This book explores how continued emigration and increasing immigration is transforming contemporary Moroccan society, with a particular emphasis on the way the Moroccan state is dealing with shifting migratory realities. Mais, désormais, les dirigeants d'entreprises ne sont plus soumis uniquement à l'impôt sur le revenu. La création de l'impôt sur la fortune (ISF) pose la question complexe de la définition des biens professionnels exemptés appartenant aux dirigeants d'entreprises. Cette exemption est entendue d'une manière plus restrictive que celle des biens affectés à l'activité de l'entreprise. Enfin, l'optimisation du rendement fiscal et la lutte contre l'évasion fiscale ont entraîné le développement inquiétant des solidarités fiscales et pénales pesant sur les dirigeants d'entreprises. Ainsi, l'administration n'hésite pas à mettre en jeu leur responsabilité solidaire devant le juge de l'impôt ou le juge pénal. Grâce à une analyse de la jurisprudence et de la doctrine administrative, des vues inédites se dégagent et des rapprochements opportuns sont opérés. Les deux auteurs qui connaissent bien la fiscalité, à la fois comme professeurs et comme consultants, présentent une synthèse de la matière. Migrants from the southern province of Azuay shuttle back and forth to New York City, mostly as undocumented laborers. In contrast, an indigenous group of Quichua-speakers from the northern canton of Otavalo travel the world as handicraft merchants and musicians playing Andean music. In one village, Kyle found that Otavalans were migrating to 23 different countries and returning within a year. Transnational Peasants provides an intriguing historical and sociological exploration of a contemporary migration mystery.

Known as weavers and merchants since pre-Inca times, Otavalos today live and work in over thirty countries on six continents, while hosting more than 145,000 tourists annually at their Saturday market. In this ethnography of the globalization process, Lynn A. Meisch looks at how participation in the global economy has affected Otavalo identity and culture since the 1970s. Drawing on nearly thirty years of fieldwork, she covers many areas of Otavalo life, including the development of weaving and music as business enterprises, the increase in tourism to Otavalo, the diaspora of Otavalo merchants and musicians around the world, changing social relations at home, the growth of indigenous political power, and current debates within the Otavalo community over preserving cultural identity in the face of globalization and transnational migration. Refuting the belief that contact with the wider world inevitably destroys indigenous societies, Meisch demonstrates that Otavalos are preserving many features of their culture while adopting and adapting modern technologies and practices they find useful.
