Download or read book Lessons of the Financial Crisis written by Benn Steil and published by Council on Foreign Relations. This book was released on 2009 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current financial and economic crisis is a classic bust of a credit boom, the boom having been fueled by policies whose combined effects were to increase the demand for debt to unsustainable levels. U.S. monetary policy, taxation policy, and home ownership promotion policy were so conducive to credit expansion that the idea, understandably popular in Washington and Brussels, that preventing future such crises can be accomplished simply by waking up regulators "asleep at the switch" is dangerously simplistic. The United States in particular, given that it effectively sets monetary and credit conditions for a significant portion of the global economy, needs to put in place policies that can better discourage, recognize, and curtail a credit boom, and ensure that systemically important financial institutions can withstand its unwinding.

Download or read book Performance of Wind Exposed Structures Results of the PERBACCO project written by Francesco Ricciardelli and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PERBACCO (a free Italian acronym for Life-cycle Performance, Innovation and Design Criteria for Structures and Infrastructures Facing Æolian and Other Natural Hazards) is a research project partly funded by the Italian Ministry for University (MIUR) in the PRIN (Progetti di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale) framework, for the years 2004-05.Within the project, a first attempt has been made to integrate different disciplines aiming at an overall optimization of the performance of a wide range of wind exposed structures and infrastructures, with consequent benefi cial impact on the society. The overall objectives were (a) to provide unifi ed concepts for "expected performance" and "risks induced by æolian and other natural hazards", to be applied to structures and infrastructures over their whole life-cycle, such to be acceptable to stakeholders in the construction process (i.e. from the owner to the end-user), (b) to provide models and methodologies for dynamic monitoring of the performance of structures and infrastructures, to be integrated in appropriately designed procedures, and (c) to collect, refi ne, fi le and disseminate the knowledge available on a European basis, concerning the performance of wind-exposed structures and facilities, in a way such to be of use to Construction Industry. This volume summarises the main results obtained during the Project, with each Section addressing a different class of problems, to which many research Units have contributed. A list of papers containing the main results of the research activities carried out within the Project is also provided in each Section.
Download or read book Risk Management and Shareholders Value in Banking written by Andrea Resti and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk Management and Shareholders' Value in Banking provides an integrated framework for risk measurement, capital management and value creation in banks covering interest rate risk; market risk; credit risk; operational risk; capital regulation; capital management; and value creation. Updated to include coverage of the most recent developments in banking regulation, including comprehensive coverage of the new Basel III regulatory framework the book is structured in six parts. Part I covers the measurement and management of the interest rate risk and liquidity risk on all assets and liabilities of a banking institution. This includes a discussion of gapping models, presented critically through numerical examples and solutions, internal transfer rates, gapping techniques, liquidity risk management. Part II presents portfolio models for market risks, including the “variance/covariance” approach, Monte Carlo / historical simulations, backtesting, alternative risk measures (e.g. expected shortfall) and volatility estimation techniques. Part III addresses credit risk measurement, first on a stand-alone basis, then at a portfolio level; it also includes chapters on scoring models, rating systems, recovery risk, counterparty risk for OTC derivatives, and practical applications of credit risk models. Part IV deals with operational risk before part V goes on to illustrate the main pieces of regulation on bank capital issued by the Basel Committee, the main focus being on Basel 2 (insofar it has not been changed by the latest regulatory wave) and Basel 3. Part VI presents the link between risk and capital in all its implications, and provides the reader with the technical models needed to allocate capital to risk-taking units, set risk-adjusted profitability targets, and optimize the amount and composition of bank capital. By bringing together the core aspects of risk management in banking - models and algorithms, regulation, process engineering and management, and strategic planning – the book provides a unique and consistent framework showing how financial risks can be understood, measured, managed and covered with capital. The book is accompanied by a website which includes a series of excel files with detailed explanations of all the numerical examples shown in the book, as well as solutions to the end of chapter exercises.

Download or read book Return Distributions in Finance written by Stephen Satchell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative methods have revolutionised the area of trading, regulation, risk management, portfolio construction, asset pricing and treasury activities, and governmental activity such as central banking. One of the original contributions in this area is the classic by Cootner entitled 'The Random Nature of Stock Market Prices'. This work investigated the statistical properties of asset prices and was one of the first works to investigate this area in a rigorous manner. Much has happened in this field in the last 35 years and 'Return Distributions in Finance' contains much new information that reflects this huge growth. The authors combined experience reflects not only the new theory but also the new practice in this fascinating area. The rise of financial engineering now allows us to change the nature of asset returns to whatever pattern we desire, albeit at a cost. Benefits and costs can only be understood if we understand the underlying processes. 'Return Distributions in Finance' allows us to gain that understanding. - Assists in understanding asset return distributions - Provides a full overview of financial risk management techniques in asset allocation - Demonstrates how to use asset return forecast applications

Download or read book Macroeconomic Imbalances Bulgaria written by European Commission. Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth review takes a broad view of the Bulgarian economy in order to identify actual or potential imbalances and the possible macroeconomic risks which they may entail. Following an economic boom in 2006-2008, the necessary adjustment is taking place. But the burden on the labour market is unnecessarily high. Moreover, more needs to be done to ensure the sustainability of the adjustment once the economy recovers to its growth trend. The main observations of this review are: Following EU accession, some notable internal and external imbalances built up in the Bulgarian economy. The labour market has been hit hard by the crisis and the reintegration of low-skilled workers has proven difficult. The main labour market challenges relate to skills mismatches in some sectors and regions. Despite a pronounced deceleration, unit labour cost (ULC) growth remains one of the fastest in the EU. The current account adjustment is largely structural and is driven by sizable export market share gains, but major vulnerabilities remain. Deleveraging of the corporate sector is on-going, but the still high level of indebtedness will lengthen the adjustment process and keep the corporate sector vulnerable to changes in market sentiment. Fiscal policy is facilitating the adjustment process. In this context, the in-depth review concludes that Bulgaria is experiencing macroeconomic imbalances, which are not excessive but need to be addressed. In particular, the level of external indebtedness as well as certain macroeconomic developments related to corporate sector deleveraging and the adjustment process through labour markets deserve attention so as to reduce the risk of adverse effects on the functioning of the economy. Possible policy responses should focus on reducing skills and regional labour market mismatches and on reviewing the minimum thresholds for social security contributions. Also, emphasis on boosting total factor productivity remains crucial given that the deleveraging of the corporate sector will probably dampen investment. As a small open catching-up economy with unfettered capital flows and a fixed exchange rate tends to be inherently volatile, macroeconomic policies and banking regulation in Bulgaria should focus on reducing the risks of repeating boom-cycles and on strengthening the risk absorption capacity of economic agents.
