The aim of the book is to answer to the following research question: to what extent does ‘the long 1968’ mark and change protest history? Another axis of my research, equally important, is: how can one genuinely distinguish between a protest, an opposition, and a pastime? Where did radicalisation truly begin, and when was it solely an auto-perception as a dissident? In other words, how can one truly distinguish between a leisure activity like listening to Radio Free Europe or exploring an altered state of consciousness, and an explicit political activity like organising a protest or writing subversive texts? Among other aims, the books’s scope is to understand where a leisure activity ends, and a protest starts. By ‘practicing counterculture,’ did the youth wish to contest the system or simply express themselves? As method, oral history plays a crucial part. On a superficial level, the interviews helped to fill in the archival gap. However, oral testimonies proved to reveal much more than essential factual information. Oral history clarified how political and social events influenced the subjects' memory formation.

Book excerpt: Exploring Discourse Practices in Romanian is a glimpse into Romanians’ style of interaction, which has developed eclectically at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. It is oriented towards modern literacy while being deeply rooted in a long oral tradition, and paradoxically displays both attachment to local specifics and commitment to mimetic speech and act(ion)s imported from various cultural spaces. The book presents a characterisation of the Romanian cultural space in terms of various discourse practices, drawing on recent challenging theoretical proposals, and concluding with in-depth corpus-based analyses. The chapters focus on five main topics (the co-construction of discursive identities, discursive polyphony, textualisation of attitudes and emotions, conceptual metaphors, and grammaticalisation of context) explored in various discourse genres (political discourse, media discourse, professional discourse, face-to-face conversation, literature of memoires, and the usage of Romanian by non-natives). The theoretical framework utilised here is discourse analysis, defined in a broad sense (with regards to discourse patterns, pragmatic phenomena, conversation analysis, and rhetoric). The volume, having both a theoretical and an applied dimension, will appeal to an international readership, including researchers interested in current developments of pragmatics and discourse analysis.

În comentariul său pe Zaharia, Leupold (Exposition of Zecharia, p. 3) afirmă că finalul vorbirii profetice nu pare a fi un râu care seacă sub arșița soarelui, ci mai degrabă o glorioasă și bogată revărsare a revelației divine. Bentley ne spune că, în Noul Testament, „din Zaharia sunt citate treizeci și trei de porțiuni de text în cincizeci de locuri diferite. Multe dintre acestea au legătură directă cu Domnul Isus Hristos” (Michael Bentley, Building for the Glory of God, p. 92), iar Baldwin afirmă că „natura aproape enigmatică a unor texte din Zaharia invită la meditație. Mai ales pasajele care tratează tema păstorului, care au influențat gândirea lui Isus mai mult decât orice alt pasaj din Vechiul Testament” (Baldwin, Zecharia, p. 198). Prin aceste profeții mesianice, Duhul lui Dumnezeu pregătea inima poporului Său să traverseze pustiul perioadei Inter-testamentare și să păstreze vie așteptarea mesianică. Zaharia alunecă însă mai departe în istorie, spre vremurile în care cei din Iuda și locuitorii Ierusalimului Îl vor plânge pe Cel pe care L-au străpuns și vor pregăti astfel A Doua Venire a lui Hristos, când va domni din Ierusalim peste întreg pământul.
