Download or read book Quantum Physics of Light and Matter written by Luca Salasnich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction to the field quantization (second quantization) of light and matter with applications to atomic physics. The first chapter briefly reviews the origins of special relativity and quantum mechanics and the basic notions of quantum information theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the second quantization of the electromagnetic field, while the third chapter shows the consequences of the light field quantization in the description of electromagnetic transitions. In the fourth chapter it is analyzed the spin of the electron, and in particular its derivation from the Dirac equation, while the fifth chapter investigates the effects of external electric and magnetic fields on the atomic spectra (Stark and Zeeman effects). The sixth chapter describes the properties of systems composed by many interacting identical particles by introducing the Hartree-Fock variational method, the density functional theory and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Finally, in the seventh chapter it is explained the second quantization of the non-relativistic matter field, i.e. the Schrodinger field, which gives a powerful tool for the investigation of many-body problems and also atomic quantum optics. At the end of each chapter there are several solved problems which can help the students to put into practice the things they learned.

Download or read book Matter Particled written by Yuval Ne'eman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 895 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume contains a selection of more than 80 of Yuval Ne''eman''s papers, which represent his huge contribution to a large number of aspects of theoretical physics. The works span more than four decades, from unitary symmetry and quarks to questions of complexity in biological systems and evolution of scientific theories. In keeping with the major role Ne''eman has played in theoretical physics over the last 40 years, a collaboration of very distinguished scientists enthusiastically took part in this volume. Their commentary supplies a clear framework and background for appreciating Yuval Ne''eman''s significant discoveries and pioneering contributions. Contents: (Authors of Commentaries in Parentheses): SU(3), Quarks and Symmetry Breaking (Y Verbin); Algebraic Theory of Particle Physics and Spectrum Generating Algebras (N Cabibbo); Supersymmetry and Supergravity (R Kerner); Geometrization of Physics (T Regge); SU(2/1) Super-Unification of the Standard Model and Non Commutative Geometry (J Thierry-Mieg); Spinor Representations of GL ( N, P ) and Chromogravity (I Kirsch); Metric-Affine Gravity (F W Hehl); Strings, Branes and Other Extendons (Dj aijaiki); Various Topics in Astrophysics (J Bahcall); Foundations of Physics (A Botero); Philosophy and Sociology of Science: Evolution and History (J Rosen). Download or read book Thermodynamics And Equations Of State For Matter From Ideal Gas To Quark gluon Plasma written by Vladimr E Fortov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph presents a comparative analysis of different thermodynamic models of the equations of state. The basic ideological premises of the theoretical methods and the experiment are considered. The principal attention is on the description of states that are of greatest interest for the physics of high energy concentrations which are either already attained or can be reached in the near future in controlled terrestrial conditions, or are realized in astrophysical objects at different stages of their evolution. Ultra-extreme astrophysical and nuclear-physical applications are also analyzed where the thermodynamics of matter is affected substantially by relativism, high-power gravitational and magnetic fields, thermal radiation, transformation of nuclear particles, nucleon neutronization, and quark deconfinement. The book is intended for a wide range of specialists engaged in the study of the equations of state of matter and high energy density physics, as well as for senior students and postgraduates.
Download or read book The Shape of Things written by Shawn W. Walker and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many things around us have properties that depend on their shape?for example, the drag characteristics of a rigid body in a flow. This self-contained overview of differential geometry explains how to differentiate a function (in the calculus sense) with respect to a ?shape variable.? This approach, which is useful for understanding mathematical models containing geometric partial differential equations (PDEs), allows readers to obtain formulas for geometric quantities (such as curvature) that are clearer than those usually offered in differential geometry texts. Readers will learn how to compute sensitivities with respect to geometry by developing basic calculus tools on surfaces and combining them with the calculus of variations. Several applications that utilize shape derivatives and many illustrations that help build intuition are included.
