Book excerpt: This monograph studies the professionalization of History of religions as an academic discipline in late 19th and early 20th century France and Europe. Its common thread is the work of the French Modernist priest and later Professor of History of religions at the Collège de France, Alfred Loisy (1857-1940), who participated in many of the most topical debates among French and international historians of religions. Unlike his well-studied Modernist theology, Loisy’s writings on comparative religion, and his rich interactions with famous scholars like F. Cumont, M. Mauss, or J.G. Frazer, remain largely unknown. This monograph is the first to paint a comprehensive picture of his career as a historian of religions before and after his excommunication in 1908. Through a contextual analysis of publications by Loisy and contemporaries, and a large corpus of private correspondence, it illuminates the scientification of the discipline between 1890-1920, and its deep entanglement with religion, politics, and society. Particular attention is also given to the role of national and transnational scholarly networks, and the way they controlled the theoretical and institutional frameworks for studying the history of religions.

Une exposition de manuscrits anciens et d'imprimés (novembre 2009 - avril 2010), accompagnée d'un ouvrage d'art réunissant près une centaine chercheurs (Éditions du Cerf, épuisé) ouvraient une perspective originale sur les relations entre les cultures juives, chrétiennes et musulmanes dans l'espace euro-méditerranéen. Par-delà le donné révélé et les corpus sacrés, inconciliables, et malgré les conflits incessants, nos trois cultures ont partagé les héritages philosophiques gréco-latins, qu'ils se sont transmis et dont ils ont poursuivi le développement dans le cadre théologique qui leur était propre. Cette communauté d'héritage impliquait une communauté de références textuelles, de concepts, et de finalité : produire un discours théologique rationnel. Une démarche souvent combattue au sein de chacune de nos traditions, mais à laquelle chacune souscrivit à des degrés divers et selon des modalités qui lui étaient propres. La Translatio studiorum et la rationalisation du donné révélé devinrent très tôt dans l'histoire de chacune des trois religions, un enjeu majeur ; et par le jeu complexe des transmissions et des réappropriations, la philosophie gréco-latine a bien été - et demeure - un patrimoine commun, une racine commune. L'Institut pour la Recherche et le Dialogue Interreligieux de l'université de Fribourg-Suisse (dir. Prof. Mariano Delgado), partenaire du projet Orient-Occident, a souhaité proposer au public un colloque scientifique international offrant la possibilité d'explorer cette problématique de manière plus approfondie, en partenariat avec le Royal Institute for Inter Faith Studies (Amman). Fidèle à l'esprit du projet dans lequel il s'intégrait, ce colloque ne proposait aucune perspective transversale mais juxtaposait les points de vue, dédiés chacun à l'étude d'un aspect d'une tradition. Mais il offrait également une large place à la discussion, ce dont la présente publication témoigne en restituant le débat qui vint clore les quatre journées d'étude.

This groundbreaking book refutes the common belief that the ancient Greeks and Romans harbored "ethnic and cultural," but not racial, prejudice. It does so by comprehensively tracing the intellectual origins of racism back to classical antiquity. Benjamin Isaac's systematic analysis of ancient social prejudices and stereotypes reveals that some of those represent prototypes of racism--or proto-racism--which in turn inspired the early modern authors who developed the more familiar racist ideas.
