Book excerpt: Gioachino Rossini was one of the most influential, as well as one of the most industrious and emotionally complex of the great nineteenth-century composers. Between 1810 and 1829, he wrote 39 operas, a body of work, comic and serious, which transformed Italian opera and radically altered the course of opera in France. His retirement from operatic composition in 1829, at the age of 37, was widely assumed to be the act of a talented but lazy man. In reality, political events and a series of debilitating illnesses were the determining factors. After drafting the Stabat Mater in 1832, Rossini wrote no music of consequence for the best part of twenty-five years, before the clouds lifted and he began composing again in Paris in the late 1850s. During this glorious Indian summer of his career, he wrote 150 songs and solo piano pieces his 'Sins of Old Age' and his final masterpiece, the Petite Messe solennelle. The image of Rossini as a gifted but feckless amateur-the witty, high-spirited bon vivant who dashed off The Barber of Seville in a mere thirteen days-persisted down the years, until the centenary of his death in 1968 inaugurated a process of re-evaluation by scholars, performers, and writers. The original 1985 edition of Richard Osborne's pioneering and widely acclaimed Rossini redefined the life and provided detailed analyses of the complete Rossini oeuvre. Twenty years on, all Rossini's operas have been staged and recorded, a Critical Edition of his works is well advanced, and a scholarly edition of his correspondence, including 250 previously unknown letters from Rossini to his parents, is in progress. Drawing on these past two decades of scholarship and performance, this new edition of Rossini provides the most detailed portrait we have yet had of one of the worlds best-loved and most enigmatic composers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first publication of Un avvertimento ai gelosi (1831), a one-act “salon opera” for six singers and piano by Manuel del Pópulo Vicente Rodríguez García (1775–1832). Renowned as one of the leading tenor virtuosos of his generation, García was also an esteemed teacher who shared valuable bel canto techniques with his students, including his famous children, Maria Malibran, Pauline Viardot, and Manuel Patricio García, whose historic treatises document his father’s method. A prolific composer, García’s works were applauded in Madrid, Naples, Paris, London, New York, and Mexico City. Un avvertimento ai gelosi (A Warning to Those Who Are Jealous) was designed to prepare García’s students for demanding operatic careers. Based on a comic farsa, this delightful opera displays the composer’s highly florid vocal style in brilliant arias and ensembles. The edition presents the score and libretto (with translation) and also provides detailed performance notes derived from García’s teaching method, including improvised ornamentation.

Book The Oxford Dictionary of Musical Works

Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of Musical Works written by Alison Latham and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who listens to or plays classical music often wants to put the pieces they encounter in context - to check information ranging from who wrote the piece, or the date of its first performance, to how it acquired its title, or whether it was commissioned for a specific person or occasion. General dictionaries of music only cover a limited number of musical works, and include very little detail. The new Oxford Dictionary of Musical Works provides short articles on over 1750 musical works from earliest times to the present day, providing a comprehensive but handy reference. Entries encompass a broad spectrum of genres - from opera, ballet, choral and vocal music, orchestral, chamber and instrumental pieces, to nicknamed works, collections, national anthems, hymn tunes, and traditional melodies. Each entry outlines the genre to which the piece belongs; the librettist or author of the text, including any literary source; the number of acts or movements; the scoring - includingdetails of the instrumentalists and vocalists needed to perform the piece; how it came to be commissioned; the place and date of its first performance; any subsequent arrangements or revisions; and any additional important or entertaining information.
