyo análisis, a la luz del tema en la literatura grecolatina, se lleva a cabo en el presente estudio.
