Book La Stregoneria in Italia

Download or read book La Stregoneria in Italia written by Andrea Romanazzi and published by Venexia Editrice. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Convents and the Body Politic in Late Renaissance Venice

Download or read book Convents and the Body Politic in Late Renaissance Venice written by Jutta Gisela Sperling and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late sixteenth-century Venice, nearly 60 percent of all patrician women joined convents, and only a minority of these women did so voluntarily. In trying to explain why unprecedented numbers of patrician women did not marry, historians have claimed that dowries became too expensive. However, Jutta Gisela Sperling debunks this myth and argues that the rise of forced vocations happened within the context of aristocratic culture and society. Sperling explains how women were not allowed to marry beneath their social status while men could, especially if their brides were wealthy. Faced with a shortage of suitable partners, patrician women were forced to offer themselves as "a gift not only to God, but to their fatherland," as Patriarch Giovanni Tiepolo told the Senate of Venice in 1619. Noting the declining birth rate among patrician women, Sperling explores the paradox of a marriage system that preserved the nobility at the price of its physical extinction. And on a more individual level, she tells the fascinating stories of these women. Some became scholars or advocates of women's rights, some took lovers, and others escaped only to survive as servants, prostitutes, or thieves.

Book excerpt: Mary In Our Life: An Atlas of the Names and Titles of Mary, The Mother of Jesus, and Their Place in Marian Devotion presents the 1,969 names, titles, and appellations used to identify the Blessed Virgin Mary over the centuries in terms of their history and related events. Within these titles and their history can be seen the official and private attitudes and prejudices of the times; government pressures, conflicts, and interdictions; internal problems within the Catholic Church; and startling examples of dedication, devotion, and piety. Taken together, Marian titles are a real-life story of the Catholic faith.

Book Introducation to Mariology

  • Author : Manfred Hauke
  • Publisher : Catholic University of America Press
  • Release : 2020-09-11
  • ISBN : 0813233372
  • Pages : 592 pages

Download or read book Introducation to Mariology written by Manfred Hauke and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Introduction to Mariology, Fr. Manfred Hauke provides a synthesis of Mariology and the biblical fundaments and development of Marian doctrine. While it works as a comprehensive introduction suitable for courses on the subject, it is in reality a panoramic view on the entire Marian doctrine, and as such will be essential for the theological formation of seminarians, priests, theologians, and all kinds of educated Catholics. With an unparalleled bibliographic citation of Marian literature across a dozen languages, it is also a perfect gateway to further research on the subject. It begins with Biblical doctrine, which is important especially for the dialogue with Protestant denominations: Catholic Mariology can be traced in its “embryonic” state already in Holy Scripture. From there Hauke presents a historical overview of the whole development of Marian doctrine, before developing further historical details in the subsequent chapters dedicated to systematic issues. The first systematic step approaches the figure of Mary through her role in the mystery of the Covenant between God and redeemed humanity; her being “Mother of God” and companion of the Redeemer is the “fundamental principle.” Then the four established Marian dogmas are presented: divine maternity, virginity, Immaculate Conception (in a chapter on Mary’s holiness more broadly), and bodily Assumption. A close look is given to maternal mediation which includes a part dedicated to the “Mater Unitatis”. A stand alone chapter is dedicated to Marian apparitions; authentic apparitions are presented as a part of prophetic charisma. The last chapter presents the basics on Marian devotion which culminates in the consecration to Mary (as a response to her maternal mediation). Already available in Spanish, Italian, Portugese, and Korean, this landmark work is published here for the first time in English.

Book Mary at the Foot of the Cross VI

Download or read book Mary at the Foot of the Cross VI written by and published by Academy of the Immaculate. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics always believe that there is a close association between the mystery of Christ in the Holy Eucharist and the mystery of Mary. This “sense of faith” is given theological and doctrinal exposition in this exciting new volume of Mary at the Foot of the Cross - VI: Marian Coredemption in the Eucharistic Mystery. Originally presented as Acts of the Marian symposium in England in the year of the Eucharist 2005, this precious collection of articles presents profound insights on the relationship between Marian Coredemption and Eucharistic mystery. Articles such as the late John Paul II’s teachings on Mary’s Presence in the Mass, Mary and the Eucharist in John of the Cross, St. Louis Grignion de Montfort, St. Veronica Giuliani, are only some of the most inspiring thought on the subject matter compiled in one decent volume. Ideal for scholarly research written by theologians and scholars, this volume is also accessible to non-professional readers as well. A must reading on the central truth of our Catholic faith: Mary and the Holy Eucharist.

Book Presence

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 135155333X
  • Pages : 341 pages

Download or read book Presence written by Robert Maniura and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In about 25 BC tribesmen of the kingdom of Meroe placed a bronze head of Augustus, cut from a full-length statue, beneath the steps of a temple of victory: the decapitated head of the Emperor was thus regularly trampled underfoot. Two millennia later, during the second Gulf War, Iraqis 'insulted' a toppled bronze statue of Saddam Hussein by beating it with their shoes. Do these chronologically distant but apparently related examples of the defamation of images imply that the persons represented were regarded by their detractors as in some way 'present' in the images? Presence: The Inherence of the Prototype within Images and Other Objects reconsiders the notion of 'presence' in objects. The first book to address the issue directly, it contains a series of case studies covering a broad geographical and chronological range from ancient Greece and the Incas to industrial America and contemporary India, as well as examples from the canon of western European art. The studies reveal the widespread evidence for this striking form of response and allow readers to see how 'presence' is evoked and either embraced or repressed in differing historical and cultural contexts. Featuring a variety of disciplines and approaches, the book will be of interest to students of art history, art theory, visual culture, anthropology, psychology and philosophy.
