Book excerpt: Depuis de nombreuses années, les Anticoagulants oraux (ACO) constituent la classe médicamenteuse entraînant le plus grand nombre d'accidents iatrogènes graves en France. Pourtant, les antithrombotiques en général, classe dont les Anticoagulants oraux font notamment partie, n'occupent que la 8ème place des classes les plus vendues en officine, bien loin derrière les Analgésiques, Psycholeptiques et autres Antibiotiques. Cette thèse a donc pour but d'expliquer ce paradoxe. Il sera tout d'abord montré que la coagulation est un phénomène physiologique à l'équilibre fragile, et dont la moindre perturbation peut avoir de graves conséquences pour le patient. Cet aspect, permet en partie d'expliquer pourquoi les ACO (et principalement les Antivitamines K) sont des médicaments difficiles à équilibrer, et donc pourquoi il y a tant d'accidents iatrogènes imputés aux Anticoagulants oraux en France. Mais alors, concrètement, quelles mesures sont prises pour tenter de réduire les risques liés à un traitement par ACO ? Tout d'abord, depuis 2008, de Nouveaux AntiCoagulants Oraux (NACO) ont fait leur apparition sur le marché, et même si leur utilisation a encore besoin d'être optimisée, les résultats dont nous disposons déjà sont encourageants en terme d'efficacité et de diminution des risques hémorragiques. Mais en plus de cette innovation thérapeutique, des dispositions ont été prises pour que le pharmacien d'officine accompagne encore mieux les patients sous Antivitamines K. Ainsi, au moyen d'un entretien pharmaceutique, le pharmacien peut maintenant faire le bilan des connaissances du patient sur son traitement, mais surtout, lui transmettre des informations pratiques qui lui permettront d'améliorer l'emploi de son médicament. Reste à savoir si ces innovations ainsi que d'autres à venir permettront un jour de réduire significativement les accidents iatrogènes sous Anticoagulants oraux.

Book excerpt: In Elements, Principles and Particles, Antonio Clericuzio explores the relationships between chemistry and corpuscular philosophy in the age of the Scientific Revolution. Science historians have regarded chemistry and corpuscular philosophy as two distinct traditions. Clericuzio's view is that since the beginning of the 17th century atomism and chemistry were strictly connected. This is attested by Daniel Sennert and by many hitherto little-known French and English natural philosophers. They often combined a corpuscular theory of matter with Paracelsian chemical (and medical) doctrines. Boyle plays a central part in the present book: Clericuzio redefines Boyle's chemical views, by showing that Boyle did not subordinate chemistry to the principles of mechanical philosophy. When Boyle explained chemical phenomena, he had recourse to corpuscles endowed with chemical, not mechanical, properties. The combination of chemistry and corpuscular philosophy was adopted by a number of chemists active in the last decades of the 17th century, both in England and on the Continent. Using a large number of primary sources, the author challenges the standard view of the corpuscular theory of matter as identical with the mechanical philosophy. He points out that different versions of the corpuscular philosophy flourished in the 17th century. Most of them were not based on the mechanical theory, i.e. on the view that matter is inert and has only mechanical properties. Throughout the 17th century, active principles, as well as chemical properties, are attributed to corpuscles. Given its broad coverage, the book is a significant contribution to both history of science and history of philosophy.

However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field.
