Book La Bible et les mythologies du Proche Orient

Download or read book La Bible et les mythologies du Proche Orient written by Roger Warin and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book L eau enjeux politiques et th ologiques de Sumer la Bible written by Stéphanie Anthonioz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates a corpus of royal inscriptions and literary texts, with special emphasis on those that are mythological and biblical, stretching over several millennia from the early days of Sumer to the Biblical period, in order to determine the ways in which the concept of water was used, in particular the way it functions in the political and theological ideology of the time. Three literary motifs are the object of a careful study : the crossing of water, the flood and the water of abundance. Though their study shows diversity in evolution, transmission and reception, it appears that their function is common at the heart of the Mesopotamian political theology of royal mediation.

Download or read book L imaginaire du d moniaque dans la Septante written by Anna Angelini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a thorough analysis of demons in the Hebrew Bible and Septuagint in the wider context of the ancient Near East and the Greek world. Taking a fresh and innovative angle of enquiry, Anna Angelini investigates continuities and changes in the representation of divine powers in Hellenistic Judaism, thereby revealing the role of the Greek translation of the Bible in shaping ancient demonology, angelology, and pneumatology. Combining philological and semantic analyses with a historical approach and anthropological insights, the author both develops a new method for analyzing religious categories within biblical traditions and sheds new light on the importance of the Septuagint for the history of ancient Judaism.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. What was the function of representing deities and also humans in the ancient Near-East? Which were the different ways of making gods visible, and the specific functions of these representations? Might these material and visual representations help us to better understand official cults, as well as private cults? What was the role of images in the royal cult? Was the king the only "image" of the gods, or could all humans fulfill this role? Why were cult images forbidden? Does the biblical prohibition have any precedent or parallel in the ancient Near-East, or elsewhere? And how do the ways of representing gods and humans change in the absence of cultic images? The conference Representing Gods and Humans in the Ancient Near-East and in the Bible, held at the College de France, Paris, on May 5-6 2015, sought to shed light on these questions surrounding the image, a critical issue for our understanding of ancient as well as modern religions.

Book The Many Faces of the Goddess

Download or read book The Many Faces of the Goddess written by Izak Cornelius and published by Saint-Paul. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a multitude of female figures represented in the art of the ancient Near East and it has often been proved difficult to differentiate them. This study presents a collection of visual source material on godesses from Egypt, Ugarit, Syria and Palestine from c,1500 to 1000 BC. An introduction to the subject and previous research precedes a discussion of iconographic types (armed, seated, standing, equestrian and named women holding objects) and media (including reliefs, seals and amulets, bronze figurines, ivories and ostraca). Cornelius devises a typology of attributes for the goddess Anat, Astarte, Qedeshet and Asherah in order to define their individual qualities and provide a means by which these goddesses can be differentiated. Includes a large descriptive catalogue.

Book Among the Host of Heaven

Download or read book Among the Host of Heaven written by Lowell K. Handy and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two generations, there have been many studies on the structure, organization, and "function" of the gods of the Levantine and ancient Near Eastern worlds. In this important study, Lowell Handy provides new directions for thinking on this crucial topic, arguing that the structure of the pantheon worshiped in Syria-Palestine mirrored the social structure of the city-states in that region. While many recent studies have investigated the relations of the gods in both biblical and extra-biblical texts from the area, Handy shows that the pantheon functioned as a bureaucracy. This perspective may well be the primary key for understanding hierarchy among the gods.
