Download or read book For Peace and Money written by Jennifer Siegel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late imperial period until 1922, the British and French made private and government loans to Russia, making it the foremost international debtor country in pre-World War I Europe. To finance the modernization of industry, the construction of public works projects, the building of railroads, and the development of the military-industrial complex, Russia's ministers of finance, municipal leaders, and nascent manufacturing class turned, time and time again, to foreign capital. From the forging of the Franco-Russian alliance onwards, Russia's needs were met, first and foremost, by France and Great Britain, its allies, and diplomatic partners in the developing Triple Entente. Russia's continued access to those ready lenders ensured that the empire of the Tsars would not be tempted away from its alliance and entente partners. This web of financial and political interdependence affected both foreign policy and domestic society in all three countries. The Russian state was so heavily indebted to its western creditors, rendering those western economies almost prisoners to this debt, that the debtor nation in many ways had the upper hand; the Russian government at times was actually able to dictate policy to its French and British counterparts. Those nations' investing classes-which, in France in particular, spanned not only the upper classes but the middle, rentier class, as well-had such a vast proportion of their savings wrapped up in Russian bonds that any default would have been catastrophic for their own economies. That default came not long after the Bolshevik Revolution brought to power a government who felt no responsibility, whatsoever, for the debts accrued by the tsars for the purpose of oppressing Russia's workers and peasants. The ensuing effect on allied morale, the Anglo-French relationship, and, ultimately, on international relations in the twentieth century, was grim and far-reaching. Jennifer Siegel narrates a classic tale of money and power in the modern era-an age of economic interconnectivity and great power interdependency-involving such figures as Lord Revelstoke, chairman of Baring Brothers, the British and French Rothschild cousins, and Sergei Witte, Russia's authoritative finance minister during much of this age of expansion. For Peace and Money highlights the importance of foreign capital in policymaking on the origins and conduct of World War I.
Download or read book From Commercial Communication to Commercial Integration written by Markus A. Denzel and published by Franz Steiner Verlag Wiesbaden GmbH. This book was released on 2004 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the ages and in all parts of the world, communication between merchants has been the basic requirement for the integration of economic areas. The transfer of commercial know-how in different aspects such as trading customs, forms of payment and accounting, information on goods and their prices as well as knowledge of supply and demands, kinds and qualities did not only intensify the relationships of merchants or companies, but also of the different markets. The trading centres of the different regions across the continents - having always been the centre of economic knowledge - supported this process even further. From those centres new developments, techniques and learning processes were initiated and spread regionally and even worldwide. Thereby, the communication of merchants helped and forced the integration of new markets and areas into the emerging world economy. The volume contains contributions by Michael Bibikov, Renate Pieper, Mehmet Bulut, Claudia Schnurmann, Dennis O. Flynn and Arturo Girldez, Anne Radeff, Rafael Barqun Gil, Elena Lobanova, Gabriel Imboden, Om Prakash, Joan Carles Maix-Alts, Markus A. Download or read book Oman The Islamic Democratic Tradition written by Hussein Ghubash and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oman is the inheritor of a unique political tradition, the imama (imamate), and has a special place in the Arab Islamic world. From the eighth century and for more than a thousand years, the story of Oman was essentially a story of an original, minority, movement: the Ibadi. This long period was marked by the search for a just imama through the Ibadi model of the Islamic State. Hussein Ghubash’s well-researched book takes the reader on an historical voyage through geography, politics, and culture of the region, from the sixteenth century to the present day. Oman has long-standing ties with East Africa as well as Europe; the first contact between Oman and European imperialist powers took place at the dawn of the 1500s with the arrival of the Portuguese, eventually followed by the Dutch, French and British. Persuasive, thorough and drawing on Western as well as Islamic political theory, this book analyzes the different historical and geopolitical roles of this strategic country. Thanks to its millennial tradition, Oman enjoys a solid national culture and a stable socio-political situation. Today, it is moving steadily towards a democratic future.

Download or read book The French in Central America written by Thomas David Schoonover and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounts of the international relations of Central America have been dominated by the role of the United States and Great Britain. The role of France in Central America has largely been overshadowed by the other great powers. In a well-written, tight, and masterful synthesis, Thomas Schoonover redresses this imbalance.p Based on exhaustive multinational archival research, The French in Central America: Culture and Commerce, 1820-1930 details French attempts to establish a sphere of influence in Central America amongst the machinations of the British, Germans, and U.S. who all sought to dominate trade in Central America, control transit routes between the oceans, advise the national militaries, and influence cultural developments.p The book traces the involvement of the French in Central America from Independence to the unsteady economic years following World War I. Central America, in the nineteenth century was an area of vital importance to the French, who, along with a number of other powers, were interested in building a canal across the isthmus. The French in Central America demonstrates how the French used both economic and military means to further their desire for economic as well as colonial expansion. More importantly, the book examines how the French worked to develop strong cultural bonds with the nations of Central America through education, language schools, orders, and military missions. The French sought cultural advantage in considerable part because they hoped and expected commercial benefits to result.p The French in Central America: Culture and Commerce, 1820-1930 is an important addition to the growing literature on the international relations of the Americas. Thisbook will be of great interest to professors and students of French and Central American history as well as individuals interested in international relations and cultural studies.p

Download or read book Mosul before Iraq written by Sarah D. Shields and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2000-06-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon original source documents, Mosul before Iraq paints a portrait of the region during the turbulent nineteenth century. What emerges is a picture of citizens less focused on Europe or Istanbul and more on centuries-old relationships among its economic and social spheres. By arguing that the region belongs to a broader geographic, economic, and political space which crosses current national borders, the book explains the continuing conflict over the status of Mosul. Like bees building unconventional cells, Mosul's people innovated during the nineteenth century. They worked to incorporate new methods, new products, and new interactions into networks that they had already constructed in their crafts, their commerce, their city, and their region.
