Download or read book CRIME AND THE NATIVE AMERICAN written by David Lester and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is believed that Native Americans have a high frequency of criminal behavior and in addition are subjected to great discrimination by the criminal justice system, as are other minority groups. This book explores the data and research that has been conducted on criminal behavior in Native Americans in order to see whether these beliefs are indeed valid. To prepare this book the author researched and read all published articles on criminal behavior in Native Americans. Chapters are grouped into five sections. Part 1 covers the personal and social conditions of Native Americans and the frequency of crime and alcohol. Part 2 explores crimes and misdemeanors, murder, child abuse and neglect. Part 3 examines theories of Native American criminal behavior, social structure, and social process theories. Part 4 covers the criminal justice system, Native American policing, law and the courts, prisons and probation, and discrimination in the criminal justice system. Part 5 provides three individual cases and three major conclusions drawn from research and commentary in this book. The reader is also provided with sample table forms of arrest rates, homicide rates by age, and rates of incarceration of various racial and/or ethnic groups. The causes of criminal behavior in Native Americans may differ from the causes of criminal behavior in other ethnic groups, and the useful preventative strategies may correspondingly differ. This text examines the extent to which those possibilities may be true.

Download or read book Queering Criminology written by Matthew Ball and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queer criminological work is at the forefront of critical academic criminology, responding to the exclusion of queer communities from criminology, and the injustices that they experience through the criminal justice system. This volume draws together both theoretical and empirical contributions that develop the growing scholarship being produced at the intersection of 'queer' and 'criminology'. Reflecting the diversity of research that is undertaken at this intersection, the contributions to this volume offer a deeper theoretical and conceptual development of this field alongside empirical research that illustrates the continued relevance and urgency of such scholarship. The contributions consider what it means to be queering criminology in the current political, social, and criminological climate, and chart directions along which this field might develop in order to ensure that greater social and criminal justice for LGBTIQ communities is achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MALE CRIME AND DEVIANCE seeks to explore in-depth the types of offenses most identified with and committed by males, dynamics of male crime, characteristics of male offenders, how male criminality and delinquency compare with and differ from female delinquent and criminal behavior, explanations for male crime, and efforts at combating crime in this country. Particular attention is given to exploring the relationship between male aggression and masculinity, as well as the role that testosterone and other biological factors play in male crime and violence. The book also focuses on the correlation between male violence and aggressive behavior and firearms, violence involving intimates, male sexual violence, bias crimes, workplace violence, terrorism, male perpetrated sexual offenses, youth gang crime, and school violence. These areas of male criminality and deviance are examined within the context of all male offending, arrest, self-report, and inmate data, along with criminological theoretical approaches to understanding the causes and related factors of male deviant behavior. The book is written primarily for undergraduate and graduate level students for coursework in criminal justice, criminology, male aggression, violent behavior, homicide, youth studies, gang studies, delinquency, law, law enforcement, sociology, social science, psychology, biology, and related areas of study. However, it is appropriate as well for academicians, social scientists, psychologists, law officers, medical workers, and a general readership with a vested interest in antisocial behavior and its implications on the greater society.

Download or read book Delinquency and Crime written by J. David Hawkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-29 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is crime persistent over generations, within families and within certain individuals? Is crime the manifestation of an inherited latent trait or the result of a failure of socialization and norm-setting processes? Why do youths commit crimes? Delinquency and Crime contains essays by nine leading criminologists that seek to answer these and other questions by describing current theories of crime and the research evidence that supports them. The authors' views on crime causation go beyond traditional criminological theories of strain, cultural deviance, social control, differential association and social learning to present emerging and integrated models of the origins of crime, including antisocial peer socialization, social development, interactional theory, behavior genetics, and community determinants. Each essay explores the practical implication of the authors' theoretical work for crime prevention and control.

Download or read book Children and Crime written by Connie M. Tang and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and Crime offers a multidisciplinary and research-based approach to the study of child maltreatment and juvenile delinquency. Connie M. Tang first examines children as victims of maltreatment, exploring how developmental trauma and societal factors influence children’s behavior and psyche. Topics covered include child neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and psychological abuse. Later chapters address how children come into conflict with the law and discuss gang membership and substance abuse. Engaging, real-life case studies illustrate the intersectionality of race, gender, and crime, as well as the role of Child Protective Services and juvenile courts. In particular, Tang examines how abuse and neglect can later play a role in a child’s delinquency. Children and Crime provides an innovative and accessible text for psychology, social work, and criminal justice courses in child abuse, neglect, and delinquency.
