Book The Maltese Dialogue

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kiril Petkov
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-06-27
  • ISBN : 1000084760
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book The Maltese Dialogue written by Kiril Petkov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maltese Dialogue is the first comprehensive treatise of the history, institutions, and political projects of the Order of the Knights of Saint John of the Hospital, commonly known as the Maltese Order. It was written during the tenure of Grand Master Fra Claude de la Sengle (1553-1557), although the conversation between Commendator Fra Giuseppe Cambiano, one of the Order’s most prominent sixteenth-century functionaries, and three Venetian patricians, on which the Dialogue is based, may have taken place even earlier. The contents of the Dialogue fall in three categories: the opening section is the first detailed precis of the Hospitallers’ history; then comes the bulk of the treatise, presenting a concise summary of the Order’s constitution, institutional and legal organization, election procedures, recruitment of knights, rituals of instalment, and financial matters. The remaining section is a polemical expose arguing for the benefit of the Order’s abandoning of Malta and the recapturing of Tripoli. The Dialogue offers a hitherto unexplored, first-rate source on the Maltese knights’ self-projection as a unique transnational institution of early modern Europe in the era of nation-states, on the power plays of the major political agents in the sixteenth-century Mediterranean, and on Western Christian strategies of engagement of Ottoman imperialism at the peak of its expansion in the region. Those interested in the history of Christian-Muslim interaction, the evolution of crusading practices in the era of early modern predatory warfare, and the construction of historical memory on the case study of the longest-lasting, and still extant, knightly order, will find it to be a highly intriguing and informative reading.

Book Eight Thousand Years of Maltese Maritime History

Download or read book Eight Thousand Years of Maltese Maritime History written by Ayse Devrim Atauz and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, Malta has always been considered a site of strategic importance. From the arrival of the Phoenicians through rule under Carthage, Rome, Sicilian Arabs, Normans, and Genovese, to the Order of St. John ("Knights of Malta"), the advent of the Napoleonic Wars, and even World Wars I and II, the Maltese islands have served as re-provisioning stations, military bases, and refuges for pirates and privateers. Building on her systematic underwater archaeological survey of the Maltese archipelago, Ayse Atauz presents a sweeping, groundbreaking, interdisciplinary approach to maritime history in the Mediterranean. Offering a general overview of essential facts, including geographical and oceanographic factors that would have affected the navigation of historic ships, major relevant historical texts and documents, the logistical possibilities of ancient ship design, a detailed study of sea currents and wind patterns, and especially the archaeological remains (or scarcity thereof) around the Maltese maritime perimeter, she builds a convincing argument that Malta mattered far less in maritime history than has been previously asserted. Atauz's conclusions are of great importance to the history of Malta and of the Mediterranean in general, and her archaeological discoveries about ships are a major contribution to the history of shipbuilding and naval architecture.

Book Caelius Secundus Curio

Download or read book Caelius Secundus Curio written by Celio Secondo Curione and published by Iter Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The successful five-month defense of the island of Malta in 1565 against an Ottoman armada by the Knights of St. John was a remarkable achievement, celebrated across Christendom by Catholic and Protestant alike - once they believed the news. In Latin, Italian, French, German, and finally, English, accounts of the siege proliferated - over seventy publications within five years. Thomas Mainwaringe's account of the siege in English is a translation from Latin and among the earliest accounts of the siege to appear in English (1579). In lively, clear, and sometimes moving prose, Mainwaringe's story celebrates the bravery and 'generalship of the Knights of St. John while deploring the disunity within Christendom that so nearly led to the island's defeat and could yet spell disaster elsewhere."--Jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Union in Separation presents a series of case studies on diasporic groups in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. It explores how Armenian, Byzantine/Greek, Florentine, Genoese, Hospitaller, Jewish, Mamluk, and Venetian communities characterized by diasporic identities and inserted into local contexts navigated religious and socio-ethnic boundaries as well as other categories of difference. The volume draws on a wide range of historical and social-scientific methods and offers new perspectives on the arbitration of difference in the wider eastern Mediterranean from Tana to Cairo and Marseille to Isfahan prior to the emergence of nation states. It provides not only an analytical toolbox for historical diaspora studies but also reveals how, under the looming threat of crusade and within the daily routines of trade, diasporic groups and their hosts negotiated modes of coexistence that oscillated between cooperation and conflict, integration and rejection, union and separation.
