Download or read book Daughters Of 1968 written by Lisa Greenwald and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daughters of 1968 is the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage. The May 1968 events--with their embrace of radical individualism and antiauthoritarianism--triggered a break from the past, and the women's movement split into two strands. One became universalist and intensely activist, the other particularist and less activist, distancing itself from contemporary feminism. This theoretical debate manifested itself in battles between women and organizations on the streets and in the courts. The history of French feminism is the history of women's claims to individualism and citizenship that had been granted their male counterparts, at least in principle, in 1789. Yet French women have more often donned the mantle of particularism, advancing their contributions as mothers to prove their worth as citizens, than they have thrown it off, claiming absolute equality. The few exceptions, such as Simone de Beauvoir or the 1970s activists, illustrate the diversity and tensions within French feminism, as France moved from a corporatist and tradition-minded country to one marked by individualism and modernity.
Download or read book Women s Emancipation and Civil Society Organisations written by Schwabenland, Christina and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence Women are at the heart of civil society organisations. Through them they have achieved many successes, challenged oppressive practices at a local and global level and have developed outstanding entrepreneurial activities. Yet Civil Service Organisation (CSO) research tends to ignore considerations of gender and the rich history of activist feminist organisations is rarely examined. This collection examines the nexus between the emancipation of women, and their role(s) in these organisations. Featuring contrasting studies from a wide range of contributors from different parts of the world, it covers emerging issues such as the role of social media in organising, the significance of religion in many cultural contexts, activism in Eastern Europe and the impact of environmental degradation on women’s lives. Asking whether involvement in CSOs offers a potential source of emancipation for women or maintains the status quo, this anthology will also have an impact on policy and practice in relation to equal opportunities.
Download or read book L autorit religieuse et ses limites en terres d islam written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Ont contribué/contributors include: Elisabetta Borromeo, Xavier Bougarel, Rachida Chih, Nathalie Clayer, Jérôme Cler, Benoît Fliche, Anna Neubauer, Alexandre Papas, Nicolas Vatin, Gilles Veinstein. Reconsidering the question of religious authority, L'autorité religieuse et ses limites en terres d'islam offers various case studies located in Central Asia, throughout the Ottoman Empire, in the Balkans and in Turkey. The present volume discusses the complex relationships between political power and religious authorities, such as Sufi shaykhs, ulamas, sheikh ul-islâm, hegumens, and the latin clergy in the premodern period. The 20th and 21th centuries are analysed from the perspective of the transformation of religious authority - certainly fragmented but vigorous - among the Bosnian Muslim Reformists, the Albanian Bektashis, the Alevis of Anatolia, and in female Sufism in Istanbul. It appears that religious authority is not limited to traditional authorities and is continuously confronted with limits, whether theological, political, social or institutional.

Eastern Perspectives on Women’s Roles and Advancement in Business presents the real-life stories of Eastern women in business, giving particular focus to how these women overcame challenges and broke the glass ceiling. This text explores the problems and challenges, experiences, and strategies of overcoming gender discrimination and inequality. Download or read book In the Name of Women s Rights written by Sara R. Farris and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sara R. Farris examines the demands for women's rights from an unlikely collection of right-wing nationalist political parties, neoliberals, and some feminist theorists and policy makers. Focusing on contemporary France, Italy, and the Netherlands, Farris labels this exploitation and co-optation of feminist themes by anti-Islam and xenophobic campaigns as “femonationalism.” She shows that by characterizing Muslim males as dangerous to western societies and as oppressors of women, and by emphasizing the need to rescue Muslim and migrant women, these groups use gender equality to justify their racist rhetoric and policies. This practice also serves an economic function. Farris analyzes how neoliberal civic integration policies and feminist groups funnel Muslim and non-western migrant women into the segregating domestic and caregiving industries, all the while claiming to promote their emancipation. In the Name of Women's Rights documents the links between racism, feminism, and the ways in which non-western women are instrumentalized for a variety of political and economic purposes.
Download or read book The Gendering of Inequalities written by Jane Jenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was first published in 2000: This work is founded on the premise that many analyses of economic restructuring and of gender relations fail to recognize two things. First, the situation facing women is different from that of the 1960s when the conceptual apparatuses for analyzing "women and work" were created. Labour markets are dominated by flexible, non-standard work, precarious contractual relations and income disparities. Therefore, it is difficult to structure political claims or analysis around the notion that there is a single labour market, that the primary problem is discrimination or inappropriate training, and that political strategies should focus on discrimination and non-traditional employment. Rather, new challenges require new solutions. The second point of departure is that is is impossible to understand either contemporary labour markets, or the roots of employment and other public policies without locating them vis a vis patterns of gender inequalities generated by and in these labour markets. The labour force has been feminized to such an extent that new, and often unequal gender relations are crucial to their very functioning.
Download or read book Women in Global Migration 1945 2000 written by Eleanore O. Hofstetter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-03-30 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With large numbers of people migrating to other countries after World War II, a substantial amount of scholarship has focused on the status, problems, and successes of women immigrants since 1945. The first comprehensive compilation of the international literature on these women, this bibliography--with over 5,100 entries--reveals the breadth of scholarship on feminist immigration issues. Focusing particularly on sources from North America and Western Europe, where most immigrant women settled, the book includes feminist analyses, bibliographies, demographic studies, economic comparisons, educational research, health and medical reports, legal discussions, biographies and autobiographies, psychological case studies, religious reports, sociological investigations, and publications dealing with general aspects of female immigration. The book covers such legal issues as citizenship, international conventions on contract workers, the traffic in women, and services and government benefits to immigrants. Medical entries include such topics as female genital mutilation, comparative obstetric results, and equity of treatment. Education entries cover such subjects as adult education and the second-language programs necessary for assimilation. With entries in several languages, the bibliography includes books, journal articles, essays and chapters in books, dissertations, ERIC reports, national and international government documents, and statistical sources. With immigration a major political and social issue in most countries today, the book provides an important research tool.
