L'existence d'une carence lexicale chez les adolescents sourds profonds est largement reconnue par la littérature. (Bishop & Gregory, 1986; Gallaway et al, 1990; Gregory & Mogford, 1981 ;Hughes, 1983 ; Meadow, 1980 ; Myklebust, 1960 ; White & White, 1987, cités par Lepot-Froment, 1996). En revanche, peu d'études s'attachent aux aspects qualitatifs du vocabulaire de l'enfant sourd profond. Dans une perspective de recherche, nous avons étudié l'apport indépendant et combiné de l'implant cochléaire et du code LPC sur l'étendue lexicale de l'adolescent sourd profond. Nous avons comparé les performances lexicales d'adolescents sourds profonds en fonction des aides au langage oral dont ils bénéficient: l'implant cochléaire (précoce, tardif ou absent) et l'exposition au code LPC (précoce, tardive ou absente) à celles d'adolescents entendants de même âge chronologique. Diverses épreuves ayant pour but de tester leurs habiletés lexicales au niveau de l'accès au stock lexical : dénomination, fluence phonologique et sémantique; et au niveau du stock lui-même sur le versant quantitatif : dénomination, désignation; et sur le versant qualitatif: organisation du lexique et usage du lexique dans la vie quotidienne, leur ont été administrées. Les résultats indiquent que ce sont les adolescents sourds profonds implantés précocement et exposés de façon précoce au code LPC qui obtiennent les meilleurs scores aux différentes épreuves proposées. Il apparaît que l'implantation précoce permet une perception auditive de qualité favorisant le développement du langage oral et du vocabulaire et que le code LPC constitue un apport de qualité dans la saisie visuelle du message oral. L'utilisation conjointe de l'implant cochléaire et du code LPC offre à l'enfant sourd profond un message auditif et visuel de qualité favorisant l'accès au langage oral et lui permettant de développer des habiletés lexicales normales.

But to the contrary, Slavery and the Culture of Taste demonstrates that these two areas of modernity were surprisingly entwined. Ranging across Britain, the antebellum South, and the West Indies, and examining vast archives, including portraits, period paintings, personal narratives, and diaries, Simon Gikandi illustrates how the violence and ugliness of enslavement actually shaped theories of taste, notions of beauty, and practices of high culture, and how slavery's impurity informed and haunted the rarified customs of the time. Gikandi focuses on the ways that the enslavement of Africans and the profits derived from this exploitation enabled the moment of taste in European--mainly British--life, leading to a transformation of bourgeois ideas regarding freedom and selfhood.
