Book La Austrialia del Esp ritu Santo

Download or read book La Austrialia del Esp ritu Santo written by Celsus Kelly O.F.M and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedro Fernández de Quirós was a remarkable navigator and explorer. Having sailed in 1595 as chief pilot in the ill-fated Spanish expedition to the Solomon Islands, he returned to the 'Austral Lands' - the area of the New Hebrides - in 1605 with another expedition, which is the subject of this volume. In his Introduction Father Kelly sets out to resolve some of the outstanding historical problems of this Quirós expedition in the light of recently discovered documents. At the same time he gives a brief description of the Franciscan missionary apostolate, its contribution to geographical discovery in the Pacific, and its missionary plans for the natives of the Austral lands. He also provides a systematic survey of source material in Spanish, Roman and other European archives. The volume contains 32 documents concerning the 1605 expedition, including Munilla's Relación, as well as the Franciscan Missionary Plan. All these have been translated by Father Kelly. Continued in Second Series 127, with which the main pagination is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1966.

Book excerpt: The Three Voyages of Captain Cook Round the World (Vol. 1-7) embodies a monumental amalgamation of exploration narratives, unraveling the vast complexities of 18th-century maritime expeditions. This collection encapsulates not only the navigational feats and geographical discoveries but also the rich tapestry of encountered cultures, thereby offering an unparalleled perspective into the intersections of exploration, imperialism, and ethnography. The literary styles range from detailed logs and meticulous journals to reflective essays, capturing the essence of adventure, the challenges of the unknown, and the ethereal beauty of the new worlds discovered. Their backgrounds, from seasoned explorers to naturalists, enrich the anthology with a multilayered narrative depth that straddles the line between historical document and literary masterpiece. Book Terre Napoleon

  • Release : 2021-11-09
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 235 pages

Download or read book Terre Napoleon written by Sir Ernest Scott and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main object of this book is to exhibit the facts relative to the expedition dispatched to Australia by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800 to 1804, and to consider certain opinions which have been for many years current regarding its purpose. The two main points which the book handles are: (1) whether Napoleon's object was to acquire territory in Australia and to found "a second fatherland" for the French there; and (2) whether it is true, as so often asserted, that the French plagiarized Flinders' charts for the purpose of constructing their own. On both these points conclusions are reached which are at variance with those commonly presented; but the evidence is placed before the reader with sufficient amplitude to enable him to arrive at a fair opinion on the facts, which, the author believes, are faithfully stated.

Book Alexander Dalrymple and the Expansion of British Trade

Download or read book Alexander Dalrymple and the Expansion of British Trade written by Howard T. Fry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Dalrymple was once described as the man who, after Hakluyt, had done most for the spread of Britain’s commerce. In this important new work, Dr. Fry discusses Dalrymple’s extensive contribution to knowledge about New Guinea and his pioneer attempt to establish a free port on Balambangan, and shows that his interest in the possibility of a North-West Passage and his influence in government circles were to be a major factor in bringing about Vancouver’s survey. Dalrymple’s research and theories about the great Southern Continent led to his appointment by the Royal Society as commander of the 1768 expedition, and though the Admiralty countermanded this decision and appointed instead Captain Cook, Dalrymple’s geographical researches were the motivating force behind the initiation of the search for Terra Australis. Dr. Fry throws interesting new light on Dalrymple’s relations with Cook, which, he argues, have been consistently misrepresented. Dalrymple became an expert navigator and surveyor during his years as captain of East India snows, and he became in turn hydrographer of the East India Company and the Admiralty. His work in this field revolutionised chart-making and was a contribution of incalculable value to Britain’s maritime supremacy in the nineteenth century. This classic book was first published in 1970.

Book Scurvy

  • Author : Jonathan Lamb
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-12-04
  • ISBN : 0691182930
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Scurvy written by Jonathan Lamb and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intellectual history of scurvy in the eighteenth century Scurvy—a disease usually associated with long stretches of maritime travel—generated extraordinary sensations. Eyes dazzled, skin was morbidly sensitive, emotions veered between disgust and delight. In this book, Jonathan Lamb presents an intellectual history of scurvy unlike any other, probing its cultural impact during the eighteenth-century age of geographic and scientific discovery. Drawing on historical accounts from scientists and voyagers as well as major literary works, Lamb explains the medical knowledge surrounding scurvy and the debates about its cause, prevention, and attempted cures. He argues that a “culture” of scurvy arose in the colony of Australia, which was prey to the disease in its early years, and identifies a literature of scurvy in the works of such figures as Herman Melville, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Francis Bacon, and Jonathan Swift. Masterful and illuminating, Scurvy shows how eighteenth-century journeys of discovery not only ventured outward to the ends of the earth, but were also an inward voyage into the realms of sensation and passion.

Book Indigenous Intermediaries

Download or read book Indigenous Intermediaries written by Shino Konishi and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection understands exploration as a collective effort and experience involving a variety of people in diverse kinds of relationships. It engages with the recent resurgence of interest in the history of exploration by focusing on the various indigenous intermediaries – Jacky Jacky, Bungaree, Moowattin, Tupaia, Mai, Cheealthluc and lesser-known individuals – who were the guides, translators, and hosts that assisted and facilitated European travellers in exploring different parts of the world. These intermediaries are rarely the authors of exploration narratives, or the main focus within exploration archives. Nonetheless the archives of exploration contain imprints of their presence, experience and contributions. The chapters present a range of ways of reading archives to bring them to the fore. The contributors ask new questions of existing materials, suggest new interpretive approaches, and present innovative ways to enhance sources so as to generate new stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This personal observation of Tanna, an island in the southern part of the Vanuatu archipelago, presents an extraordinary case study of cultural resistance. Based on interviews, myths and stories collected in the field, and archival research, The Tree and the Canoe analyzes the resilience of the people of Tanna, who, when faced with an intense form of cultural contact that threatened to engulf them, liberated themselves by re-creating, and sometimes reinventing, their own kastom. Following a lengthy history of Tanna from European contact, the author discusses in detail original creation myths and how Tanna people revived them in response to changes brought by missionaries and foreign governments. The final chapters of the book deal with the violent opposition of part of the island population to the newly established National Unity government.
