Como la noticia representa un recurso esencial en la toma de decisiones cotidianas porque incorpora un conocimiento simbólico del mundo compartido y legitimado institucionalmente, el periodismo desempeña una función vitalpara el perfeccionamiento de la democracia en la sociedad. La metodología seguida en la tesis tiene como propósito, como lo ha hecho Castells con relación al informacionalismo, de proponer algunos elementos de una teoría transcultural y exploratoria sobre el periodismo en las redes digitales. El amplio alcance del análisis, que reivindica como objeto el periodismo digital que emerge en todos los dominios sociales y expresiones culturales, ha motivado la desestimación de la posibilidad de un estudio comparativo circunscripto a las publicaciones españolas y brasileñas. En una definición sintética el periodismo digital es todo el producto discursivo que construye la realidad por medio de la singularidad de los eventos, que tiene como soporte de circulación las redes telemáticas o cualquier otro tipo de tecnología por donde setransmita señales numéricas y que incorpore la interacción con los usuarios a lo largo del proceso productivo. El periodismo digital es una de las actividades que se desarrolla en el ciberespacio, que es una visualización espacial de los sistemas mundiales de circulación y almacenamiento de datos en recorridos proporcionados por las actuales y futuras redes de comunicación. Éstas hacen posible la interacción de múltiples usuarios y permiten entradas y salidas de datos desde y hacia el aparato sensorial humano, la recogida de datos humanos/remotos, el control a través de la presencia personal de los usuarios y la total integración e intercomunicación con una vasta gama de productos inteligentes y entornos en el espacio real.
