Book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition Morphosyntax and Semantics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition Morphosyntax and Semantics written by Tania Ionin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides innovative and comprehensive coverage of research on the second language acquisition (SLA) of morphosyntax, semantics, and the interface between the two. Organized by grammatical topic, the chapters are written by experts from formal and functional perspectives in the SLA of morphosyntax and semantics, providing in-depth yet accessible coverage of these areas. All chapters highlight the theoretical underpinnings of much work in SLA and their links to theoretical syntax and semantics; making comparisons to other populations, including child language acquirers, bilinguals, and heritage speakers (links to first language acquisition and bilingualism); dedicating a portion of each chapter to the research methods used to investigate the linguistic phenomenon in question (links to psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics); and, where relevant, including intervention studies on the phenomenon in question (links to applied linguistics). The volume will be indispensable to SLA researchers and students who work on any aspect of the SLA of morphosyntax or semantics. With its coverage of a variety of methodologies and comparisons to other populations (such as child language acquirers, early bilinguals, heritage speakers, and monolingual adults), the handbook is expected to also be of much interest to linguists who work in psycholinguistics, first language acquisition, and bilingualism.

Book The New Handbook of Second Language Acquisition

Download or read book The New Handbook of Second Language Acquisition written by William C. Ritchie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The New Handbook of Second Language Acquisition" is a thoroughly revised, re-organized, and re-worked edition of Ritchie and Bhatia's 1996 handbook. The work is divided into six parts, each devoted to a different aspect of the study of SLA. Part I includes a recent history of methods used in SLA research and an overview of currently used methods. Part II contains chapters on Universal Grammar, emergentism, variationism, information-processing, sociocultural, and cognitive-linguistic. Part III is devoted to overviews of SLA research on lexicon, morphosyntax, phonology, pragmatics, sentence processing, and the distinction between implicit and explicit knowledge. Part IV examines neuropsycholgy of SLA, another on child SLA, and the effects of age on second language acquisition and use. Part V is concerned with the contribution of the linguistic environment to SLA, including work on acquisition in different environments, through the Internet, and by deaf learners. Finally, Part VI treats social factors in SLA, including research on acquisition in contact circumstances, on social identity in SLA, on individual differences in SLA, and on the final state of SLA, bilingualism.

Book L2 Acquisition and Creole Genesis

Download or read book L2 Acquisition and Creole Genesis written by Claire Lefebvre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, second language (L2) acquisition researchers and creolists engage in a dialogue, focusing on processes at work in L2 acquisition and creole genesis. The volume opens with an overview of the relationship between L2 acquisition and pidgins/creoles (Siegel). The first group of papers addresses current language contact at a societal or an individual level (Smith; Terrill and Dunn; Bruhn de Garavito and Atoche; Liceras et al.; Muller). The second section focuses on processes characterizing various stages of L2 acquisition and creole genesis: relexification and transfer from the L1 and their role in the initial state (Sprouse; Schwartz; Kouwenberg; Aboh; Ionin). Chapters in the third section discuss processes involved in developing grammars, namely, reanalysis and restructuring (Sanchez; Brousseau and Nikiema; Steele and Brousseau). The final section concentrates on fossilization and the end state (Cornips and Hulk; Montrul; Lardiere). Between them, the chapters cover lexical, morphological, phonological, semantic and syntactic properties of interlanguage grammars and creole grammars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why our use of language is highly creative yet also constrained We use words and phrases creatively to express ourselves in ever-changing contexts, readily extending language constructions in new ways. Yet native speakers also implicitly know when a creative and easily interpretable formulation—such as “Explain me this” or “She considered to go”—doesn’t sound quite right. In this incisive book, Adele Goldberg explores how these creative but constrained language skills emerge from a combination of general cognitive mechanisms and experience. Shedding critical light on an enduring linguistic paradox, Goldberg demonstrates how words and abstract constructions are generalized and constrained in the same ways. When learning language, we record partially abstracted tokens of language within the high-dimensional conceptual space that is used when we speak or listen. Our implicit knowledge of language includes dimensions related to form, function, and social context. At the same time, abstract memory traces of linguistic usage-events cluster together on a subset of dimensions, with overlapping aspects strengthened via repetition. In this way, dynamic categories that correspond to words and abstract constructions emerge from partially overlapping memory traces, and as a result, distinct words and constructions compete with one another each time we select them to express our intended messages. While much of the research on this puzzle has favored semantic or functional explanations over statistical ones, Goldberg’s approach stresses that both the functional and statistical aspects of constructions emerge from the same learning mechanisms.

