Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark in the study of early modern Europe, this two-volume collection makes available for the first time a selection of the most important texts from court and civic festival books. Festival entertainments were presented to mark such occasions as royal and ducal entries to capital cities, dynastic marriages, the birth and christening of heirs, religious feasts and royal and ducal funerals. Europa Triumphans represents the chronological and trans-European range of the court and civic festival. These festivals are considered not simply as texts, but as events, and are introduced by groups of scholars, each with a specialist knowledge of the political, social and cultural significance of the festival and of the iconography, spectacle, music, dance, voice and gesture in which they were expressed. To demonstrate the geographic spread and political significance of festivals, and to illustrate the range of aesthetic languages they deploy, the festivals included in these two volumes are grouped in the following sections: Henri III; Genoa; Poland-Lithuania; The Netherlands; The Protestant Union; La Rochelle; Scandinavia; and The New World. These texts provide many valuable insights into the variety of political systems and historical circumstances that formed them. Beautifully produced with 148 black-and-white and 23 colour illustrations, Europa Triumphans represents an invaluable reference source for the study of early modern Europe. It presents texts both in transcription and translated into English, and is supplemented with introductory essays and commentaries. Europa Triumphans is co-published by Ashgate and the Modern Humanities Research Association, in conjunction with the AHRB Centre for the Study of the Renaissance at the University of Warwick, UK.

Book Music in Renaissance Lyons

Download or read book Music in Renaissance Lyons written by Frank Dobbins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of musical life in Lyons at a time when the city was a leading European commercial and cultural center, this book surveys the vast repertoire of music copied and published, relating it to social, political, economic, intellectual, and religious life. The great wealth of the city's literature is scrutinized for references which provide testimony to the musical attitudes and activities of resident or visiting patrons and amateurs. Information on the composers who lived or worked in Lyons is gleaned from contemporary records, dedications, and correspondence as well as from their musical output. The masses, motets, chansons, madrigals, psalms, and instrumental music for church, state, and citizen are reviewed, reflecting changes in form and style that occur in response to the requirements of visiting courts of an increasingly demanding bourgeoisie, led by affluent Italian patricians and eventually a more intrusive Protestant community.

Book Stravinsky in Context

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham Griffiths
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-11-10
  • ISBN : 9781108434720
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Stravinsky in Context written by Graham Griffiths and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stravinsky in Context offers an alternative to chronological biography. Thirty-five short, specially commissioned essays explore the eventful life-tapestry from which Stravinsky's compositions emerged. The opening chapters draw on new research into the composer's childhood in St. Petersburg. Stravinsky's early, often traumatic upbringing is examined in depth, particularly in the context of his brother Roman's death, and religious sensibilities within the family. Further essays consider Stravinsky's years in exile at the centre of dynamic and ever-evolving cultural environments, the composer constantly refining his idiom and re-defining his aesthetics against a backdrop of world events and personal tragedy. The closing chapters review new material regarding Stravinsky's complicated relationship with the Soviet Union, whilst also anticipating his legacy from the varied perspectives of publishing, research and even - in the iconic example of The Rite of Spring - space exploration. The book includes previously unpublished images of the composer and his family.
