Download or read book The Arhoolie Foundation s Strachwitz Frontera Collection of Mexican and Mexican American Recordings written by Agustin Gurza and published by Chicano Archives. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Strachwitz Frontera Collection is the largest repository of commercially produced Mexican and Mexican American vernacular recordings in existence. It contains more than 130,000 individual recordings. Many are rare, and some are one of a kind. Although border music is the focus of the collection, it also includes notable recordings of other Latin forms, including salsa, mambo, sones, and rancheras. More than 40,000 of the recordings, all from the first half of the twentieth century, have been digitized with the help of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center and are available online through the University of California's Digital Library Program. Agustin Gurza explores the Frontera Collection from different viewpoints, discussing genre, themes, and some of the thousands of composers and performers whose work is contained in the archive. Throughout he discusses the cultural significance of the recordings and relates the stories of those who have had a vital role in their production and preservation. Rounding out the volume are chapters by Jonathan Clark, who surveys the recordings of mariachi ensembles, and Chris Strachwitz, the founder of the Arhoolie Foundation, who reflects on his six decades of collecting the music that makes up the Frontera Collection."--Publisher description.
Download or read book Reggaet n Cruise written by Patricio X. Maya and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After getting nearly crushed on his way to magic America, the migrant drifter most likely to fail posts a song that blows up on YouTube. Cringe factor is part of the viral charm. The flashy farmer must be a joke! But maybe he's the opposite of a joke. He'll sort that out for himself when he performs his smash hit at the flamboyant Reggaetón Cruise, which, thanks to subversive forces in the mainland, might be a gig to die for, literally. Thrown into the fray are three affluent Japanese sisters who'd signed up for Disneyland, not the Battle of Fallujah; an Estonian gamer groomed by the U.S. Army to draw foreign blood; an Ecuadorian jock with a chip on his shoulder reaching all the way back to torrid Guayaquil; a Liberian refugee gone-real-state-investor with a gospel to tell; and a potty-mouthed Salvadoran pupusera, who serves as an unlikely moral arbiter from afar. Patricio X. Maya's characters may be from all over, but they're all caught in a single net of immeasurable proportions. This net is our common destiny, of course -our plot- Capitalism, Globalization, and Hyperreality. Whether we cry or laugh, or decide to get mad, Reggaetón Cruise audaciously decodes the hologram of itself that much of the world has become.

Download or read book The Untranslatable Image written by Alessandra Russo and published by . This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first contacts between European conquerors and the peoples of the Americas, objects were exchanged and treasures pillaged, as if each side were seeking to appropriate tangible fragments of the "world" of the other. Soon, too, the collision between the arts of Renaissance Europe and pre-Hispanic America produced new objects and new images with the most diverse usages and forms. Scholars have used terms such as syncretism, fusion, juxtaposition, and hybridity in describing these new works of art, but none of them, asserts Alessandra Russo, adequately conveys the impact that the European artistic world had on the Mesoamerican artistic world, nor treats the ways in which pre-Hispanic traditions, expertise, and techniques—as well as the creation of post-Conquest images—transformed the course of Western art. This innovative study focuses on three sets of paradigmatic images created in New Spain between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries—feather mosaics, geographical maps, and graffiti—to propose that the singularity of these creations does not arise from a syncretic impulse, but rather from a complex process of "untranslatability." Foregrounding the distances and differences between incomparable theories and practices of images, Russo demonstrates how the constant effort to understand, translate, adapt, decode, transform, actualize, and condense Mesoamerican and European aesthetics, traditions, knowledge, techniques, and concepts constituted an exceptional engine of unprecedented visual and verbal creativity in the early modern transatlantic world.