Book L2 Acquisition of English Unaccusative Verbs by Native Speakers of Korean

Download or read book L2 Acquisition of English Unaccusative Verbs by Native Speakers of Korean written by Kyae-Sung Park and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experimental study explores the learnability problems involved in the acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners using a production and two grammaticality judgment tasks. The results showed that learners tended to overpassivize unaccusatives. Due to the poor performance on resultatives and pseudopassives with unergatives, it was found that very few could make the unergative/unaccusative distinction. On the other hand, learners correctly performed on those with unaccusatives, which suggests that they had knowledge of syntactic properties of unaccusativity at D-Structure. Overpassivization errors indicate that L1 transfer occurred at the morphological level, and that learners had an innate knowledge in mapping semantic roles onto syntactic functions. That is, they relied on the canonical mapping, agent to subject and theme to object. In conclusion, although L1 plays a crucial role in the L2 acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by native speakers of Korean, a UG-related mechanism is also involved.

Book Acquisition of Korean Obstruents by English speaking Second Language Learners of Korean and the Role of Pronunciation Instruction

Download or read book Acquisition of Korean Obstruents by English speaking Second Language Learners of Korean and the Role of Pronunciation Instruction written by Eun Sun Tark and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated how Korean second language (L2) learners whose first language (L1) is English acquire Korean obstruents, including stops, fricatives, and affricates, in word-initial position. It also explored how the similarities and differences between the L1 and the L2 affect L2 acquisition as well as the order of the acquisition of Korean obstruents by L2 learners. In addition, this study examined whether it is effective to teach the pronunciation of Korean obstruents to L2 learners of Korean through meaning oriented, form-focused instruction with corrective feedback. Ten English-speaking L2 Korean learners and ten Korean native speakers participated in the study. Korean L2 learners were classified into two groups: experimental and control group. Both groups took pre and post assessments (production and perception experiments). The experimental group participated in pronunciation training sessions (eight sessions/10 hours) and interviews in addition to the assessments. Acoustic analyses, statistical analyses, native speakers' judgmental analyses, and theme-based analyses were conducted to examine the L2 learners' acquisition of Korean obstruents (production and perception) and the role of pronunciation instruction. In terms of L2 acquisition, it was found that L2 learners perceived and produced aspirated stops/affricates better than tense and lenis ones, and they had the most difficulties with perceiving and producing lenis stops/affricates. Additionally, L2 learners perceived and produced tense fricatives better than lenis ones. In the case of the effectiveness of the pronunciation training, it was found that the L2 experimental group learners showed improvements in all stops, affricates, and fricatives in the post-test (perception and production) compared to the control group.

Book Morpho Syntactic Patterns in Spoken Korean English

Download or read book Morpho Syntactic Patterns in Spoken Korean English written by Sofia Rüdiger and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morpho-Syntactic Patterns in Spoken Korean English presents fundamental research on the use of English by South Korean speakers. Despite the extraordinary and vibrant status of the English language in South Korean society (demonstrated, for example, by the notion of English Fever), research on the forms of English in the South Korean context has been sadly neglected in the study of World Englishes. This monograph is the first to provide a rich and contextualized description of the Korean English morpho-syntactic repertoire. It draws on the specifically compiled Spoken Korean English (SPOKE) corpus to shed light on Korean uses of plural marking, articles, pronouns, prepositions, and verbs in spoken English, and demonstrates that English is indeed the language of those who use it. This volume will be highly relevant for researchers interested in Expanding Circle Englishes, Asian Englishes, spoken language corpora, and morpho-syntactic variation.

Book Second Language Sentence Processing

Download or read book Second Language Sentence Processing written by Alan Juffs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This addition to the Cognitive Science and Second Language Acquisition series presents a comprehensive review of the latest research findings on sentence processing in second language acquisition. The book begins with a broad overview of the core issues of second language sentence processing research and then narrows its focus by dedicating individual chapters to each of these key areas. While a number of publications have discussed research findings on knowledge of formal syntactic principles as part of theories of second language acquisition, there are fewer resources dedicated to the role of second language sentence processing in this context. This volume will act as the first full-length literature review of the field on the market.
