Ces discours proviennent de trois documents : l'émission de radio Indicatif présent : Les enfants de la Loi 101 (2003) et les documentaires Les enfants de la Loi 101 (2007) et La Génération 101 (2008). Pour notre étude, nous partons d'un postulat selon lequel l'identité s'élabore essentiellement en discours et en interaction, et nous soutenons que l'argumentation joue un rôle prépondérant dans cette construction. Nous nous inscrivons dans une approche interactionniste de l'analyse du discours et nous nous inspirons de la rhétorique, des théories de l'argumentation et de l'approche modulaire afin d'étudier différentes constructions argumentatives à partir desquelles les informateurs présentent leurs rapports à la langue ainsi que leurs rapports à leur société d'origine et à leur société d'adoption. Les rapports à la langue sont envisagés à partir de l'analyse des structures concessives et des "échelles énonciatives", tandis que les rapports à la société d'origine et à la société d'adoption sont étudiés à partir des constructions définitoires à identité unique et à identités imbriquées et de la hiérarchisation de ces constructions.

Elle se construit et se déconstruit par intégrations successives, rejet et appropriation d'une ou plusieurs langues, au gré des migrations, des rencontres, des politiques adoptées, des contacts avec d'autres langues, des croyances et de l'imaginaire qui habitent le sujet. Souvent acquise par la naissance dans un territoire particulier, une nation ou une région donnée, la langue première peut aussi être transmise par filiation, héritée d'un ancêtre commun dont le souvenir relie et irrigue plusieurs lignées familiales en scellant leur identité culturelle et linguistique. Elle soumet ainsi aux sociolinguistes et aux didacticiens de nombreuses questions : le territoire est-il porteur d'identité linguistique ? Pourquoi et comment « marquons-nous » notre identité linguistique ? L'identité plurilingue existe-t-elle ? Parler la langue du territoire d'accueil pour le migrant ou le descendant de migrant, est-ce être « intégré » ? Quelle conséquence peut avoir l'appropriation de la langue du pays d'accueil sur la construction identitaire du sujet ? Ce sont autour de ces questions que se sont orientées les réflexions et les propositions des vingt chercheurs internationaux réunies dans cet ouvrage collectif.

Focusing on postcolonial Cameroon and using natural and questionnaire data, the book assesses the salience of linguistic and sociocultural hybridisation triggered by colonialism and, recently, globalisation in interaction in and across languages and cultures. The authors illustrate how the multilingual nature of the society and individuals’ multilingual repertoires shape patterns in the indigenisation and evolution of the ex-colonial languages, English and French, and Pidgin English.
