Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piero Bigongiari (1914-1997) was among the most prolific and consistent Italian poets of the last century. He was central to the ‘third generation’ of ermetismo – the movement that voiced the mysterious, the hidden and the abstract. Bigongiari was a poet of origins, exploring the grounding of cultures in landscape and myth, the depths and limitations of home, and the symbols and narratives that sustain an individual’s bond to places. His poetic technique was based on the elaboration of motifs, tracing evolving ideas in a web of verbal themes and variations. Bigongiari’s was a voice of memory, dreams and the surprises of the psyche, speaking beyond politics or ideology to express an Italian sense of existing in modern times. Yet his work is unfamiliar to most Italians and English-language readers. This book – the first English in-depth study of the poet – addresses the roots of Bigongiari’s writing and moral ideas, which took form during the Second World War. After the fall of fascism and the destruction of much of his beloved Florence, Bigongiari abandoned the mystical style of his first collection, seeking greater emotional immediacy and a more incisive view into Italy’s mental life. His fixation on origins arose from a belief that the fascist generations had been untrue to themselves; his technique of elaboration began as an attempt to sustain fragile creativity from one poem to the next. The destructive fire of war became the crucible in which he reinvented his art. Drawing on the full range of Bigongiari’s wartime writing, from his major poetry collection Rogo [Pyre or Blaze] to essays, diaries and new archival discoveries, this book is a portrait of an author overcoming crisis and confronting the failures of his time head-on. A Voice in the Fire will appeal to fans of Italian literature and poetry, and particularly fans and students of Bigongiari’s work. It will also be enjoyed by anyone interested in WWII writing, European war poetry or European history.

Book excerpt: A collection of essays from the visionary storyteller Gianni Rodari about fairy tales and folk tales and their great advantages in teaching creative storytelling. "Rodari grasped children's need to play with life's rules by using the grammar of their own imaginations. They must be encouraged to question, challenge, destroy, mock, eliminate, generate, and reproduce their own language and meanings through stories that will enable them to narrate their own lives." --Jack Zipes "I hope this small book," writes renowned children's author Gianni Rodari, "can be useful for all those people who believe it is necessary for the imagination to have a place in education; for all those who trust in the creativity of children; and for all those who know the liberating value of the word." Full of ideas, glosses on fairytales, stories, and wide-ranging activities, including the fantastic binomial, this book changed how creative arts were taught in Italian schools. Translated into English by acclaimed children's historian Jack Zipes and illustrated for the first time ever by Matthew Forsythe, this edition of The Grammar of Fantasy is one to live with and return to for its humor, intelligence, and truly deep understanding of children. A groundbreaking pedagogical work that is also a handbook for writers of all ages and kinds, The Grammar of Fantasy gives each of us a playful, practical path to finding our own voice through the power of storytelling. Gianni Rodari (1920-1980) grew up in Northern Italy and wrote hundreds of stories, poems, and songs for children. In 1960, he collaborated with the Education Cooperation Movement to develop exercises to encourage children's creative and critical thinking abilities. Jack Zipes is a renowned children's historian and folklorist who has written, translated, and edited dozens of books on fairytales. He is a professor at the University of Minnesota. Matthew Forsythe lives in Montreal where he draws and paints for picture books, comics, and animations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turning point occurred with Heidegger's hermeneutics of facticity saw a great flourishing in Gadamer's works. Hermeneutics becomes the philosophy that undermines the scientific parameters of modernity and it looks for an extra-metodica way that leads up to truth through the rediscovery of the cultural values of our European tradition that is art, taste and culture but above all, rhetoric, practical philosophy, and that particular form of judgment called phronesis, which expresses itself in the understanding of the other and in the dialogue. This sensitivity towards the values of tradition, which represents the authentic authority since it's the consent on which the civil society is based, cannot for Gadamer withdraw into itself but it must open itself to the intercultural dialogue as an ethical answer to the challenge of globalization. PLEASE NOTE: Only three of the book's twenty-two essays are in English language text. (Series: The Dialogue - Yearbook of Philosophical Hermeneutics - Vol. 5)
Download or read book Remote Vision written by Alessandro De Francesco and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Vision contains an English-Italian bilingual version of the most significant works in poetry and conceptual writing produced so far by Alessandro De Francesco. It is both a self-standing, coherent book and the most exhaustive collection of his poetry ever published in any language; containing a new version of the 2008 book Objects Displaced, the complete 2010 book Redefinition, the composite and still partially unpublished Cistern, the prose Foreign Body in Ascending Motion and the very recent work Inhabited Spaces. All the sections were rearranged for this publication by the author who decided that each section contain the complete English text followed by the complete Italian version, avoiding a face to face translation in order not to interrupt the flow of the reading. The whole book was beautifully translated by poets and Brown University alumni Belle Cushing and Dusty Neu, under the coordination of the acclaimed poet and Comparative Literature scholar Forrest Gander. This book condenses and proposes under a new light all the conceptual and emotional intensity of Alessandro De Francesco's poetry.
