Book Liberating Economics

Download or read book Liberating Economics written by Drucilla Barker and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberating Economics draws on central concepts from women's studies scholarship to construct a feminist understanding of the economic roles of families, caring labor, motherhood, paid and unpaid labor, poverty, the feminization of labor, and the consequences of globalization. Barker and Feiner consistently recognize the importance of social location -- gender, race, class, sexual identity, and nationality -- in economic processes shaping the home, paid employment, market relations, and the global economy. Throughout they connect women's economic status in the industrialized nations to the economic circumstances surrounding women in the global South. Rooted in the two disciplines, this book draws on the rich tradition of interdisciplinary work in feminist social science scholarship to construct a parallel between the notions that the "personal is political" and "the personal is economic." Drucilla K. Barker is Professor of Economics and Women's Studies, Hollins University. Susan F. Feiner is Associate Professor of Economics and Women's Studies, University of Southern Maine.

Book Global Slump

Download or read book Global Slump written by David McNally and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2010-12-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Slump analyzes the global financial meltdown as the first systemic crisis of the neoliberal stage of capitalism. It argues that—far from having ended—the crisis has ushered in a whole period of worldwide economic and political turbulence. In developing an account of the crisis as rooted in fundamental features of capitalism, Global Slump challenges the view that its source lies in financial deregulation. The book locates the recent meltdown in the intense economic restructuring that marked the recessions of the mid-1970s and early 1980s. Through this lens, it highlights the emergence of new patterns of world inequality and new centers of accumulation, particularly in East Asia, and the profound economic instabilities these produced. Global Slump offers an original account of the “financialization” of the world economy during this period, and explores the intricate connections between international financial markets and new forms of debt and dispossession, particularly in the Global South. Analyzing the massive intervention of the world’s central banks to stave off another Great Depression, Global Slump shows that, while averting a complete meltdown, this intervention also laid the basis for recurring crises for poor and working class people: job loss, increased poverty and inequality, and deep cuts to social programs. The book takes a global view of these processes, exposing the damage inflicted on countries in the Global South, as well as the intensification of racism and attacks on migrant workers. At the same time, Global Slump also traces new patterns of social and political resistance—from housing activism and education struggles, to mass strikes and protests in Martinique, Guadeloupe, France and Puerto Rico—as indicators of the potential for building anti-capitalist opposition to the damage that neoliberal capitalism is inflicting on the lives of millions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research shows there is a surprisingly high exodus of successful female executives from the corporate sector. This takes place at a level well beyond the conventional family-raising stage and appears to be related to more fundamental issues of life-style choice and alienation from a male corporate culture. This book explores the phenomenon through a qualitative study of 16 women who have reached middle or senior management levels and paused to review their careers. By telling their stories in detail, Marshall explores their experiences of working in male-dominated cultures, being change agents, why they decided to leave and what their next steps are. Book Unequal Burden

Download or read book Unequal Burden written by Lourdes Beneria and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1992-08-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debt crisis and global economic changes of the 1980s caused Third World nations to restructure economic policies, community resources, the labor market, and intra-household divisions of labor. These changes swelled the ranks of the unemployed, the poor, and the malnourished. Women, in particular, were affected negatively by processes of structural adjustment because they represent a disproportionate share of the world's poor, are increasingly represented among low-wage workers, and are forced to balance wage work with subsistence and domestic production in meeting household needs. Using country-based studies, this text offers new perspectives on the consequences of economic crisis in terms of changing state practices and household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and women's work.
