We have long been considered unique as upright, bipedal creatures endowed with language, the ability to use tools, to think and introspect. We now know that other creatures may be more or less capable of similar behaviour, and that these human capacities in many cases have long evolutionary trajectories. Our information about such matters comes from a diverse variety of disciplines, including experimental and neuropsychology, primatology, ethology, archaeology, palaeontology, comparative linguistics and molecular biology. It is the interdisciplinary nature of the newly-emerging information which bears upon one of the profoundest scientific human questions - our origin and place in the animal kingdom, whether unique or otherwise - which makes the general topic so fascinating to layperson, student, and expert alike. The book attempts to integrate across a wide range of disciplines an evolutionary view of human psychology, with particular reference to language, praxis and aesthetics. A chapter on evolution, from the appearance of life to the earliest mammals, is followed by one which examines the appearance of primates, hominids and the advent of bipedalism. There follows a more detailed account of the various species of Homo, the morphology and origin of modern H. sapiens sapiens as seen from the archaeological/palaeontological and molecular-biological perspectives. The origins of art and an aesthetic sense in the Acheulian and Mousterian through to the Upper Palaeolithic are seen in the context of the psychology of art. Two chapters on language address its nature and realization centrally and peripherally, the prehistory and neuropsychology of speech, and evidence for speech and/or language in our hominid ancestors. A chapter on tool use and praxis examines such behaviour in other species, primate and non-primate, the neurology of praxis and its possible relation to language. Encephalization and the growth of the brain, phylogenetically and ontogenetically, and its relationship to intellectual capacity leads on finally to a consideration of intelligence, social intelligence, consciousness and self awareness. A final chapter reviews the issues covered. The book, of around 70.000 words of text, includes over 500 references over half of which date from 1994 or later.

Book excerpt: Interessante opera evoluzionistica stilata da colui che fu il traduttore italiano di Darwin. Ma Canestrini non fu solo il divulgatore della teoria dell'evoluzione in Italia. Su alcuni argomenti specifici le sue ricerche diedero un contributo originale al dibattito evoluzionistico. Nell'Origine delle specie del 1859, Darwin aveva affrontato solo di sfuggita le conseguenze della sua teoria sulla nostra specie - chiudendo con una frase sibillina: "luce sarà fatta sull'origine dell'uomo e sulla sua storia". Il naturalista inglese in effetti aspettò qualche anno per tornare pubblicamente sull'argomento, ma intanto altri zoologi e antropologi presero la parola, da Thomas Henry Huxley a Ernst Haeckel. Tra questi, vi fu anche Canestrini, che in anticipo su Darwin raccolse tra il 1866 e il 1867 una serie di "prove" provenienti dall'anatomia comparata, dall'embriologia e dall'antropologia a sostegno di una lettura in chiave evoluzionistica dell'origine e della storia del genere umano. Lo zoologo italiano si concentrava su alcuni organi anomali e rudimentali dell'uomo. La deformazione dell'osso malare del cranio in alcuni individui umani, per esempio, era un indizio della discendenza da un antico antenato in comune con altri animali, per cui quella che allora poteva sembrare un'anomalia, in un antico progenitore era stata la regola, che continuava a manifestarsi in un determinato stadio dello sviluppo dei feti umani e come un tratto comune in altri mammiferi. Caratteri ormai privi della loro funzione nell'uomo, come la plica semilunare dell'occhio, i muscoli auricolari dell'orecchio, il coccige nel tratto terminale della colonna vertebrale erano vestigia, residui di una storia ereditaria che si perdeva negli abissi del tempo. Il naturalista non doveva far altro che interpretare questi indizi e ricomporre la trama della natura. Per la loro efficacia, gli esempi elencati da Canestrini furono ripresi a piene mani da Darwin e inseriti nel suo lungo ragionamento sull'evoluzione umana. Prima di trasferirsi a Padova, Canestrini, che era nato nel 1835 a Revò, un paesino della Val di Non, in Trentino, aveva mosso i primi passi della sua carriera scientifica all'università di Modena, dove aveva insegnato scienze naturali fino al 1868. Qui, accanto agli studi di zoologia sistematica, iniziò a interessarsi di antropologia e paletnologia, lavorando in particolare sulla fauna e la flora della media età del bronzo delle civiltà delle terramare e delle palafitte del modenese, di cui si andavano scoprendo numerose testimonianze proprio in quegli anni. La passione per l'antropologia lo seguì anche a Padova, dove sul finire degli anni Settanta diede vita a un insegnamento dedicato a questa disciplina intesa come storia naturale del genere umano, iniziando un gabinetto con strumenti e raccolte craniologiche, primo nucleo dell'attuale museo di Antropologia dell'università di Padova. E fu proprio nell'ambito di questi interessi che nel 1873 fu incaricato di condurre uno studio antropologico sui resti del sommo poeta Petrarca conservati ad Arquà Petrarca. In linea con l'antropologia fisica del tempo, si trattava principalmente di misurare ossa, capacità cranica e angolo facciale, nella speranza di decifrare il segreto dell'eccezionale intelligenza dei grandi nomi del passato, da Dante ad Alessandro Volta. A Padova Canestrini creò intorno a sé un cenacolo di allievi e collaboratori, richiamando tra l'altro un nutrito gruppo di giovani trentini, da Lamberto Moschen per l'antropologia a Giacinto Fedrizzi per la zoologia. In questa strategia rientrò nel 1872 la fondazione della Società veneto-trentina di scienze naturali, il cui programma era incentivare i legami tra gli studiosi delle due regioni, un'attività chiaramente mal vista dalle autorità austroungariche. L'annessione del Veneto al Regno d'Italia era del resto cosa recente. Come molti scienziati di metà Ottocento, Canestrini si occupò anche di politica. Presidente per un periodo dell'Associazione costituionale progressista di Padova, nel luglio 1881 venne eletto nel Consiglio comunale della città veneta in una lista concordata insieme da progressisti e moderati, intervenendo su istruzione pubblica, università e provvedimenti medico-sanitari. Per la sua adesione alla teoria dell'evoluzione, il suo laicismo e le sue posizioni irredentiste, Canestrini continuò a far discutere l'opinione pubblica anche da morto. A soli due anni dalla sua scomparsa, Trento volle omaggiare il naturalista con un busto in marmo in piazza Dante, effettivamente inaugurato tra violente polemiche il 14 settembre 1902. Danneggiato, venne poi sostituito con un esemplare in bronzo. Al dibattito presero parte su fronti opposti anche figure politiche di primo piano come l'irredentista Cesare Battisti e un giovane Alcide De Gasperi, che in maniera provocatoria proponeva di sostituire la dedica sotto il busto con la frase "A Giovanni Canestrini. Studiò e faticò molto ma sbagliò strada. Riposa in pace". Eppure Canestrini non aveva sbagliato strada: in dialogo con Darwin egli aveva contribuito a ricostruire la storia che univa l'uomo al resto della natura. Grazie a lui, alla fine dell'Ottocento Padova fu una delle culle del darwinismo in Italia. (Fonti: varie, G. M.).
