Book Introduction to Korean as a Second Language

Download or read book Introduction to Korean as a Second Language written by EunHee Lee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Korean as a Second Language introduces the basic linguistic make-up of Korean and provides basic knowledge of second language acquisition and up-to-date research on how Korean is learned by adult second language learners (L2 Korean learners). The book synthesizes the existing research and suggests future directions for this relatively new but rapidly growing field. The book covers topics such as the Korean sound system, word and phrase structures of Korean, and meaning in Korean, making it a great resource for those who want to deepen their understanding of the Korean language. This textbook is ideal for use in Korean linguistics courses, and teaching and learning Korean as a foreign language courses. The book would also be good supplementary material for Korean language classes.

Book L2 Acquisition of English Unaccusative Verbs by Native Speakers of Korean

Download or read book L2 Acquisition of English Unaccusative Verbs by Native Speakers of Korean written by Kyae-Sung Park and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experimental study explores the learnability problems involved in the acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by Korean L2 learners using a production and two grammaticality judgment tasks. The results showed that learners tended to overpassivize unaccusatives. Due to the poor performance on resultatives and pseudopassives with unergatives, it was found that very few could make the unergative/unaccusative distinction. On the other hand, learners correctly performed on those with unaccusatives, which suggests that they had knowledge of syntactic properties of unaccusativity at D-Structure. Overpassivization errors indicate that L1 transfer occurred at the morphological level, and that learners had an innate knowledge in mapping semantic roles onto syntactic functions. That is, they relied on the canonical mapping, agent to subject and theme to object. In conclusion, although L1 plays a crucial role in the L2 acquisition of English unaccusative verbs by native speakers of Korean, a UG-related mechanism is also involved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic attempt to address the issue of fossilization in relation to a fundamental question in second language acquisition research, which is: why are learners, adults in particular, unable to develop the level of competence they have aspired to in spite of continuous and sustained exposure to the target language, adequate motivation to learn, and sufficient opportunity to practice?

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition written by Julia Herschensohn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is language and how can we investigate its acquisition by children or adults? What perspectives exist from which to view acquisition? What internal constraints and external factors shape acquisition? What are the properties of interlanguage systems? This comprehensive 31-chapter handbook is an authoritative survey of second language acquisition (SLA). Its multi-perspective synopsis on recent developments in SLA research provides significant contributions by established experts and widely recognized younger talent. It covers cutting edge and emerging areas of enquiry not treated elsewhere in a single handbook, including third language acquisition, electronic communication, incomplete first language acquisition, alphabetic literacy and SLA, affect and the brain, discourse and identity. Written to be accessible to newcomers as well as experienced scholars of SLA, the Handbook is organised into six thematic sections, each with an editor-written introduction.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition Morphosyntax and Semantics

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition Morphosyntax and Semantics written by Tania Ionin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides innovative and comprehensive coverage of research on the second language acquisition (SLA) of morphosyntax, semantics, and the interface between the two. Organized by grammatical topic, the chapters are written by experts from formal and functional perspectives in the SLA of morphosyntax and semantics, providing in-depth yet accessible coverage of these areas. All chapters highlight the theoretical underpinnings of much work in SLA and their links to theoretical syntax and semantics; making comparisons to other populations, including child language acquirers, bilinguals, and heritage speakers (links to first language acquisition and bilingualism); dedicating a portion of each chapter to the research methods used to investigate the linguistic phenomenon in question (links to psycholinguistics and experimental linguistics); and, where relevant, including intervention studies on the phenomenon in question (links to applied linguistics). The volume will be indispensable to SLA researchers and students who work on any aspect of the SLA of morphosyntax or semantics. With its coverage of a variety of methodologies and comparisons to other populations (such as child language acquirers, early bilinguals, heritage speakers, and monolingual adults), the handbook is expected to also be of much interest to linguists who work in psycholinguistics, first language acquisition, and bilingualism.

Book Second Language Acquisition of Turkish

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition of Turkish written by Ayşe Gürel and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the findings of current studies on the second language (L2) acquisition of Turkish, an Altaic language with more than 140 million native speakers around the world. There is now a growing interest in learning and teaching Turkish as an L2, both in and outside Turkey. Coordinated efforts to produce theoretical and empirical work on the acquisition and teaching of L2 Turkish are therefore an urgent need. The compilation in this volume offers eleven L2 studies that explore the representation and/or processing of various linguistic properties in different domains of grammar (phonology, morpho-syntax, pragmatics) and their interfaces. All studies involve adult L2 Turkish learners with various first-language backgrounds at different proficiency levels. With extensive discussions on theoretical and pedagogical issues, this title will appeal to an international readership that includes L2 Turkish researchers, materials designers, and teachers.
