Download or read book Distributing Status written by Samuel Clark and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorific rewards are all about status and illustrate status processes in a way that few other social phenomena do. Why do we have so many honorific awards and prizes? Although they are a major feature of modern societies, they have received little scholarly attention. Samuel Clark argues that answering this question requires a separate historical analysis of different awards and prizes. He presents a comprehensive explanation of the origins and evolution of state honours in the British Isles, France, and the Low Countries. Examining cultural, social, and political changes that led to the massive growth in state honours and shaped their characteristics, Distributing Status also demonstrates their functions as instruments of cultural power, collective power, disciplinary power, and status power. Clark supports his conclusions with a cross-cultural statistical analysis of twenty societies. Lucid and logical, Distributing Status explicates an important historical change in Western Europe while at the same time contributing to several bodies of sociological literature, including evolutionary theory, theories of collective action, writings on discipline in modern societies, and studies of status processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As France emerged from the Franco-Prussian War she embarked on a period of active colonialism, acquiring territories in South-East Asia and Africa. By the turn of the century much of north, west and central Africa was under French control. In order to police all of these territories, the French needed an army and so the French Foreign Legion was born. In this book, world-renowned Legion expert Martin Windrow analyses what it would have been like to be a member of the French Foreign Legion and how the experience, equipment, tactics and training of the Legion developed in the 80 years between their foundation and the outbreak of the First World War. He investigates their glory years in North Africa and Indochina, and draws extensively on memoirs from two British legionnaires, peppering the text with extraordinary first-hand accounts of the French Foreign Legion.

Known for draconian discipline and shrouded in mystery, the secrets of the Legion are guarded by those who have gained admittance into its elite society. In this thoroughly researched and impressive account, Porch reveals the mysteries surrounding a Legion of "unparalleled exoticism, pathos, and drama." Download or read book Legionnaire written by Simon Murray and published by Presidio Press. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A pleasure to read and nearly impossible to put down.” –Army Times “Embodies an experience that many have enjoyed in fantasy–few in reality.” –The Washington Post The French Foreign Legion–mysterious, romantic, deadly–is filled with men of dubious character, and hardly the place for a proper Englishman just nineteen years of age. Yet in 1960, Simon Murray traveled alone to Paris, Marseilles, and ultimately Algeria to fulfill the toughest contract of his life: a five-year stint in the Legion. Along the way, he kept a diary. Legionnaire is a compelling, firsthand account of Murray’s experience with this legendary band of soldiers. This gripping journal offers stark evidence that the Legion’s reputation for pushing men to their breaking points and beyond is well deserved. In the fierce, sun-baked North African desert, strong men cracked under brutal officers, merciless training methods, and barbarous punishments. Yet Murray survived, even thrived. For he shared one trait with these hard men from all nations and backgrounds: a determination never to surrender. “The drama, excitement, and color of a good guts-and-glory thriller.” –Dr. Henry Kissinger

Download or read book France in the Age of the Scientific State written by Robert G. Gilpin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles de Gaulle has often warned France and other European nations of the threat they face from advanced scientific and technological countries such as the United States and the Soviet Union. Robert Gilpin examines this "technological gap," which France fears, and the efforts France is making to introduce change and efficiency into her science administration. He discusses the gap as it affects all of Europe, and suggests that if western European nations are unable to form a common European administration of science policy, and remain the “main world importers of discoveries and exporters of brains,” they may become steadily weaker in international affairs. Download or read book Worldwide Army Medals of World War I A Personal Collection written by and published by LANCE SMALLSHAW. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started the medal collection for “A Selection of Global War Crosses and Medals for Bravery, Merit and Service for World War 1” in August 2017 when I purchased my first war cross, the 3rd French Republic - Croix de Guerre. It took me a further five months to complete the collection as seen. I had just completed a twenty or so years family history project researching (although not all that time spent researching) my paternal Great Uncles., three of which had sadly been killed in action during WW1. I was in the process of having their medals and uniform items framed when I started to research their war medals and this collection just led on from there. The collection is not complete but provides a very good representation (many original, some very rare with a few *Reproductions, due to cost and/or scarcity) of many of the army military bravery and merit awards that covers every location / world country that participated in WW1. I also decided where appropriate to include a few campaign medals and a few naval medals. I researched the information for each award, as I was unable to find a book or an individual article that provided all the information in one document. The collection continues to grow and I intend to include a selection of WW1 Campaign and Army Regimental Medals in the 2nd Edition. It is my wish that it will provide a global perspective of the enormity of the reach of WW1, many of the awards mentioned being issued posthumously. IN MEMORY OF MY 3 GREAT UNCLES, William, James and George Smallshaw. Author - Lance Smallshaw Belgium (Origin: Liverpool, UK) January 2018
