Book Acequia Culture

Download or read book Acequia Culture written by José A. Rivera and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2005-01-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicts between Hispanic farmers and developers made for compelling reading in The Milagro Beanfield War, the famous novel of life in a northern New Mexico village in which tradition triumphs over modernity. But as cities grow and industries expand, are acequias, or community irrigation ditches, a wise and efficient use of water in the arid Southwest? José Rivera presents the contemporary case for the value of acequias and the communities they nurture in the river valleys of southern Colorado and New Mexico. Recognizing that "water is the lifeblood of the community," Rivera delineates an acequia culture based on a reciprocal relationship between irrigation and community. The acequia experience grows out of a conservation ethic and a tradition of sharing that should be recognized and preserved in an age of increasing competition for scarce water resources. "A worthwhile contribution to the future management of water resources."--Professor Michael C. Meyer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Mexico cultural envoy Juan Estevan Arellano, to whom this work is dedicated, writes that querencia “is that which gives us a sense of place, that which anchors us to the land, that which makes us a unique people, for it implies a deeply rooted knowledge of place, and for that reason we respect it as our home.” This sentiment is echoed in the foreword by Rudolfo Anaya, in which he writes that “querencia is love of home, love of place.” This collection of both deeply personal reflections and carefully researched studies explores the New Mexico homeland through the experiences and perspectives of Chicanx and indigenous/Genízaro writers and scholars from across the state. The importance of querencia for each contributor is apparent in their work and their ongoing studies, which have roots in the culture, history, literature, and popular media of New Mexico. Be inspired and enlightened by these essays and discover the history and belonging that is querencia.

Book Naked Ladies on the Road

Download or read book Naked Ladies on the Road written by Mike Sutin and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How many roads have been memorialized in poetry? Can't think of one?" the author asks. "Let me suggest Santa Fe's Canyon Road, the Art and Soul of Santa Fe, ' he replies, "celebrated and legendary. But in the eyes of some, the City Different, as Santa Fe is called, a national treasure, the nation's highest capital, has become a high desert Disneyland, a small city in search of an identify, 'tourist-town U.S.A., ' a caricature of itself. That's just my opinion, of course. I think this book humanizes some wonders and some warts." The author, who lived "off the Road" for close to 20 years, uses poetry, often in formal form, to capture and capsulize the inconsistencies between the City of the Holy Faith and its sometimes indelicate "Road," while evoking and provoking emotions, the purpose of poetry. You will be pleased you joined us. Mike Sutin is a commercial lawyer in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and serves as pro-bono counsel to PEN New Mexico and the New Mexico Book Association. He is a member of both. His volunteer work for his street and neighborhood, and directorships on his neighborhood association and business and economic development organizations, afford insider sensitivity into the good, bad and ugly of Santa Fe's Canyon Road. His poems have appeared in local, regional, and national small presses, and anthologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How an Hispano community maintained its identity over four centuries Located in Albuquerque’s south valley, Atrisco is a vibrant community that predates the city, harking back to a land grant awarded in 1692. Joseph P. Sánchez explores the evolution of this parcel over the four centuries since the first Spanish settlers arrived. He tracks its transformation from an individual to a community grant, peeling away the layers of historical events that have made Atrisco the last piece of undeveloped real estate in a growing metropolitan area. Sánchez examines the creation of Atrisco as a frontier community during the Spanish and Mexican periods and shows how it maintained its identity and land ownership into the American era. He describes the historical processes of colonization, land tenures and transfers, and social and economic activity. He also assesses the transfer of the land grant to a private corporation and its subsequent fate, and considers Atrisco’s role in the future of Albuquerque. Today more than 30,000 New Mexicans are descended from the early settlers of Atrisco; and because few places in the United States have retained their Spanish and Mexican influences as have the New Mexican land grants, the history of Atrisco offers a unique perspective. Sánchez’s study preserves Atrisco’s origins as part of that area’s Hispano heritage, depicting people who learned to defend their culture against outside challenges and embedding local history in a larger regional saga.
