Book excerpt: How can traditions be subversive? The kinship between African traditions and novels has been under debate for the better part of a century, but the conversation has stagnated because of a slowness to question the terms on which it is based: orality vs. writing, tradition vs. modernity, epic vs. novel. These rigid binaries were, in fact, invented by colonialism and cemented by postcolonial identity politics. Thanks to this entrenched paradigm, far too much ink has been poured into the so-called Great Divide between oral and writing societies, and to the long-lamented decline of the ways of old. Given advances in social science and humanities research—studies in folklore, performance, invented traditions, colonial and postcolonial ethnography, history, and pop culture—the moment is right to rewrite this calcified literary history. This book is not another story of subverted traditions, but of subversive ones. West African epics like Sunjata, Samori, and Lat-Dior offer a space from which to think about, and criticize, the issues of today, just as novels in European languages do. Through readings of documented performances and major writers like Yambo Ouologuem and Amadou Hampâté Bâ of Mali, Ahmadou Kourouma of Ivory Coast, and Aminata Sow Fall and Boubacar Boris Diop of Senegal, this book conducts an entirely new analysis of West African oral epic and its relevance to contemporary world literature.

Keeping in mind that an increasing number of scholars in Anglophone Postcolonial studies and Francophone African studies have been attempting for quite some time now to open interstices and build crossroads that can better connect them to each other, keeping in mind that these scholars work at revealing mechanisms by which any antagonistic discourses can mix, influence, act upon or react to one another, this book seeks to take a constructive step in establishing enduring grounds for multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary and transnational academic research and collaboration.

C'est en son hommage que sont publiées ici un ensemble de contributions présentées lors d'un colloque, tenu à Louvain-la-Neuve, en mars 2005, et qui ont été abondamment retravaillées. Grâce à ces intermédiaires, les cités renforcent leur statut de lieux de pouvoir. Mais, autres médiateurs, des gens de lettres dénoncent, à travers des romans et des poèmes, les dangers de la ville et la précarité des citadins les plus démunis. En effet, malgré des moments sous le signe de l'interculturalité ou du partage, ainsi lors de fêtes, les sociétés urbaines, traversées de multiples clivages, connaissent des tensions. En témoignent des conflits autour du contrôle des informations et de l'occupation des lieux de culte ou la concurrence entre les défenseurs des croyances du terroir et les prédicateurs des nouvelles Eglises. Mais les nouveautés sont aussi utilisées dans les stratégies personnelles comme ressources pour renégocier sa place au sein de la communauté et faire son chemin dans la complexité des mondes urbains.
