Book excerpt: "French architect Auguste Perret (1874-1954) was a pioneering precursor to the Modern Movement. His career is inextricably linked to the constructional technique of reinforced concrete: in works such as his 1903 apartment building in rue Franklin, Paris, concrete a material that previously had been perceived as common and industrial was reinvented, handled artistically and given its own idiom. Le Corbusier described this building as 'a foretaste of the modern world'." "With his projects in France and abroad, such as the MusZ e des Travaux Publics in Paris, the Church of Notre-Dame at Raincy and many other domestic, industrial and urban projects, Perret caught the attention of a generation searching for a new architecture appropriate to the twentieth century. A committed constructor and innovator, Perret simultaneously adhered to structural classicist principles, continuously resisting the more transitory aspects of the avant-garde." "This monograph is the first sustained study of Perret in English, richly illustrated with new colour photography as well as drawings and photographs from the Perret archive. It also includes an appendix of Perret's aphorisms and other writings, which provide an insight into his craft and its artistic social principles."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Public Enterprise Revisited

Download or read book Public Enterprise Revisited written by Chrisafis H. Iordanoglou and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book compares the 1954-79 labour productivity record of five expanding public sector industries to that of 24 expanding, capital intensive, mass-production industries in the British private sector. The author shows that the public sector industries' labour productivity growth was significantly faster than that of the private sector industries. Strikingly, he also finds that the state-owned industries were narrowing their productivity gap with their US counterparts at a significantly faster rate than the private sector industries. Dr. Iordanoglou concludes that it is possible that public ownership had - in the historical period investigated - a long-term positive effect on these industries."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Reappraising State Owned Enterprise

Download or read book Reappraising State Owned Enterprise written by Franco Amatori and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a quarter century of almost general condemnation and rebuttal of the entire nationalization experience, it appears that there are second thoughts about governmental direct intervention in the economy. Reappraising State-Owned Enterprise deals with a topic often undervalued in the past decade but which now, with the crisis of 2008-2009, calls for greater attention: the direct intervention of the State as Entrepreneur. The collection of essays in this volume – prepared by some of the leading authorities in the field – offers a contribution to this debate by providing a balanced assessment of two of the most relevant experiences of mixed economies, the United Kingdom and Italy. In this respect, a comparison between these two countries is very much appropriate since in both nations the State played an important role as "Entrepreneur" starting in the early 20th century. In Great Britain and Italy, the heyday of the "State as Entrepreneur" was in the years right after WWII when it was used as a tool for promoting a modern society in which citizens acquired a stronger sense of belonging to their nations. The UK and Italy saw the State take on a too-pervasive role in the 70s; the two nations responded in different ways. In the 1980s Great Britain embarked on a harsh process of privatizations while Italians struggled on until finally submitting to privatizations in their nation in the following decade. The deep crisis of the final years of the 21st century forced both nations to reconsider State interventions as an appropriate tool in order to protect the wellbeing of the national economy.

Book Advances in Enterprise Engineering V

Download or read book Advances in Enterprise Engineering V written by Antonia Albani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of the first Enterprise Engineering Working Conference (EEWC), held in Antwerp, Belgium, May 16-17, 2011. EEWC aims at addressing the challenges that modern and complex enterprises are facing in a rapidly changing world. The participants of the working conference share the belief that dealing with these challenges requires rigorous and scientific solutions, focusing on the design and engineering of enterprises. The goal of EEWC is to stimulate interaction between the different stakeholders, scientists as well as practitioners, interested in making Enterprise Engineering a reality. The 8 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. EEWC 2011 had 24 submissions of which 8 were accepted for publication. The topics of the papers encouraged active participation in interesting discussions and the exchange of ideas, and stimulated future cooperation among the participants. This made EEWC a real ‘working conference’ contributing to the further development of Enterprise Engineering as a mature discipline. The topics covered include designing organizations with DEMO, combining DEMO with other methods, and studies in enterprise architecture.

Book excerpt: A powerful and impassioned historical account of the largest successful revolt by enslaved people in history: the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1803 “One of the seminal texts about the history of slavery and abolition.... Provocative and empowering.” —The New York Times Book Review The Black Jacobins, by Trinidadian historian C. L. R. James, was the first major analysis of the uprising that began in the wake of the storming of the Bastille in France and became the model for liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of plantation owners toward enslaved people was horrifyingly severe. And it is the story of a charismatic and barely literate enslaved person named Toussaint L’Ouverture, who successfully led the Black people of San Domingo against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces—and in the process helped form the first independent post-colonial nation in the Caribbean. With a new introduction (2023) by Professor David Scott.
