Book Violence and Resilience in Latin American Cities

Download or read book Violence and Resilience in Latin American Cities written by Kees Koonings and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are Latin American cities amongst the most violent in the world? Over the past decades Latin America has not only become the most urbanised of the regions of the so-called global South, it has also been the scene of the urbanisation of poverty and exclusion. Overall regional homicides rates are the highest in the world, a fact closely related to the spread and use of firearms by male youths, who are frequently involved in local and translocal forms of organised crime. In response, governments and law enforcements agencies have been facing mounting pressure to address violence through repressive strategies, which in turn has led to a number of consequences: law enforcement is often based on excessive violence and the victimisation of entire marginal populations. Thus, the dynamics of violence have generated a widespread perception of insecurity and fear. Featuring much original fieldwork across a broad array of case studies, this cutting edge volume focuses on questions not only of crime, insecurity and violence but also of Latin American cities’ ability to respond to these problems in creative and productive ways.

Book Historia m nima de Centroam rica

Download or read book Historia m nima de Centroam rica written by Rodolfo Pastor and published by El Colegio de Mexico AC. This book was released on 2011 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Funds of Knowledge and Identity Pedagogies for Social Justice

Download or read book Funds of Knowledge and Identity Pedagogies for Social Justice written by Moisés Esteban-Guitart and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume takes the US-derived concept and praxis of funds of knowledge and applies it globally to critically analyse current education in line with social justice, antiracism, and culturally sustaining pedagogies. Edited by one of the premier international voices for the funds of knowledge approach, and in particular funds of identity theory, chapters foreground first-hand, participatory, research-practice experiences with learners, schools, and local communities. These experiences demonstrate the positive, social-justice inspired pedagogical actions that result in, and reveal, powerful possibilities for a decolonialised, antiracist praxis that aims to eradicate deficit thinking in education. Further, the inclusion of voices that are typically "othered" in the construction and distribution of academic knowledge make this a seminal volume in the field. Ultimately, the volume will be of interest to scholars, students, and researchers working in the sociology of education, psychology of education, and those specifically dealing with antiracism, decolonialism, and equity within education.

Book Politics and History of Violence and Crime in Central America

Download or read book Politics and History of Violence and Crime in Central America written by Sebastian Huhn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights historical explanations to and roots of present phenomena of violence, insecurity, and law enforcement in Central America. Violence and crime are among the most discussed topics in Central America today, and sensationalism and fear of crime is as present as the increase of private security, the re-militarization of law enforcement, political populism, and mano dura policies. The contributors to this volume discuss historical forms, paths, continuities, and changes of violence and its public and political discussion in the region. This book thus offers in-depth analysis of different patterns of violence, their reproduction over time, their articulation in the present, and finally their discursive mobilization.
